Tour of Slovenia 2017

Official website: http://www.tourofslovenia.si/en/
Official twitter: https://twitter.com/TourOfSlovenia

Leader's jersey:

I hadn't really noticed this race on the calendar before but it looks like a good way to fill some of the gap between the Giro and the Tour. Recent strong performances from Slovenian riders came to mind: I'd not really noticed that there are a fair number of strong Slovenian riders dotted around the pro peloton, aren't there?

Not really sure how to display these stage profiles, but here are the links:
Stage 1 http://www.tourofslovenia.si/media/doc/1_etapa_profil_2017.pdf
Stage 2: http://www.tourofslovenia.si/media/doc/2_etapa_profil_2017.pdf
Stage 3: http://www.tourofslovenia.si/media/doc/3_etapa_profil_2017.pdf
Stage 4: http://www.tourofslovenia.si/media/doc/4_etapa_profil_2017.pdf

Some beautiful towns and landscapes in these.

This year there will be Eurosport coverage, and five WT teams
#bora #uae #orica #bahrain #didata
will be racing alongside
*it  #androni #wilier #nippo
*si  #adria #rog   #teamsi

  • Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

Some of Slovenia's big guns are in the Tour de Suisse, such as Simon Špilak, Marko Kump and Matej Mohoric.  Of course Katusha are not at the Tour of Slovenia, but UAE Team Emirates are and it's a shame to see Kump and Mohoric miss out on their home race. UAE are bringing Polanc, though.

Orica are bringing Mezgec, while Bahrain Merida are bringing four of their six Slovenians - Bozic, Novak, Pibernik and Per.

Anybody here spend any time in Slovenia? I checked the race maps - it covers a fair bit of the country. Is Slovenia a place where anyone would consider going on holiday, as it might be cheaper than Italy? I'm watching a recording of the 1st stage, and I see signs that the economy is pretty strong (good roads, good signage, new buildings, new vehicles).

I've been there on holiday in 2007: Soča valley (in the mountains, just across the border from Italy), Trieste (I know, that's Italy), Istria (that's Croatia), Ljubljana, and back home.

Nice country, beautiful landscape, good food ... :)
The economy is quite good, as you say - Slovenia always was the richest part of Yugoslavia, and that's also why they were the first to split off. They have the Euro by now, so we Europeans don't even have to exchange currency.

Ljubljana is a great city - not too big, but has everything you need, and also very bike-friendly by now, I've heard.
The country has everything you need, too: Sea (a few kilometres of Adriatic coastline), hills (most of the country), mountains (the Julian Alps), rivers (in the far east).

Finally, the race is sponsored a.o. by Slovenia's tourist board.
If the race makes you consider a holiday there, they've done a good job! :cool

Exactly - and, as you point out, Trieste is a minor jaunt away, and what should be an easy border crossing. I don't know about the Croat borders, but they've got the whole Dalmation coastline just south of Istria - no shortage of historic seaside destinations, and legendary climate.
