Right then :* time with a poll who is winning the GC at the Giro

The only  5 star rated rider, Trying to ride the Giro, TDF double which is the 1 question mark that we don´t know how it will effect his racing, if Nairo has 1 weakness that stands out it is race craft and the ability to throw out the bathwater with baby to take the win. Will have to ride within limits due to the TDF mean he is even less attacking?

:*:*:*:* 1/2
4 1/2 Stars for the Shark, has had an amazing career, won all the GTs, will want to win the 100th edition will have home time advantage, can find form when it counts, has the ability to throw out attacks that may mean he looses the whole race if itdoesn´t work, but doesn´t have the pure class of Nairo

4 stars for Steven, following a similar run in to the 2016 Giro were he was one of the standout performers, has a real desire to win, does he have the team support if required, will the form come together, probably a 3 star rider with an extra because of last year

Disco Tom Still looking for that huge break through, sure the Vuelta was a start, but 2016 wasn´t the greatest GT wise.

G Has the talent to do anything in cycling, and now looks at GT leadership will need to work out the inner team leadership with Landa and limit his bad days to a small dip, will be interesting to see where he ends up, has a strong team

1st Giro has the TDF podium, but lost his way after, has the full backing of the team, has the talent and the will to attack and ride with the heads of state, ITT has improved, all things being equal could podium the Giro

Knows how to win a race, knows how to ride defensibly just keeps on improving, will have to have the team helping Ewan for a little of the race, but is a real podium chance

TJVG twice TDF podium, has taken over from Evans as the GC threat who can just explode on the mountains, has the ability, can the mind fix the job, Having Dennis helps TJ

Bauke Bauke Bauke what to make of you, are you a GT treat or a stage winner who hangs around or a Super Dom who gets leadership

Zakarin the Mad Russian shows from time to time that if all things go well he could win and win big, but then he crashes and falls off the back

Road a great Giro in 2016 for a developing GT rider still trying to workout if he is a GT rider. has a team split to help Joels Love child in the sprints

  • Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

Going by what we have seen this year the podium will be Quintana, Pinot and Yates. Thomas and Dumoulin could be up there as well with the two TTs.

Could Nibali ride himself into form in the third week again? Possibly, but the GC could be well over by the end of stage 9. I think Quintana will want to get a big lead early on Etna and Blockhaus (especially on the TTers) and then just ride defensively and save energy after that.

My spidey senses (usually wrong) tell me that lightning won't strike twice for Kruijswijk. Has anybody seen his "helpers" Clement and JVDB this year?

Quintana stays up-right he wins doesn't he?

I'd say him going in half cocked would be his biggest risk.

Wasn't Mollema 2nd in the Tour last year before he crashed? I'd say he's a good bet for a podium

I think after this Giro Pinot and Dumoulin have to move up at least a half-star! Jungels and Zakarin should get more respect as well.

So now it is done and dusted. Dumoulin takes the race. I think he will need a 2nd GT to rate 4 stars, but maybe I'm stingy. Pinot has also proved himself, although he fell off the podium, he was only very slightly off the level of Nibali and Quintana. He deserves better than 3 stars. Zakarin was looking good, too. I am also thinking that Quintana should be downgraded to 4.5 stars, equal to Nibali.
