Elsy Jacobs world champion
When on March 4, 1933, she arrived in the Jacobs home, no one could imagine that she would one day be raised by her friends to the rank of Grand Duchess. However, 25 years later, she entered the gotha of the great world cycling world by becoming the first world cycling champion in Reims. From that day, her friends and foreign competitors gave the little blonde-haired Luxemburger the nickname "Grand Duchess".

At Garnich, his native village in Luxembourg, time passed quietly. Elsy was the last-born of a family of nine children, six of whom were still alive. According to the unanimous opinion of her loved ones, she quickly revealed a character well tempered behind her delicious playful childish play.

During the long career of Elsy Jacobs, more than one race organizer would get to know his resolute character when it came to negotiating the participation contracts. In the race, you never had to play the most malign with Garnich's daughter, trying to jump in the relays or leaving his share of work to the others, or he would be dropped to the train in the next few minutes.

The professionalism of Elsy was such that in 1957 she decided to cycle her life, and without a driver's license or car, she moved to Paris to "live closer to her shopping" than she did Was going to play every weekend.

1958, the year Elsy Jacobs

After years of struggle on the part of some national federations, the International Cycling Union (UCI) finally agreed to organize women's world championships. Good news for Garnich's daughter, who at 25 was approaching maturity. All his preparation under the direction of Raymond Louviot was going to focus on this great event which was to take place in Reims, on the race track of Gueux, on August 30, 1958, the day before the test of the professional riders. Meanwhile, she had forged a name in the middle. She was on the list of "runners to watch". Had she not in fact won 25 wins in 42 races that year, and not the least, a record! Of these 42 events, she only missed the podium four times!

[...] After an hour of racing, there was no longer any doubt about this performance that Mirror Sprint later called a "Sensational Exploit". It sets a new world record of the hour with 41 km 348m.

The "Grand Duchess" once again wrote a page in the history of women's cycling. Millie Robinson's record now belonged to the past, and it was fourteen years before the Italian Maria Cressari improved the 100-meter performance of Elsy in 1972, at altitude on the track in Mexico City.

When the news reached Luxembourg, the Jacobs family was the first to be surprised: Elsy had not had time to warn his family of his attempt of 9 November!

An unparalleled career

After her world championship title, Elsy was coveted by all cycling race organizers in Europe. Aventurière since always, she now lived more than ever between two suitcases.

Moreover, on 21 June 1959, she "finally" released a first tricolor red-white-blue champion of Luxembourg, a property she would conquer, with the exception of a single year, until 1974. In total, she won 15 titles of Luxembourg champion on the road.

From 1958 onwards, she traveled all over Europe in search of bouquets. All disciplines were welcome: road, track and cyclo-cross. The passion of cycling, popularity and money made her become the happiest cyclist of her time. Elsy was simply made for the competition. In the race, she no longer knew anyone, neither friends nor enemies, she had only one thing in mind: WIN. Thus, from 1955 to 1978, the year of her first retirement, she officially played 1059 races, of which she won 301! She finished 210 times second and got 129 times the third place!

Throughout his career, the major objective of his seasons remained the world road championship. She participated in it a total of sixteen times and finished them all

  • Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.
