Challenge Ciclista Mallorca
« on: January 11, 2017, 10:57 »
The Challenge Ciclista Mallorca is a series of back to back one day races held on the Spanish island each year since 1992. Same as in past years, it will mark the start of the European cycling season and consist of four races ranked as 1.1 on the UCI Europe Tour. The event has been cut from five to four races in 2012, and although several riders are still taking part in all of them, no matter the different character of the races, the formerly awarded overall classification has been scrapped in 2009.

so after a one year break we are back on the "mountain" top finish for one of the Trofeos :)

    (finish at km 3.4)

Still no team for Sanz. Two twelfths were his best results in 2016, so that may have something to do with it. Portugal or the Middle East as final options?

When even his father-in-law (? or whatever Unzué is to him) won't give him a new contract, it's looking bleak.

But yeah, maybe Rebellin needs another domestique. :P

the profile of the 2nd Trofeo had to be altered due to snow on the climbs. It shouldn't make much of a difference though as it only seem to infect the early phase of the race

Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

NICE make their race debut. MacAnally would normally be their guy for the sprint, but he literally only arrived this morning in Mallorca after flight delays, so don't expect much.

    As expected.

Not sure what Greipel really gets out of these early season wins. Money, I guess, but would he be better off starting a couple of weeks later?

    I don't think so.
He'll have to train anyway at this time of the year; why not do the training in a race, dust off the sprint legs, adjust the sprint train, and pick up a couple of wins?

After his two wins at the Mallorca Challenge, Tim Wellens wants to win the Strade Bianche AND ... to race Milan Sanremo !!!  :o :cool

On the Lotto thread I just posted an old article of Het Nieuwsblad (from 22 October) in which he let us know about his ambition for the Strade. You see that he's got pretty fixed ideas.  ;)

    From Today's Laatste Nieuws

The aim was to win one race of the Mallorca Challenge but Tim Wellens won two of them. It's still early in 2017 and then you should not want too much. will.

Last Saturday at the Andratx Trophy, Tim Wellens took Valverde off of his wheel. Which rider does not want this? A win that came like an accident for Tim wished to offer it to his teammates Tiesj Benoot and [best friend] Louis Vervaeke as he was happy with his win the day before at the Transmuntana Trophy.

    So it unfolded:
    Quote
On the final climb, the Mirador des Colomer, I wanted to attack very hard from the foot of the climb. That way, Valverde and Majka had to do everything they could to catch me. Tiesj and Louis could capitalise on that. Normally I couldn't possibly win. My attack was far too early and with head wind. Beating Valverde & Majka makes the win quite nice.

Wellens raced according to plan and was surprised Valverde and Majka couldn't bridge the gap.

The win being nice is an understatement. Wellens is in form. Even if we are in January. And yet being in early shape is exactly what Wellens didn't want.

    Quote
Last year I badly handled my season. I never took rest. I wanted a different approach this year. But well I had a problem-free winter. I wasn't sick and I trained the way I wanted to. An early shape after all isn't a problem.

[sure it isn't a problem, early wins are already wins you cannot be taken away from, always got to pick!]

Besides, wins bring a good sphere in the team. Greipel won last Thursday and then Wellens, twice: "That motivates everybody"

Then Wellens rides the Tour of Andalucia. He has lived two years in Malaga and knows the roads there [again he shared a flat with his good friends Louis Vervaeke, Sean De Bie & Jasper Stuyven  ;)]

Then he goes to Italy for the Strade Bianche , Tirreno Adriatico & Milan Sanremo. All new for Wellens.

He's looking forward to Milan-Sanremo. In Tirreno he'll try to win a stage but the most important race for him is the Strade Bianche.  Wellens does not hide his ambition:

    Quote
The Strade are my first aim. I like the hilly route and the gravel roads. I raced there with the U23. I want to win there.
