here is a look at my team (price + popularity in brackets)

#katusha   ZAKARIN Ilnur   (867 / 16)

still hard to say what Ilnur is capable of but with the Giro and Vuelta on the schedule in 2017, a double GT podium isn't completely out of reach I guess.

#astana   ARU Fabio   (777 / 91)

same

#sky   KWIATKOWSKI Michal   (611 / 61)

I am just hopinge for some focus on something here... preferably mid mountain one week races with a short time trial

#trek   DEGENKOLB John   (550 / 115)

a no brainer, 1000+ points a re a given under normal circumstances

#sky   LANDA MEANA Mikel   (479 / 81)

meh

#marseille   FINETTO Mauro   (378 / 5)

Finetto is probably my most risky pick. It's pretty much impossible to say how he will acclimatize in this completely new circumstances - but if he does, there should be lots and lots of one day and short stage races in France that suit him to the bone.

#jumbo   GESINK Robert   (369 / 22)

:gesink, nuff said

#katusha   SPILAK Simon   (301 / 49)

let it rain

#bahrain   NAVARDAUSKAS Ramunas   (282 / 23)

no idea what was the problem with Ramunas in 2017, but he has scored >500 points 3/6 times so far since he entered the WT, so he should do alright

#bahrain   MOSER Moreno   (281 / 10)

Moser showed some glimpses of old shape this year I think, hope he can do another step up again

#sky   VIVIANI Elia   (275 / 102)

obvious, nothing to say

#bora   KÖNIG Leopold   (264 / 80)

obvious, nothing to say

#cannondale   PHINNEY Taylor   (232 / 22)

seemed to be returning to shape late in the year after his long injury.

#bmc   KÜNG Stefan   (225 / 47)

obvious, nothing to say

#jumbo   BOOM Lars   (212 / 46)

back home in the Netherlands, Lars still has a lot of potential if he can find the motivation I think

#europcar   HIVERT Jonathan   (173 / 7)

I don't really know what was up with Hivert last year, bit he was strong in the late season classics, and with Europcar he could rock the sh*t races again

#androni   BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   (159 / 45)

Egan is a nice dude with a lot of potential, so he was an early selection, although I doubt he will score much more than 200-300 points

#aquablue   NORDHAUG Lars Petter   (154 / 21)

so was LPN. Question is, if he will do any races suited for him though...

#bmc   TEUNS Dylan   (150 / 25)

with Gilbert gone, Dylan will take his role of course

#katusha   MACHADO Tiago Jose Pinto   (140 / 22)

late inclusion as there weren't enough points left for Boaro

#astana   BRESCHEL Matti   (116 / 27)

see above

#movistar   BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto   (108 / 24)

Bananito, again... :fp. With half of the good riders gone at Movistar, he should have more freedom though. Let's hope some early results will result in the urge to keep going

#sky   INTXAUSTI ELORRIAGA Beñat   (79 / 86)

obvious, nothing to say

#ccc   PONZI Simone   (78 / 42)

it can hardly get worse

#orica   POWER Robert   (77 / 80)

obvious, nothing to say

#lotto   BOECKMANS Kris   (60 / 44)

can't afford to miss another 400+ season. Could be ~100 as well though...

#bora   PELUCCHI Matteo   (45 / 53)

meh

#verandas   DEVOLDER Stijn   (30 / 22)

only 22 guys picked the winner of this year's Ronde?!  :cool

#fantini   ARREDONDO MORENO Julian David   (17 / 71)

it can hardly get worse... not a must pick though, I fear

#minsk   VORGANOV Eduard   (6 / 10)

BAZHKOU and PAPOK scored >200 points each for Minsk last year. No reason for Vorganov not to do the same

#movistar   MALORI Adriano   (2 / 92)

obvious, nothing to say

#tavira   SILVESTRE Fabio Andre Tomas   (1 / 4)

there are not too many points to win in Portugal unfortunately, but Fabio should be a able to take a sprint victory and there I think

#bolivia   GARCIA ETXEGIBEL Egoitz   (0 / 3)

no idea if it was a wise decision to pick Egoitz from the long list of potentially good 0 pointers, but it was one which came from the heart :). And Bolivia should be around for some flat 1.1 sh*t races in Spain like the Vuelta a La Rioja and so on, where he potentially could end up high the order

Wasn't he crashing more than Geraint last year? He always seemed to be in the moves, but unless my memory is exaggerating things, he missed out on a lot more points that he could have got. That's why he was gimme for one of my few serious selections - I was sure he was going to be my most popular pick.

I remember him crashing on the final descent in that early season one day race which was won by Firsanov, yeah. Maybe he did on another occasion, no idea.

He looks talented. Whether he's the next Chaves or Nairoman is still up for debate. He looked good at l'avenir.

Did I read correctly that he got in touch with Lars Michaelson and that's how he was invited to the Dec training camp with Astana???  and from there he got the gig
I guess so. Lars M has basically assembled his own little Scandinavian #astana mini-team (Valgren, Breschel, Korsæth, plus Fuglsang and Hansen) who will probably ride much the same calendar.

