The 2012 Sibiu Tour
« on: July 02, 2012, 03:48 »
This month as the tour distracts the part timers the real cycling fan should be focusing their eyes on the summers second Romanian race. A storming course through beautiful Transylvanian countryside and the presence of everyones favourite Bulgarian climber and his trusty Ukrainian domestic. What more could you want.

    Prologue

2.4km prologue time trial including by my count 18 90 degree bends on small cobbled streets the Sibiu

Sibiu is located in Transylvania, Romania and is located some 282 km north-west of Bucharest. Sibiu is one of the most important cultural centres of Romania and was ranked as "Europe's 8th most idyllic place to live" by Forbes.

The city of Sibiu and its surroundings are one of the most visited areas in Romania. It holds one of the best preserved historical sites in the country, many of its medieval fortifications having been kept in excellent state.

    Stage 1.

no messing with the Sibiu tour. First stage proper and straight into the climbing proper with a MTF in Paltinis at 1442m. Păltiniş is a mountain resort in Transylvania, Romania, 35 km south-west from Sibiu in the Cindrel Mountains.

Surrounded by conifer forests Paltinis is the highest resort in Romania. It is a popular winter destination and in summer it is sought for its peacefulness. There is always snow and skiing lessons for its fresh air and for the easily accessible trekking routes.

The final climb is 14.83km with an average of 5% and peak of 9% and comes after 3 cat 3 climbs on route

    Stage 2
ok so we have had a prologue blast around corners for the young, powerful and stupid, we have had a mountain top finish at the highest ski resort in Romania ont eh first stage proper how can we make the race a little more awesome. How about another time trial. 10km over a cat 3 climb. yeah that should do it.

Cisnadie was settled in the 12th century by Saxon colonists settled here, and was named Heltau by the Germans in 1323. The most important architectural sight of Cisnădie is the fortified church located in the town center built in the 12th century as a Romanesque basilica. The first tower-clock in Transylvania was installed here in 1425 and the first lightning rod in SE Europe was erected in 1795

the climb is 1.85 km, average 5% and a peak of 8%.

    Stage 3

ok after that start how can things get better. Ladies and gentleman may i introduce officially the best road in the world

yes it is the Transagarasan road that earned the title from Top Gear UK.

if that does not win you over then look at the profile. what a snorter of a stage

the climbing is split among three designated climbs, that little 1.7 lump near the start which reaches 9% but only averages 5. but then come the big daddies. although it is officially split into 2 climbs what follows is 23km of climbing with an average of 6% but sections up to 12.5%

and look where they finish. a town only accessible by cable car during the winter

i am really hoping there is video from this one.

    Stage 4

Final stage. A nice little city circuit for the sprinters? no. more climbing to come

a cat 1 and 3 cat 3 climbs on this stage and 3 of those climbs have sections in double figures.
the final climb is the easiest but with what has come before i think we will at best see a small break away group win this stage

    CK BANSKA BYSTRICASLOVAKIA
    Martin HaringSVK19861224
    Ivan ViglaskySVK19850512
    Martin FranoSVK19780503
    Miroslav DebnarSVK19830421
    Lukas BatoraSVK19850917
    Roman ZrelicaSVK19850323
    Jakub NovakSVK19880323

A Slovakian team which i like for their they presence over the years in a number of African races. Ivan Viglaský has done well at the tour of Cameron of the years with several strong stage placings and top 5's overall. He was also the Slovakian U23 champion back in 2007.  Interestingly (well it interested me) Martin Haring won the Himalaya Mountain bike race last year. Jakub Novák was Slovakian national champion in 2010, and interestingly 4th in the Czech national championships in 2011 (not sure how that works). he is a strong time trialer with 4th in European U23 championships last year. expect him to feature in the prologue and stage 2.The rest of the team have mainly raced only domestically.

    Matthias SchnapkaGER19800727
    Christian PothGER19861112

    Marius PrunteGER19900205
    Thorsten ReschGER19800723z
    Timo SchäferGER19820809

A german team, rode the An Post Ras this year without really distinguishing themselves (ok they took second on one stage but the guy that did that is not riding here). Karsten Keunecke seems to be the pick of the bunch with a 7th overall in Cameroon and a win in the 2010 Tour de Kosovo.

    Thill TomLUX19900331
    Kohlvelter KevinLUX19901005
    Bihel CesarFRA19880411

Sascha Weber got 6th on a stage of the tour of Luxembourg and has had a few cyclocross results in his time too including 6th in world U23. He was 6th overall in this race last year so must be considered a contender for overall. Tom Thill can TT a bit so may feature in prologue and stage 2.

    Alessio MarchettiITA1988O828
    Anatoliy KashtanUKR19870425

They are Italian and disappointingly not sponsored by Dennis Rodman. Anatoliy Kashtan took 2nd in a baby Giro stage last year but Marchetti is pick of the team and came second overall in this race last year so must be one of the favourites along with a certain Bulgarian

    Bartosz ZajacPOL19930212
    Norbert KrakowiakPOL19930220
    Konrad TomasiakPOL19911202

A young Polish team with little more than domestic results to their name. if i had to pick one of these guys to do well (do i have to?) i would choose Konrad Tomasiak cause he won a prologue once and came 3rd on stage 4 of this race last year.

