    Andre's statement:

    Quote
Today, I received notification from the UCI that my A Sample, from a urine test done at my home on June 18th, tested positive for Erythropoietin. I have requested to the UCI that my B sample be tested as soon as possible.

Getting the chance to ride at the pinnacle of professional cycling is the greatest honor I could ever hope for, and I was looking forward to doing my best for my team and myself at the Tour. I believe in clean sport and have always conducted myself as a clean athlete, but I realize that this news puts a dark cloud on not just myself but also on our sport and my team, teammates and staff. Before anything else, those people are my friends and colleagues for whom I have unlimited respect, and under no circumstances would I ever do something that could put them, their families or their reputations in jeopardy.

I am fully aware that I will be presumed to be guilty, but it's important to me to say that I am devastated by this news and I wanted to state that I have never taken any illegal substances. I've seen firsthand through my career the awful effects that performance enhancing drugs have had on our sport, and I would never want to be a part of that. I've always tried to be a constructive influence in the peloton and on young, aspiring cyclists. It is my great hope that the B sample will come back as negative and clear me of any wrongdoing.

Until then, I hope that those who know me, trust me when I say that I'm innocent, and that my colleagues and cycling fans everywhere don't judge me too quickly during this difficult time.

well, let's wait and see. I haven't had the impression of him as a "dirty" rider so far, looking at his way of riding, his results, daily blogs during the grand tours and so on. But well... who knows

Ha and his results got worse after leaving "the clean team".  :shh

On another note Haimar-sensei faces the biggest challenge of his career - how to stay hidden from the TV cameras given that all stages will be broadcasted from start to finish this year AND help Contador.

Being portuguese I'm very sad about these news.
I just hope the B sample comes out negative and he's cleared.

I can see the lower levels of the sport still doing EPO - and the amateurs. The competitive spirit will drive some people to justify any lengths to themselves. But a pro level? That, in itself, is so shocking with stupidity that it seems unbelievable.  Cardoso is dead-on when he said in his statement that he knows he will be presumed guilty. If the B sample is positive, his career is dead - even if it was the urine that somehow got tainted, rather than the rider.

I'm hoping his B sample comes out negative.

BTW, if you read this and haven't read the Gaiman blog post linked above by JSG - I recommend it. Good blog entry.

this is still ongoing. Now at the CAS

    https://www.sacbee.com/sports/article240580101.html

"Excessive alcohol consumption by Cardoso was suggested by his lawyer as a cause of the positive test.

Cardoso said he began drinking wine aged around seven as a daily tradition with his family, though in 2017 it was less common among cyclists as the culture of the sport changed."

Im sorry but if his B sample was negative (or at least 'not posative') then he should get off.

no matter his ridiculous "wine/drinking' explanation ... if they are to take a posative as proof of guilt, the B sample must confirm ...

yeah, I really thought he had a case - until they came up with the drinking story.

But it surely will be interesting to see how CAS decides. Tyler Hamilton kept his Olympic gold medal back then because the b-sample was useless, as far as I can remember (but that's 15+ years ago of course)

Could've gone in the Aderlass thread too but there might be a few nervous riders about.
