The Route

Its a VERY hard route here in the gorgeous north of Spain

With a Team Time Trial of some 41+ km - and lots of lumpy mountains including the super hard Lo Port with the last 8km at 9% ...  this will be a race for the tough men of cycling.   Even the final day is a testing circuit around the gorgeous Montjuic with a 2km @ 5.7% which they do 8 times over.

Full startlist:
http://www.procyclingstats.com/race/_Volta_Ciclista_a_Catalunya_2017_Stage_1_Startlist

The Major Contenders

Froome - *****

Skipped both Paris Nice and Tireno Adriatico this year - but did start racing in the Australian summer (though not the TDU) but still - will always be up there when the mountains are like this.   Can Sky manage a TTT better than they did at TA though?

Contador - *****

Did extremely well at Paris Nice.  Lost time on stage 1 due to wind ... but went within 2 seconds of the top step on the podium in a classic "attack at all costs" performance.

Valverde - ****

With Quintana winning at Tireno, Valverde may feel some pressure to show some early form as well to keep his name in the mind of those in charge ... not that early season form has ever been a problem for Alejandro

Ilnur Zakarin - ***

Ok at Paris Nice.  Always a danger for the podium, and a lot will come down to the TTT - and Lo Port.

Steven Kruijwijk - ***

Pulled out of Paris Nice - but proved last year that he has what it takes in these races.  Will be interesting to see what he can do, though will need the team behind him to do a good TTT and keep him in contention

Adam Yates - **

Did ok at Tireno.  Still has a bit to do, but a good TTT will be a start

Van Garderen - **

Less than impressive in the mountains of Italy.   Will need to improve to match it with the big boys here.

Julian Alaphilippe - **

Very impressive time trial at Paris Nice had him in the leaders jersey at Paris Nice ... but he simply couldnt match the climbers at the pointy end.  Still will eventually get there, and you never know when that will be.

Outsiders
maybe a climber who's team does a great TTT will surprise us here.  It will be very hard for the pro-conti teams to feature in the GC with the time they will give up in the teams time trial though - so I think this one will go to the majors.

Other Interesting Notes

Bahrain Merida showing a bit of lack of depth - or just contempt for Spanish Cycling in sending a team of only 6 ... with Gasparotto leading.

and one more - though not a contender - but Andre Greipel is here this week too.  Not too many sprint stages for the gorilla ... but kudos to him for showing up here.   Bouhanni is here too - but perhaps more as a 'makeup' from dropping out of Paris Nice.   ;p

They should do a decent TTT but I am afraid they will lose a lot to the likes of Movistar, Etixx and Sky anyway. 40km is really long.
wrt the TDF team I see Gogl and Stetina out for Felline, De Kort and Degs

    The TTT is ridiculous.

There are real mountains so it seems unlikely to me that Alaphillipe will be the strongest contender on Quickstep. It's hard to justify mentioning him as a serious contender for the win. In fact quite a few of the "contenders" mentioned in the OP seem a bit odd.

I actually think the TTT stage will be quite a laugh. It'll be ridiculous with huge time gaps, and will more or less ruin the rest of the race, but at least it's a bit of a different prospect to the usual 15km for BMC to sprint round and it might actually shake up the pack in a way we don't expect.

I think Contador will probably win, maybe Zakarin to be his biggest challenger.

Just seen BMC's team. Dennis will be very dangerous, he'll get big time on most other contenders in the TTT. #movistar and #sky also bring a few strong TT guys but Froome is usually not that strong here. Quick Step doesn't seem to have a good team at all for the TTT so guess we shouldn't expect much from Alaphilippe and Martin, although they could get bonus (but there's also Piti :P ).
Looking at the parcours and teams I think Berto will be 2nd again :o behind Piti or Dennis

What happens when organisers put a 41km TTT into a stage race?
Why, nobody sends their best trialists of course. :fp
Having said that, BMC look very strong in comparison to the rest.
Should be good for 1-5 minutes advantage.
Movistar OK, but a lot of teams seem to be relying on 2 or 3 engines to pull their climbers around.
    It's a big ask.

Sky look strong for that, with the exceptions of Mike Snow and Mike Moonlanding who'll be saved for the mountains.

Weird parcours, I wonder why any sprinters are going at all.

And may I just add that Bertie was a legend earlier this week, more of that please.

If you are going to experiment with a freakishly long TTT that will effectively destroy most of the rest of the race, don't do it in a race that clashes with an important cobbled classic. Most of the best big lumps have better things to be doing than hauling their climbers around for one stage and then spending a week getting dropped by the peloton.

Soul Brasil (Funvic) finally get their 2017 season underway. The squad has been reloaded (maybe not the best choice of words) after their multi-bust last year and we'll see three of the numerous youngsters they signed in Catalunya.

    Full team:

    Flavio Santos
    Raphael Pires
    Gabriel Silva
    Caio Godoy
    Magno Nazaret
    Pedro Nicácio
    Murilo Affonso
    Jordi Simón

The youngsters are Pires (20), Silva (19) and Godoy (21). Godoy was at the CMC the past three years so he has the most experience of the trio. Silva had a fairly good stagiaire stint with the team last year too.

I'd have instructed them to target Sky and Movistar instead!
It shouldn't be an issue. I highly doubt they'll be forced ride the TTT on road bikes :lol

I saw that Quick Step's aim is to be top-3 in the TTT. With Cavagna, Schachmann and Vakoc + 5 lightweight climbers. Errr.

Perhaps the TTT is way more lumpy than we think.

Hard to look past Valverde. He could also take bonus seconds on 3 or 4 stages.

I'm thinking Trek will do a quite decent TTT maybe better than people think. I'll go out on a limb and say 3rd or 4th around half a minute behind Movistar and BMC and more or less s.t. as Sky. It'll be just enough to not put Contador out of contention from the start and will allow him to finish 2nd within a few seconds of a BMC or Movistar rider :P

Given the TTT I reckon that the podium will be Valverde, Froome and maybe a BMC if Tejay can show some form. Bardet to win a stage but finish 5th or 6th.

    Maybe Yates for a podium.

the early forecast says that it'll be a rainy weekend in Barcelona. That's not particularly good for Froome's ambitions to win the race, with the Montjuic circuit on the final day

He can hang in if necessary, he's shown that many times. Although no one knows what his form will be like or whether any Sky wheels will disintegrate.

One thing I really don't understand is why Bouhanni and Greipel are turning up.

It's like Chaves racing the 47 Days of Dunquerke.
