Looks like Cascade Cycling Classic is on for 2018. Now, let me tell you, I lived in Bend, the epicenter for this race, in the early 1970's. Before the race got started. It struck me then that the town was like a Hollywood star - it lives on its name. The population, even then, was greater than the local work could provide jobs for. But it still became even more well-known and popular. And people kept moving there.

However, it has some GREAT roads for a race. A LOT of them. And the race make use of SOME of them. I checked the 2017 route - and I see some selectivity, but not as much as I would like. Stages 1 and 5 look like more traditional Euro selectivity. Stage 1 has a nice mountain finish. I know that road - its a beaut. And stage 5 presented some nice repeated selection climbs.

Anyway - its a beautiful section of country. Very different from other areas. You find high desert (Bend, Prineville, Redmond) and Cascade mountain range (McKenzie Pass, Mt Bachelor, etc). The high desert has lots of sage and flat, open landscape. The transition zone has lots of Douglas fir - and they are HUGE!!.  And the mountain passes are real, switchbacky, mountain passess! The Bend side of the pass is much easier than the western side - too bad they don't race the western face!

It's good that it is continuing, but unsurprisingly it will not be as a UCI race. The elevation to it becoming a .2 race this year almost proved fatal with both financial and organisational problems rearing their heads. The farcical finish to the final stage didn't help matters either.

So it's under new management now, a new date in the calendar, a return of the amateur categories and a new focus on "a junior aspect to the race" according to the Bend Bulletin report.

No GP Saguenay in 2018. Who is to blame? G7 :angry

The local police would be too busy protecting Frau Merkel etc on their normal race dates and they were unable to find a suitable alternative.

    Quote
The leaders of the cycling GP have therefore decided not to hold the edition in 2018 and postpone it until 2019 by providing bonuses already envisaged. "We are going to try to attract some stronger teams to continental pro and we even thought to add a time trial to make the competition more difficult," says Steve Potvin. For his part, Sébastien Gagnon said that the decision to postpone the event was not taken with joy of heart. "It's clear that this was not good news for the Board or volunteers. We met them last week and we consulted them. We had 200 volunteers and we wanted to know if they would be back and the response was almost unanimous to the effect that they supported us in the decision, "

I shall lay at least part of the blame at the foot of Les Aiglons. The UCI is notoriously reluctant to allow races to change dates.

Damn! Beaten on my home turf!   :S

Anyway...I just read some national press stuff on this. They say the Tana-Kjøllefjord is going to be hard and for the climbers.

    I say
    1) it is drop dead gorgeous beatiful landscape, but a bit too late in the season for blood withdrawals by mosquito
    2) almost never ending stage? The route number is 888,  as close to ∞ as it gets
    3) if you turn right instead of left to Kjøllefjord, you will be in Mehamn...as far north as you can get on European mainland.
    4) the climbs are there, but most of the day it is wide open wind exposed landscape, a team of roleours or a carriage of reindeers should get across the tundra on Nordkynhalvøya in good style. There has never been a bike race in a landscape like this .... closest match: somewhere on the Arabian peninsula.
    5) the catch is, this late in summer, this far north, this far above sea level - it can be any kind of weather from impenetrable fog (no helicopters..) to snow (no cyclists...) to a lovely sunny day.

(I spent a couple of summers camping on the wilds out there a few years ago - it is not really known as it is one of Norway's most desolate corners - but it is absolutely unforgettable!)

In short...I don't really care about the climbing...until we get a real MTF in Tour des Fjords... but this stage I am really looking forward to it anyway.  :D

This is similar territory to where Nordhaug won a stage a few years back?

That was at Nordkapp. Touristically sold as the northermost point on the European mainland, but it is actually on an island. In contrast, the northernmost tip of the Nordkyn peninsula (where the stage will finish in Kjøllefjord) is actually on the mainland, no doubt (The peninsula is almost cut at the middle, only kept together by a few meters of sand - but that still counts for mainland. The Nordkyn peninsula is the one two peninsula's east of where you will find the way to Nordkapp. Quite similar, but different!

(Nerd extra: geographers care about maps and blue color and classify continuous continent as absence of interrupting water or something like that. Geologists don't care about water - there are two types of crust floating on the earth's mantle: oceanic and continental. They come with different mineral assemblages of different density and the continental crust is lighter thus generally floats high up above the water - but there are areas of continental crust under the sea and of oceanic crust on land....or perhaps more correctly land on oceanic crust...
To make a long story short: The European continent as the geologist sees it, extends far northwards,  under the Barents sea, and all the islands on the way to the north pole are still on the same continent. This is unfortunately difficult to sell to tourists   :shh)

Bless. Now they even invite Conti teams to WorldTour races.

I know the Tour of California did the same last year - but with three new *us PCTs, I don't see any repeat of it there. This is getting ridiculous - either you're a WorldTour race, or you're not.
Note that nothing in the UCI rulebook mentions Conti teams at WorldTour races - they simply blatantly disregarding their own rules for the purpose of ... well, what purpose exactly? :fp

I'm sure Dubai would love to be a WT race, but at the moment it's just a HC event.
