43rd Volta ao Algarve
« on: February 14, 2017, 09:59 »

Southern Portugal once again welcomes the world's top cyclists for a week of winter sun and five stages of racing around the Algarve region. This year is the 43rd edition, and the first to receive a 2.HC ranking. Which means, again for the first time, 12 World Tour teams and live TV coverage across the world on Eurosport.

The Teams
As well as the 12 WT guests, 6 pro-continental teams take part. The peloton is completed by the 6 Portuguese domestic (Continental) teams, and Rally Cycling, who have opened their season in Portugal for the last few years with some success.

The Route
In previous years, the Volta ao Algarve was very ITT-centric. And while an 18km stage against the clock still holds its place in the middle of the course, more recently, they have introduced two mountain-top finishes to shake up the pack a little. It's the same two climbs this year as last - the end of the final stage up to the Alto do Malhão, with the 9km, 5.8% climb to Alto da Fóia on Stage 2. Consistency will be key - as Geraint Thomas proved last year, taking the overall victory despite not winning a stage, he finished second to Lulu Sanchez at Fóia and 3rd in the ITT.

Stage 1 - Albufeira-Lagos – 182,9 km

Stage 2 - Lagoa-Alto da Fóia - 189,3 km

Stage 3 - Sagres ITT - 18km

Stage 4 - Almodôvar-Tavira – 203,4 km

Stage 5 - Loulé-Alto do Malhão – 179,2 km

The Favourites
None of last year's top 4 return to defend their title or avenge their defeat. But while Geraint Thomas may be elsewhere, there will be plenty in the peloton who have experienced victories in Algarve. It's always hard to pick winners this early in the season, but if he's on form and supported by his team, Michal Kwiatkowski would be a good bet to retain the title he last won in 2014. Movistar arrive without their recognised GC contenders, but with Dowsett, Castroviejo and Oliveira lining up, they will be aiming for the TT stage if nothing else - although Tony Martin will be out to spoil the party. Greipel, Cavendish, Gaviria and Degenkolb are among those targetting the flat finishes.

12km in, and the five-man break already has nearly a 7 minute lead.

Meanwhile, if Nocentini wins today, he will finally go one better than his second place on the 1999 finish in Fóia (his debut season as a pro).

Can I just point out that I gave Dan Martin a :* :* :* stage winner prediction. This comes after one of my other :* :* :* predictions, Andre Greipel, finished 2nd yesterday.

If anyone needs me, I'll be in the shower because I'M ON FIRE!

Also, Nocentini only 33 seconds (and 18 years) away from finally wining in Fóia.

A fun stage. A great performance from Roglic. Quickstep played it right, trying to make a climb that's too easy for Martin as hard as they could, but it's just not possible for a flyweight to put big time into the big lump power climbers on a climb like that. It's very funny watching a Roubaix guy like Stybar rip a peloton to shreds on a mountain though.

CJ, what happened to the Sporting team? You had Joni Brendão as a possible stage winner here but I can't find any of them in the results?

Well, the team certainly exists. Must be a bug on PCS' end.

    Ah yes.

I never got this (mainly) Portuguese obsession with using / instead of - in team names, anyway. Maybe CJ can explain.

Regarding Brandão, he's clearly not warmed up for the season yet. Given his abilities as a climber, this is clearly the only reason 96-year old Rinaldo Nocentini was so far ahead of him yesterday.

Regarding the team names... I had never noticed that. W52/FC Porto, Sporting/Tavira and LA Aluminios/Metalusa Blackjack are all registered that way with the UCI. In contrast, RP-Boavista and Louletano-Hospital de Loulé have the more regular hyphen.

Interestingly, if you look at the Portuguese federation's list of teams, which includes all non-PT teams that have PT riders, teams like Caja Rural/Seguros RGA and Trek/Segafredo are listed with a slash, while Team Katusha-Alpecin is with a hyphen.

I can offer no explanation, and I suggest we just enjoy an ITT along the windswept Atlantic coast, reaching what is, if I'm not mistaken, the western-most point of the European continent.

The Americans also use slash to some extent, as in superteamname p/b anothercorporation e.g. Optum p/b Kelly benefit strategies.
