[2.HC] Tour of Utah
« on: July 23, 2017, 11:11 »
Larry H.Miller Tour of Utah

The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah, referred to as "America's Toughest Stage Race™," is a week-long, professional cycling stage race for the best men’s teams in the world. The 2017 event will be held July 31-Aug. 6. Now in its 13th year, the event was elevated in 2015 as a 2.HC-rated UCI stage race, making it one of the premier events in North America. The 2017 Tour of Utah includes 10 host venues across the state and spans 605 miles of racing and 36,525 feet of climbing.

Returning to the Tour for the first time since 2011 is the individual time trial (ITT), which will be a six-mile, uphill race against the clock to a finish line at Brighton Ski Resort at the uppermost section of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Also returning, for the first time since 2009, is the fan-friendly final stage in Salt Lake City, with finishing circuits around the Utah State Capitol buildings and Avenues neighborhood.

The signature “Queen Stage” of the Tour has been reconfigured this year, but remains one of the toughest finishing climbs for any UCI stage race, featuring the hors category (HC, or beyond classification), six-mile ascent of Little Cottonwood Canyon to Snowbird Resort. The other mountaintop finishes are on Stage 2 at Snowbasin Resort and on Stage 3 with the ITT in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Source

Stage 1  »  Logan  ›  Logan   (212.3km)

The return of squashy cat. Reijnen won the sprint here in 2015 after a late Phinney attack.

Stage 2  »  Brigham City  ›  Snowbasin Resort   (151.1km)

A new MTF - huzzah! According to the blurb it is 6 miles at 6%, but as you can see from the profile that includes a downhill section. I'll map it closer to the time.

Stage 3  »  Big Cottonwood Canyon TT   (9km)

First TT in the race since 2011. Average gradient of 5.5%.

Stage 4  »  South Jordan  ›  South Jordan   (201.1km)

Probably a sprint stage, but there is a 10 mile gravel road section and wind could play a part.

Stage 5  »  Layton  ›  Bountiful   (185km)

Logan Owen and Reijnen won reduced sprints the last times they had this finish.

Stage 6  »  Heber Valley  ›  Snowbird Resort  (99km)

They've rejigged the queen stage this year. It's a much shorter affair at under 100km (usually 170-180 in previous editions) and instead of going over Guardsmans Pass they will use the lower American Fork Canyon.

Stage 7  »  Salt Lake City circuit   (117.5km)

The same circuit as the one used in 2013 (slightly different to the 2014 edition). Matthews won the sprint then ahead of GVA and Stuyven.

    https://www.tourofutah.com/race/teams

    Competing teams:

    BMC

    Bardiani CSF
    Caja Rural
    Cycling Academy
    Nippo Vini-Fantini
    Novo Nordisk
    UnitedHealthCare

    Amore & Vita
    Axeon Hagens Berman
    Cylance
    Elevate
    Hangar 15 (ie. Canyon)
    Holowesko Citadel
    Jelly Belly
    Rally
    Silber

We already knew this, but the big news is no Cannondale or Trek. The extra WT races make this part of the year a busy time for the bigger teams and Utah in this case is the loser.

Normally I would have said that since only Rally and Jelly Belly were at California, this race would now become the major target of the year for Axeon and Holowesko, but will they view the Colorado Classic (which will have those missing WT teams) as the bigger fish now?

I just took a look at the Colorado Classic course. Gag me. Typical American stage race design from 1970. Boring. Really boring. Maybe all the WT teams should regard this like the Euro post GT crits - as a necessary PR thing - but not real important for anything else. OTH, Tour of Utah has had consistently good courses over the years.

I usually watch Tour of Utah on Tour Tracker - or on recorded download later in the day.

I think the organizers have looked at what happened to the US Pro and have decided to try doing things a bit differently (ie. cheaper). The buzz words on the website are sustainability and fan-friendly.

    Quote
Racing events have often met with financial challenges in this country, despite great support for the sport and for the events themselves. RPM Events Group’s approach is designed to leverage the sport’s enthusiastic following, including the growing mass-participation craze, while keeping costs from outpacing revenue.

“We are shifting our thinking away from week-long stage races to a hub and series concept to contain costs, open up new revenue streams and create exciting and engaging community events,” said RPM Events Group CEO David Koff. “While the format is different, we are deeply indebted to and respectful of the previous efforts in Colorado and Virginia and hope to build on their success.”

“This is about more than developing a couple of bike races. This is about creating sports and entertainment properties that are not only memorable for the spectators, but valuable to the host cities and sponsors, and sustainable into the future,”

So circuits, hub design, music festival etc etc

We'll see how it goes anyway. Sure they could have done with another tougher day as realistically only stage two can produce gaps and it might even come down to bonuses, but I've been told small GC gaps are more exciting, right ? ;)

They raced in here in 2015. Sonny got a few top tens for them with the best result a second place. Pirazzi was their rider on the climbing days, but still only finished 15th overall.

Andreetta is the only one to return from that previous visit.

    :onfire1 :onfire1 :onfire1

    Bookwalter

    Tvetcov

I wouldn't say it's Bookwalter's to lose, but there should be a gulf in class between WT and CT (where most of his challengers will come from).

    Today's stage starts in ~5h30.

After much huffing and puffing a break of ten not so strong riders got away after ~45km. The peloton were happy to give them a max of ~8 minutes and that was gradually eroded away on the cat 2 climb and long descent back into Logan. A scrappy finale with only Axeon showing some some semblance of a extended train. Magner had to go early and just managed to hang on in a blanket finish.

We had to wait until after the first intermediate for the break to get away. Today it was Rosskopf, Canola and Clark. I wasn't paying too much attention, but I think the gap went up to over 5 minutes. Rosskopf was the only one still to be in front going over the North Ogden Divide, but he was mopped up just after by a reduced peloton of ~40 riders.

De Vos (and Narvaez who quickly gave up) attacked on the first half of the Snowbasin ascent. He never got a gap much bigger than 10 seconds, but he kept plugging away and we thought he might have made it, but was caught with just over a km to go. Piccoli was the next to try and looked like he was going to pull off a big surprise ...... until he was overtaken by Bookwalter and Kuss in the last few metres.

All three of the teams on the podium can be pretty happy with their day's work.

No bonuses on the stage, so Kuss takes over the race lead.

Skis for the winner of the stage.

Some disappointing performances out there - Narvaez, Bookwalter, Mancebo, Eisenhart, Ellsay. That should make for some aggressive racing on later days though.

However that probably won't be today as the gravel section is roughly halfway through the course and the weather forecast looks to be of the non-windy variety ..... but you never know.

Another scrappy finish. You can see it better on the overhead shot, but Murphy just manges to find a gap between McCabe and Lawless without having to lose too much speed while Raim (who is coming quicky) has to brake as he is blocked in behind the UHC man and Cote from Silber.

It played out pretty much as before this stage. Some attacks and a bit of a selection on the first ascent of the Bench. Ditto again on lap two with the leading grp being reduced down to ~12 riders (Powless was dropped for example), but the plateau on top doesn't lend itself to people staying away and so a small group sprint seemed inevitable.

Don't have time to go into detail now, but there was quite a bit of car drafting going on yesterday after crashes and when I say quite a bit, I mean laughable amounts. Carpenter, Bookwalter and stage winner McCabe all guilty. Will we see penalties?

Also is concussion protocol a new thing for all races? This is the first time I've seen it happening in cycling. Skujins crash in California might have something to do with it.
