[1.1] Winston Salem Cycling Classic
« on: May 22, 2017, 16:46 »
Winston Salem Cycling Classic 29th May

The Winston-Salem Cycling Classic is a UCI 1.1 and USA CYCLING PRO-ROAD TOUR sanctioned Road Race. Athletes from around the cycling world travel to Winston-Salem to collect UCI points and over twenty five thousand dollars in prize money. The race circuit consists of a challenging route that travels over 8.5 Miles around our lovely city.

The organizers take advantage of the long weekend to have the crit on Saturday, a Gran Fondo on the Sunday (win dinner with Robbie and Bob Roll!) with the main race on Monday. There's also a music festival type thing running alongside it (Barenaked Ladies anyone?).

The western half of the course looks exactly the same as last year's with the only changes occurring the eastern portion.

    That's a really sh*t startlist for a 1.1 race. :(

Yeah, why not go back to 1.2? Could still invite the same teams above and add in a few club ones to give a fuller field.

There must be some reason behind it. UCI points for WC qualification?

So where is David Drouin and why hasn't he ridden a single race for the team so far this year? That was the question I asked myself. College seemed a logical answer, but no it's a failed drugs test......

I don't think that the US quota is dependent on the extra points that some Conti riders pick up at this race - those riders probably don't even count for the nations ranking that determines the Worlds spots now.

    Quote
The top three riders in the men’s road race waited until the final quarter of the 13-lap event before starting their breakaway.

Roth “It was kind a fluky thing; I rolled off on a downhill and Bruno bridged and then Robin came up on the hill, and from there we were committed to going to the line”

Carpenter “At the very end, I knew I was the strongest guy in that three-man group or the guy who had the most left. So I knew if I only went up that hill steady but hard, they’d probably be able to stay on my wheel. I had to hit them as hard as I could right from the bottom and distance them and demoralize them a little bit.”

Roth “On the final lap, I didn’t even really try to respond, and Robin was so strong that I was just trying to keep my rhythm and not blow up and, hopefully, maybe we could roll him back, but when he went, there was no option for me to try and go with him. He was super strong.”