    Update: there is no update!

CQ hasn't put out a post-Aussie nats update, although they usually do, so I'm going to hold out hope that one is coming.

In the meantime, I've cleaned up the spreadsheet, got it up to the official 131 participants on the front page (Gotland was the other team that had its own tab but I forgot to include on the front page), and erased all the non-participant pages. Take a look through the file here.

I also updated the final official popularity standings, for riders and teams - had to change two teams that were entered in error and add one more team I messed up on and missed. Here's the final list of team popularity:

    Hey all,

it seems like CQ quietly added a post-Aussie nats update a few days ago to their downloads section without advertising it on the main page! That's exciting - I'm currently tied up for today (North America time), but will get out the first update tomorrow.

To respond to the earlier comments: JSG, I dunno what's up with Cink, I had to delete and then write his name again, nothing was wrong with it before but it just wouldn't read. And I fixed the team popularity tab to put the attacking vikings in their rightful place as least popular team (I had copied their spreadsheet line from the alphabetically proximal the_asian and forgot to change the name in the formula).

If anyone notices any other small things like that, let me know! Those will be fixed for the first update.

Update #1: Archieboy takes the early lead with the right combo at the Aussie/NZ nats

Well hello! We are back in the 7th edition of the CQ game; the start of the season is always full of promise and possibility, and the first update, although certainly not an indicator of the final result, is a prestigious one to grab.

This year, there weren't really many high placings at the Aussie nats by popular riders. Miles Scotson, the Aussie champ, was picked by 8 teams, and he was the most popular rider in the top 5 of either Aussie or NZ championships (RR or TT). As such, the team on top of the list (for the week, and of course overall as well) is among the least 'popular' teams in aggregate.

Congratulations to Archieboy! With some rare picks scoring this week (Scotson with 117 points, and unique picks Cameron Bayly with 40,  Lachlan Norris with 23, and Sean Lake with 11), their team ekes out a victory for the week and a first place overall! Archieboy's 191 points was closely contested by game veteran Blues in the Bottle, who came in hot with Scotson, Dennis (50 points) and Hepburn (20 points) for a total of 187. Tigerion grabs third with a team including Scotson, Hepburn, and unique pick (and recently un-retired) Cam Meyer with 8 points!

    Top 10 Overall

    Rank   Team   Points
    1   archieboy   191
2   Blues in the bottle   187
    3   Tigerion   145
    4   torcia_86   127
    5   tom_jelte   125
    6   ansimi   117
    6   Bicycle_Boy   117
    6   Mellow Velo   117
    9   sublimit   110
    10   sodak_za   87

37 of 131 teams scored at least a point this week (literally - 37th place al pacino scored 1 point). There is no high movers obviously, as all teams started out tied for first so really everyone just moved down. I will award points for the Green Jersey competition for the week, but just realized I hadn't updated that tab with current teams so I'll fix that up this week. Other than that, the TDU starts this week so the real WorldTour points are going to heat up the competition after dipping our toes in this week.

    Happy to be back!

Question for everyone now that we're starting up - is there anyone who is interested in seeing the Polka Dot Jersey competition continue from last year? It was noted in the windup discussion in last year's thread that a few people didn't see it adding much to the updates, and at least one person noted that they thought it took away from the Green Jersey competition. From a pure numbers standpoint, 10 of the top 20 finishers in each competition were the same, which is some variation, but considerable overlap as well. I had created the competition because the year prior, it was expressed that the Green Jersey competition had too much overlap with the top 10 overall teams. The idea was that it would be cool to reward teams who don't necessarily stand a chance in the overall, but have unique riders or groups of riders who would give their teams great weeks and bad weeks, moving up and down the table. Last year, it ended up the same team won both competitions (who wasn't in the top 10 overall teams).

I like this competition, and I don't mind compiling it at all, but obviously I'm not interested in doing it if no one wants it. Unless a few people speak up for it, I'll take it out of the spreadsheet, for sure. Just thought I'd ask one final time.

I like the Green and KOM jersey adds something to those that don´t go for the Obvious team and try have a different approach, this has failed GC wise but then instead of having nothing you still can have those great weeks and races which means you get some recognition.

We have a GC , Youth game why not have Points and KOM as well

I don't pay attention to either of the other jerseys tbh. Getting mentioned in an update/winning a week outranks both I think.

First out of the blocks: Breschel, Eiking, Manzin, Guerreiro
Zero points yet, but at least Breschel made the start line and has stayed on his bike  :cheer

    TDU

just DOULL and GUERREIRO for me but I've also got Chris Hamilton and James Shaw in my youth team.

Few spots up for grabs for the Emerging team as well, interested to see how O'Connor and the younger Scotson / Hamilton does.

Mixed fortune... loosing Doull but keeping Guerreiro was the best choice = he has been exceptional