Norwegians with names that for some reason sound a little like swearing. cannot find out much about these guys but they are one of the 10 continental ranked teams in this race so should be rights do something

    Konya Torku Seker SporTurkey
    Ivailo GabrovskiBUL19780131

    Muhammet AtalayTUR19890515
    Rasim ReisTUR19921116
    Yuriy MetlushenkoUKR19760104

The big boys of the race. Tour of Turkey winner Gabrovski, if he is anywhere near that kind of form should wipe the floor with this field on the big climbs. He has his faithful lieutenant from Turkey Grechyn who spent days at a time riding on the front of the bunch while the rest of this time faded to the back. Even if Gabrovski does not fire they have Bileka, once of discovery and 5 times giro rider, who also came 5th this year in Iranian Azerbaijan race. While the team struggled at times in Turkey this race is not off the same level and expect to see them dominate. Mustafa Sayar was second in Turkish national champs and expect him to feature in prologue as can Rasim Reis who was second in Turkish TT champs.

Hungarians. I only know 2 Hungarians That kaiser soze dude and my esperanto pen pal as a kid. Neither appear to be riding so i am a little short on background info. Luckily the interweb tells me István Cziráki once came second in a Romanian stage race and that is good enough for me to back him with everything i have got. Although Péter Simon was 8th in this race last year so may save a tenner for him.

Finally we are back on safer ground with the SP Tableware boys. And not just because i just spent the weekend being forcefed Greek food like a Turkey being prepared for christmas. some will remember Tamouridis from the Tour of Romania where he failed to win overall despite finishing in the top 5 on 8 stages. Ioannis is the main man of greek cycling and must start the favourite for the prologue. He may well feature on stage 2 and stage 4 as well but the big climbs are too much for him. De La Parte was second in the Tour of Romania and will be their man for GC. Topchanyuk came 6th in last years race so may feature at the pointy end of the race.

As you will appreciate normally it is very hard to find anything interesting to say about Belgians but in this case they have thrown the name of Bart Wellens in the mix. As in ex Cyclo cross world champion Bart Wellens. in fact as far as i can tell this entire team are a bunch of Cyclocross and mountain bikers. not sure if google translate misled them on the course description or they have a really bad view of Romanian roads. Will be interesting to see if they feature at all, must be some power in this guys so may do well on the tight cobbles of the prologue

I think these guys are the toughest of the home teams (they are the only continental ranked Romanian team) and will be looking to impress. Sergiu Cioban is the new Romanian TT champion while Lovassy came 7th in last years Tour of Romania. However all eyes will be on Tonys hero Kvasina. Kvasina, coming from a family that work hard to whip Tony's arse when ever they can, won the recent tour of Romania and while i hate to say that the big climbs are likely to prove too much for him here we will be hoping for the best.

Unfortunately, it's definitely not on Eurosport. And live coverage will be difficult to come by, videos could pop up though.

These people will be covering it on various levels
    http://digitalsport.ro/
    http://www.gsp.ro/
    http://www.romania-actualitati.ro/

Will have a closer look at the partners tomorrow.

nope, you can only watch digisport if you have romanian cable from RCS&RDS. Its basically Romanias main cable tv and internet provider. So cant even use a proxy or vpn

    It is on sopcast though
    sop://broker.sopcast.com:3912/98659

    Broadcast Times

    Stage 1 Wednesday 1945-2115 Local time (Cet+1)
Stage 2 Thursday 1800-2000 Local time
Stage 3 Friday 1800-1930 Local Time
    Stage 4 Saturday 1400-1530 Digisport2
    Stage 5 Sunday 1900-2030 Digisport3

If you dont have sopcast its in the streaming section. Works on windows, linux, mac and android. Just tested and I can watch Romanian TV on my phone (Sshot)

Prologue all very impressive. Very well organised, nice technical cobbled course, good tv coverage. Bodes well for the remaining stages. Will be interesting to see how the coverage is once they are out on the road and there are vehicles etc involved. But so far, looks a very well organised race.

Video shortly as well as results.

really strong showing by the Telenet team, but they have a few sprinters and cross riders in their midst. Great ride by the young sprinter Bergsland who picked up his first pro win. Very technical prologue, short, lots of turns and bends, and almost entirely cobbled. Not a surprise to see the belgian team put five riders in the top eight placings.

No idea who this is, but THATS how to ride cobbles. Im told these cobbles are new, laid in around 2007

Again, not a clue who this is, but he looks mean

Lovely course, but sadly the crowds were a bit sparse, but those that were there seemed happy

Expected Tamouridis to be up there as this really is his speciality and thought the belgian cross riders would like this as twisty course lots of sprinting out of corners

Could not find out much about either of the Norwegian teams though. very little info, very little in way of results apart from domestically and yet both are conti level teams (which is the higher level in this race) so they must have something to them

    Stage 1 Roundup

Well somebody won. The peloton started at a fairly easy pace, a group of about ten breakaway riders was established after about 20km. Then suddenly we found ourselves on the final climb of the day with somebody in the blue jersey (Zoltan Sipos, romanian nat champ) leading but suffering mechanical problems. Eventually after about 1km of struggling a mechanic spent 2 minutes changing his wheel. Then another km down the road changed his bike. Meanwhile at the finish line someone crossed the line to raptous applause, and everyone else appears to be scattered over about an hour up and down the mountainside.

This is all further confused by the fact there is an amatuer etape going on on the same road, and so its hard to tell who is in the race and who isnt.

Read this for the first time because a former colleague of mine is from the area and may I say this race preview is every bit as epic as the parcours. Panache in every snippet.

Another race where a good number of riders have a bit of previous ;D

Gabro is now the JTL of Eastern Europe. :)

There is confusion and controversy over the team time trial. With multiple withdrawals today many teams only have four riders left, in fact the Geiger team are now down to just two riders having had a dns, and 2 abandons.

Rumours that it will now be an individual time trial, or that teams may work together :fp
