Weak field for Haut Var by the standards of past years. :( How will we be able to measure the sheer greatness of a breakout performance by the next Tiernan-Locke?

Slight extension of the course for La strade Bianche 2018 (both women's and men's editions). There is an extra  5 km between the start and the first gravels. Also some gravel sections are changing.  Race day is March 3rd!

For a true monument status, they should make it even longer (like add 40 kms).

    (I couldn't find the women's course image).

Disappointing to hear that but it really is a small operation if you look at who's running it. I seem to recall reading some years ago that the guys wanted to stop because they were getting old but there was nobody else to take it on.

Whaaaaaa!!! You do realise you are telling a Belgian Spring Junkie there will be two days without lavishly creamy mayonnaise in his annual Flemish Fix!

This also highlights the problem of having a button to show appreciation of the post when it's called 'like'. I just can't get myself to press the like button on messages that convey crap news. Sorry search, one 'liked' thumbs up that will never show up on your Velorooms record!

On the (only) plus side: at least we are spared two days of Kirby sniggering at length about people getting frisky in the dunes. Or ill-timed did-you-know asides about the abundance of dedicated cycle lanes in this part of the world. I could swear there is a google map pin on his smart phone that prompts him to roll out that pearl of wisdom again. Each year.

Was the cut always going to happen given the change of position in the calendar with Dwaars door Vlanderen?

Interesting that you say they were looking for someone to take over the race. Given its position in the calendar and the number of days it was run over it might have been the sort of race that Velon would have been interested in to turn into a Hammer Series event.

Interesting that you say they were looking for someone to take over the race. Given its position in the calendar and the number of days it was run over it might have been the sort of race that Velon would have been interested in to turn into a Hammer Series event.

Well a lot of noise was made about that, yes, not least because the juggernaut of Flanders Classics is so at odds with these traditional, locally organised races on the calendar, and is known to throw its considerable weight around with the UCI.

The organisers are a bit vague about who wanted to cut the race to two days (teams or the UCI acting on team feedback) but it wasn't their own intention.

Either way, there is no appetite from teams for a kind of sprint tournament on Day 1 instead of an opening stage, so two days it will be, although surprisingly they still talk about wanting to make it a WT event in the future.

As to your other point, Velon would have a lot of competition trying to get into the Belgian market, I think.

FC splits the big races of the Belgian scene with Golazo, which has recently become involved in De Panne-Koksijde as an organisation partner (and was behind the sprint tournament proposal), so perhaps it has an eye on more in the future.

Where FC specialises in Classics, Golazo does stage races, currently Eneco and the Baloise Belgium Tour.

Golazo runs all sorts of events in various sports, including sportives and fun days, not just competitions. In cycling, for example, it has taken over lots of sportives from local clubs, professionalised and bundled them into series and found title sponsors. I have ridden lots of its events and they're very popular. Lately it has added pro CX events to its two-wheeled repertoire and I daresay it could probably challenge FC for ownership or stewardship of future races if it so wished.

No Alberta however, which is bad news for the race. They only managed to scrape together 11 teams this year (1 WT team) and if they can't even persuade US teams to make the trip, then the future looks very bleak to me.

    Very bleak ie. non-extant.

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/tour-of-alberta-cycle-peloton-edmonton-race-1.4537280

    Quote
After five years, it appears the Tour of Alberta professional cycling race will be no more.

With too much financial uncertainty, the Alberta Peloton Association, which hosts the event, said Thursday it had no choice but to cease operations and discontinue any future planned events.

"This decision did not come easily," said board chair Jeffrey Hansen-Carlson in a news release. "With the current economic conditions and decreases in traditional funding sources, we had no other option."
