Stage 8: Molfetta › Peschici
« on: May 12, 2017, 17:14 »
Stage 8:  Molfetta › Peschici

This stage, 189 kilometres from Molfetta, takes the riders to Italy's Mare Adriatico for the finish in Peschici. The Corsa Rosa came here three times before; Matteo Priamo won in 2008, Franco Pellizotti in 2006 and Danilo Di Luca in 2000.

It's the first timein the history of the Giro that a stage starts in Molfetta though. The route is on flat and on straight roads in the first 90 km, while the following 100 km are constantly undulating, with several curves and changes of direction. Past Manfredonia, the stage clears the Monte Sant’Angelo categorised climb, and then takes the entire scenic route, all the way to Peschici (with a KOM climb in Coppa Santa Tecla and an intermediate sprint in Vieste). The stage finale is fairly complex, with a fast-running descent from 5 to 3 km to the finish, followed by a short flat stretch, up to 1,500 m from the finish. Here begins the closing climb, which grows increasingly steeper as the finish draws nearer (with peaks reaching 12%), and with several sharp bends. The home straight (200 m), on 7-m wide stone-paved road, has a 9-10% uphill gradient.

as usual, the great @Raffilpt has created an interactive profile of the finish:

Difficult to control, and with the hard Blockhaus finish to come the day after, this will probably be a day for the breakaway. But who knows, Cannondale could always be willing to chase

Turned out to be an awesome stage actually. The heat was on from the start,  it was like the Giro organizers told everyone to please put on a show. The breakaway that eventually got away was a very late invention, except #astana LLSanchez

    In the final
#uae Valerio Conti skidded in one of the 160 degree turns on the final climb, so #bahrain Visconti had to brake, #movistar Gorka Izaguirre took of in front and was never caught.

    Honorable mention (!)
#sky Mikel Landa for attacking like it was #astana 2015

The big winner obviously: Italy!  :D  this stage was an overdose in  gorgeous landscape show-off.

that was a really good stage indeed. And probably mainly thanks to #wilier and #gazprom missing the initial breakaway :cool

  • Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

yep was definitely the best stage so far

break took a LONG time to establish - and when it finally went it never got much because of the 2 Italian teams that missed it.

On the major climb, a few bridged, a few dropped and we essentially had a vastly different break, who were finally allowed some leeway.

Not too much though, as now Conti was in the break who was only 2.10 down on GC so Quickstep kept things in check.

No one else really wanted it enough to pull the break back properly though - with hard stages coming up they were all saving everything.

Not the stage the GC boys would have been wanting before the mountains, but definitely a relief for the organisers to have SOMETHING happening  :lol

Strangely enough Landa was mentioned as one of the "flops of the day" by Spaziociclismo.

    Quote
A pretty useless to attack the Spanish. He has said he wants to test and hope that someone was following him to earn second in the standings, but the time for action is certainly not the ideal one in a tract in favor of the group. The hope is that he has not spent too much energy that they can influence it in some way tomorrow.

Despite falling over Conti got one of their "tops of the day", so their judgement could be slightly awry.

I think we will see more and more of Landa attacks 99% will be like this look great on TV be completely stupid and hurt his GC ( this did not) but 1 might come off which will mean other have to chase and G sits on

ps am somewhat caught up now
