12TH OMLOOP HET NIEUWSBLAD WOMEN’S ELITEThe organization of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad for Women’s Elite has announced which teams will be part of the 12th edition of Omloop. 28 lucky teams were chosen out of many candidatures to participate on Saturday February 25th on the site of ‘Flemish Cycling Centre Eddy Merckx’ in Ghent. The number of teams with a UCI statute in 2017 has expanded to 24, all participating in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and joined by four Belgian club teams.“There was much to do about safety in the peloton”, says Geert Stevens of the organization. “That is why we wanted to pull our weight and limit the number of teams to 28, whereas last year we had 33 participating teams. Of course we can’t neglect the UCI WorldTour teams and since we have always wanted to give Belgian teams the chance to measure up to the other teams in races of this level, the choice to fill up the remaining spots with those promising Belgian teams was obvious.”
The question all cycling fans will be looking the answer to on February 25th is who will become the successor of Elizabeth Deignan, who drove to the finish solo in the rainbow jersey last year. “This will happen on a barely changed route”, says coordinator Joerie Devreese. “The cobbles of the Mariaborrestraat in Etikhove are the only novelty. The nine climbs in the race, from which the Molenberg is the last one, remain. The last 35km will be exactly the same as the route of Elite Men.”

Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.
