Why the :S?
It's their absolute season highlight.
They probably trained specifically for this TTT, may even have done a training camp where they practiced on the exact same roads.

Elkov did strengthen over the winter (and had a couple of riders busted) and Bora were carrying a rider or two, but come on, it's still a bit of a surprise that a CT team beats a WT one in a TTT.

Three Baltic countries – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – demonstrated their solidarity in their quest for independence by forming a human chain on August 23, 1989. Approximately 2 million people joined their hands that day. The extraordinary event drew global attention and finally led to the Baltic States regaining their independence. The human chain spanning over 600 kilometers was registered in The Guinness Book of Records.

The joint Baltic cycling tour has a long history. The tradition began in the 1955 and was broken in 1987. On November 4, 2010 in Riga, the presidents of three national cycling unions signed a cooperation agreement to restore the tradition of the Baltic cycling tour.

From August 2011, Baltic Chain Tour marks the anniversary of the Baltic Chain. It is also one of the longest annual cycling tours in the Northern Europe.

The race started in rainy weather with only ten degrees celsius and there was quite a lot of wind. Later on the rain stopped and the temperature rose, but the rough morning weather suited the team tactics of Rietumu Banka – Riga.

We knew that the race was going to be very windy, and decided to tear the group apart. This happened after 33 kilometers of riding, and I was in the front the whole day, Bogdanovics reports.

My team did a great job controlling the race. I had great legs for the sprint, and two of my team mates gave me a lead out. Tomorrow it will probably be a similar wind, but the finish will be harder because it is on a hill. If I have good legs I think I can still win.

Vangstad, Joeaar and Lowndes all missed the front group.

There could be live coverage tomorrow here, but their Facebook looks good for updates too.

    http://balticchaintour.com/2017/08/25/press-release-benjamin-perry-strongest-on-the-last-hill-of-the-second-stage-of-baltic-chain-tour/

    Quote
Perry broke away from the peloton 34 kilometres before the finish with five other riders.

During the last kilometres the peloton picked up more speed and the breakaway group got smaller and smaller. In the last kilometres there was a steep downhill followed by a narrow bridge right before the final uphill (900m at 9%). Meanwhile the peloton was already right behind what was left of the break away.

"In the hill I didn’t attack, but maintained a strong pace, but nobody followed" Perry says. He claims the race was tactically tough for his team. The rain and 6 kilometre gravel road also caused some stress.

"Other teams were looking at us and attacking. I got a flat tyre on the gravel, but was able to ride through it with a little pressure left. Later I was able to get in the right break, and in the group we worked well together."

Finally a result for Perry. He's almost regressed this year, so this is a big fillip. However it will be very difficult to challenge Boggy for the overall.

Nice to see Hanninen up there today. Yesterday's result (24m+ down) had me wondering if he was much cop at all.

    Quote
After an evenful and windy day with several showers the victory was decided in a mass sprint by the Pirita velodrome in Tallinn. The Norwegian Herman Dahl from Team Sparebanken Sør was first. "I got a perfect lead out from my team mates for the sprint. There were three guys helping me there, and we were the best team" Dahl says.

"It was a long day. We tried to speed up in the crosswind, but it didn’t last long enough to work. At the end part of the race my team and the Israel Cycling Academy were taking action, when Rietumu Banka – Riga with the yellow jersey wasn’t riding in a sensible way."

Break consists of Vosekalns, Kanepejs, Kanerva and Joeaar.

~80km to go with a gap of just over 5 minutes.

Vosekalns (Rietumu Banka - Riga) is only twenty seconds down in the GC and has picked up some bonifications already, so Sparebanken and Bike Geeeeeeks are working in the peloton to bring it back.

Rietumu Banka - Riga played it correctly by putting Vosekalns in the break, but at the end of the stage that extra energy the rest of the team had conserved still wasn't enough to deliver Boggy to the result he needed to reclaim the top spot in the GC. He was banging his handlebars in frustration.

To misquote search slightly, what kind of race comes up with a parcours consisting of a TT and seven sprint stages?!

The last two stages were at least a little bit selective. If they had been the sprint stages and not the GC days then we might have been cooking with gas, but they weren't. I just don't know what the thinking was ....... and with every stage broadcast in full. Bring back the 2012 and 2014 style courses please.

True, but don't forget most of the race is at ~1500 m or higher. Granted, it's not the same as 2000+ metres, but it could have some influence.

I expect the Iranian teams, especially #shahrdary & #pishgaman, to be in stellar form compared to (most of) the foreigners.
We'll see what kind of competition this turns out to be. :shh

Interesting. Nobody from Pishgaman or Tabriz made the front group, in fact only one Iranian did.

Any 0711 reports on what happened in the stage Fus?

    So that winning team: Baby-Dump.

Does 'dump' have a meaning in Dutch, or is it just an incredibly inappropriate choice of English word?

(I'm assuming the business is sale of equipment for babies, not means of disposing of them: if the latter is the case, then I guess the name is appropriate after all)
