Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

Should have done nothing, it wasn't anything bad. But they acknowledged it was an offence by giving the ridiculous penalties. So they had nowhere to go.

Correct decision. The article by Caley Fretz is a good explanation of why it had to be done.

Nah - I still think it is between Froome, Valverde and Contador.

Dennis will lose too much on some of htose climbs.  tejay too.

If Froome is in reasonable shape he should win.  If not, Valverde will take it

    here is Movistar's official statement:

    Quote
After the events that happened following the team time trial of the Volta a Catalunya, with a one-minute penalty being eventually imposed over the eight riders that claimed victory on the stage yesterday, the Movistar Team wants to express its complete disagreement towards the sanction received.

It's a penalty due to an infringement which we consider absolutely non-existent. The rider performing the action does not "push" his team-mates, but touches the back of them with his right hand to warn them that they must take his position into the team row, a fact that doesn't influence the race's outcome at all.

We deeply regret that a sporting event sees its results distorted by the application of a rule which punishes pushing between team-mates, something which, as shown by the images, was not the case yesterday. We consider this sets a dangerous precedent for the future, since any touch between riders from now on will have to be punished.

    here is Movistar's official statement:
So they dispute that there was effective pushing, saying it was touching at best. Alright, that is up for discussion, and I don't have an opinion one way or the other.

What is not up for discussion is that when this happens in a TTT, the time penalty must logically apply to the whole team.

    here is Movistar's official statement:

Problem being with that is that on one of the occassions the rider had almost slotted back into the line infront of Rojas, albeit having lost about half a bike length on the man infront before the Rojas push/touch. That wasnt to tell the rider that he needed to slot back into line. whether it helped him or not is another matter.

wow  #brasil do they have any riders left?

    http://bike76.com/2017/03/funvic-sofre-baixas-mas-murilo-lidera-na-montanha-da-volta-a-catalunha/

They do have some valid-ish excuses.

    • First race of the season
    • Nicácio had crashed in training before the race in Brazil. Obviously hadn't recovered.
    • Santos had crashed heavily on stage 1

    Quote
Flavio suffered a serious crash in the last descent in Calella. As it fell, it passed over the side shield and fell into a ravine, stopping at a tree.

Some cars that followed behind saw the fall and stopped to help the Brazilian. He had body scrapes and bruises on his femur and rib. At the time, he had difficulty breathing, but he managed to finish. Today, he still had a great performance helping Murilo Affonso. Then, with strong pains, slowed down and ended up completing out of time.

    • The other two OTLs Silva and Pires are really young and inexperienced.

On the plus side, Affonso still leads the KoM, but it will be a tall order to hold onto it all the way to Barcelona.
