After his two wins at the Mallorca Challenge, Tim Wellens wants to win the Strade Bianche
AND ... to race Milan Sanremo !!!
On the Lotto thread I just posted an old article of Het Nieuwsblad (from 22 October) in which he let us know about his ambition for the Strade. You see that he's got pretty fixed ideas.
From Today's Laatste Nieuws
The aim was to win one race of the Mallorca Challenge but Tim Wellens won two of them. It's still early in 2017 and then you should not want too much. will.
Last Saturday at the Andratx Trophy, Tim Wellens took Valverde off of his wheel. Which rider does not want this? A win that came like an accident for Tim wished to offer it to his teammates Tiesj Benoot and [best friend] Louis Vervaeke as he was happy with his win the day before at the Transmuntana Trophy.
So it unfolded:
On the final climb, the Mirador des Colomer, I wanted to attack very hard from the foot of the climb. That way, Valverde and Majka had to do everything they could to catch me. Tiesj and Louis could capitalise on that. Normally I couldn't possibly win. My attack was far too early and with head wind. Beating Valverde & Majka makes the win quite nice.
Wellens raced according to plan and was surprised Valverde and Majka couldn't bridge the gap.
The win being nice is an understatement. Wellens is in form. Even if we are in January. And yet being in early shape is exactly what Wellens didn't want.
Last year I badly handled my season. I never took rest. I wanted a different approach this year. But well I had a problem-free winter. I wasn't sick and I trained the way I wanted to. An early shape after all isn't a problem.
[sure it isn't a problem, early wins are already wins you cannot be taken away from, always got to pick!]
Besides, wins bring a good sphere in the team. Greipel won last Thursday and then Wellens, twice: "That motivates everybody"
Then Wellens rides the Tour of Andalucia. He has lived two years in Malaga and knows the roads there [again he shared a flat with his good friends Louis Vervaeke, Sean De Bie & Jasper Stuyven
Then he goes to Italy for the Strade Bianche , Tirreno Adriatico & Milan Sanremo. All new for Wellens.
He's looking forward to Milan-Sanremo. In Tirreno he'll try to win a stage but the most important race for him is the Strade Bianche. Wellens does not hide his ambition:
The Strade are my first aim. I like the hilly route and the gravel roads. I raced there with the U23. I want to win there.
