My bad. I hadn't looked to see if there was a thread!

    I'd already done one elsewhere.
I'll add some bits and bobs.

Once again, bad weather for the Angliru.
That top section of the Cordal looks ripe for an attack, followed by a balls to the wall descent.
Anything could happen on the downhill.
Hard to forget that the climb was dropped for a number of years, after all the fuss that followed the 2002 edition.

yeah, there are still one or two things at stake...

With the bad weather, I think there's a chance for Froome to be cracked under pressure. But it won't be easy...

Villella is looking comfortable now, especially as Lopez seemed to be fading a bit over the past days. But with 35pt still available the jersey isn't sealed yet, aslo because of the fact that a draw (eg. by taking the first two KOMs, or by taking one and coming 2nd at the finish) would be enough for Lopez to win. I don't think Villella can score, so he needs to wait and hope. Someone like Dombrowski may be send up the road to take away points though.

6th or lower for Froome today, and Trentin could take the jersey with a win tomorrow. 4th or 5th, and he would need a win + the intermediate points tomorrow. If Froome finishes in the Top 3, it's over. Also Nibali could theoretically come back into contention if he wins the stage and Froome finishes outside the Top ~10

This one is looking solid for Froome, but if a breakaway with guys like Majka, Bardet and Denifl takes most of the mountain points today - or if he has a bad day and drops off the podium - the jersey could fall in Lopez hands

I expect this to be a mano a mano. I expect Nibali to ride like it was 2013. I expect his collection of Vuelta 2nd placings to rival that of Chris Froome soon, because Froome doesn't look like he is going to add one more this year.  :D

Sky has been a very impressive team this year, leading to the usual stream of accusations about lack of panache flowing on social media. I think that's a Stamp on Sky's captain  which Froome inherited from Wiggins and he has ever since struggled to get rid of it. I don't think it treats Froome fair at all.  On social media he is caught behind a rock and a hard place: if he doesn't attack, he lacks panache. If he launches some of the more spectacular attacks of recent years, distancing his rivals, doping accusations fly.

One of Froome's known weaknesses is cold and wet weather. He will need to go fast up the Angliru today, or he might start freezing. If some of the forecasts suggesting a misty windy and wet 10 degrees strike, the weather clearly favors his main opponent, who picked Froome and Contador apart on a couple of rainy days in northern France in 2014 and won the Giro attacking into a snowstorm up Tre Cime do Lavaredo. Nibali is within striking distance, but under ordinary circumstances doesn't look strong enough today. However, really bad weather might be his call to start shining.

Today's sideshow will be Contador's struggle for podium. I think he can make it, Kelderman and Zakharin seems to be more autoestrada climbers and less goat path climbers if I can put it that way. Decent way to quit if he does, my ears and eyes are a bit overwhelmed by all the praise for his efforts lately - however, his comeback since the disastrous Andorra stage in this race has been impressive although I think he would be closer to the podium with fewer and more decisive attacks. Attack every stage, and you'll be lacking something when it really counts OR  :D

    We'll see...

No rider deserves any win for what they have done in the past, they have to earn it on the day and both Contador and Froome have done that.

However I think it's fair to say they both come very close to deserving their respective rewards anyway (99.9% of the way). Contador gets to end his illustrious career on a winning note and Froome finally gets his Vuelta GC win after several close calls.

    yeah, happy for Contador

looks like #vkom Villella missed the time cut of 25:23 - same as 25 others though, so let's wait and see what they will do

So were ~25 riders OTL? Any sign of a punishment if so?

according to the rules, yes, definitely. The cut is at 12% for a category 5 stage at this average speed, and that's 25:23. It's not mentioned at all in the ~pdf stage communique though, so apparently it's not enforced, and there's no punishment

Cycling's usual casual attitude to rules, apart from occasional shock application, continues.

Even when a legitimate workaround the rules exists, as it does in this case (" only  in exceptional, unforeseeable cases of force majeure, the Commissaries Panel may extend the finishing time limits after consultation with the Organiser") they do not seek to make clear what the exceptional, unforeseeable case was.

Wanting to have a few competitive sprinters on display in Madrid is not force majeure.
