Little stability in the table so far: leader Skidmark was 4th at the beginning of May, and Squire leaps from 16th to 3rd.  That is the biggest jump, but Fauniera's 5 place move within the top ten is notable, and Cordi is also a new face, just, in the top ten.

Year 1 Month 8/9 7th August to 30th September  (2 months together; I was rather busy with the Vuelta game at the beginning of Sept: I think I had intended doing a mid Sept update, but that didn't happen)

There were much bigger races in this period, but some decent scores accumulated.

SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro      226 points (Burgos GC win, with a stage win and 2nd, and 6th in l'Avenir) for 12 teams
VAN SCHIP Jan-Willem      211 (won Slam og Nord, 4th in Great War remembrance, 5th in Antwerp Port, 8th in Eurometropole etc)   for Comodoro, Karaev, Nathanptz
PHILIPSEN Jasper      207 (4th in Eurometropole, 8th in GP Impanis, Stage win and 2nd in Utah, and more)   21 teams
BALLERINI Davide      185   ( won Memorial Pantani and Trofeo Matteotti) for Madrazo

Year 1 Month 10/11 1st October to 18th November (and therefore effectively to the end of the season)  It didn't seem worth doing an end of October update if that left only a handful of November races to make a separate job out of.

JAKOBSEN Fabio      161 points (2 stage wins, 2 other podiums and the points win in Guangxi, 2nd in HammerHK) for 27 teams
    MADOUAS Valentin      134   (Paris-Bourges win, 5th in Paris-Tours) 10 teams
BALLERINI Davide      116   (3rd in Gran Piemonte, 7th in Italian TT nationals) for Madrazo

The only member of the previous top ten to move upwards is Kryvo, but the two teams above him in this period, Hugo K and Scrool, move up by 5 and 4 places respectively, Hugo appearing in the top ten.  Will the riders who have not yet lived up to expectation come through in the remaining two seasons, or is the basic shape of the table already established?

    Year 1  End of year

Those two managers who sought early season glory through Gonzalo Najar get their 142 points of comeupance, with popular picks Narvaez and Ganna getting 1 and 14 points respectively in the reallocation of honours in the Vuelta a San Juan.  Castrillo (6 teams) and Carretero (20 gain points from the disqualification of Igor Merino from his 8th place in the Spanish national ITT.  Blues in the Bottle has all 4 of those riders who will now feel they have a more just points haul.

So the slightly revised end of year standings, 1/3 of the way through in terms of time, although rather less than that for points, are:
    1   Karaev   4687
    2   Nathanptz   4590
    3   Comodoro   4504
    4   Kryvo   4480
    5   TheAsian   4425
    6   Ludwigzgz   4345
    7   Fauniera   4338
    8   HugoKoblet   4281
    9   Squire   4271
    10   Laarsland   4208
    11   Scrooll07   4184
    12   Skidmark   4163
    13   Cordi333   4142
    14   AlyKaptan   4093
    15   Hakkie2   3900

    17   Kazistuta   3844
    18   RoteLaterne   3734
    19   Flo   3701
    20   AmisVelo   3634

    30   Vladimir   2985
    31   LukasCPH   2607
    32   Leadbelly   1805
    33   NorthAmericanScum   1761
    34   Trudgin   1392
       CollectiveWisdom   4624

    Best possible team
    JAKOBSEN Fabio      777points   27 teams
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro      647   12
    MADOUAS Valentin      561   10
HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose      558   22
    BALLERINI Davide      508   1
    POGACAR Tadej      361   16
    PHILIPSEN Jasper      357   21
AGUIRRE CALPA Hernan Ricardo      347   4
NARVAEZ PRADO Jhonatan Manuel      314   26
    NOMMELA Aksel      310   2
    VAN SCHIP Jan-Willem      308   3
    JANSSENS Jimmy      290   0
    ARANBURU DEBA Alex      285   0

    DE GENDT Aimé      271   1
    HIRSCHI Marc      266   7
    DENZ Nico      262   0
    MÄDER Gino      255   0

    TOTAL

The Collective Ignorance Team (those we all missed out on, headed by Janssens, Aranburu, Nenz and Mader) would have 4946 points, and a healthy lead.  The actual leader, Karaev, has 67.4% of the 6950 possible.

Appart from Najar, with his retracted points, 3 selected riders remain pointless (DAL-CIN Matteo, GAZZOLI Michele and PEÑA MOLANO Wilson Estiben), and among those picked ten or more times without really justifying the hype (yet: they still have 2 years to prove their worth) are ALBANESE Vincenzo, VANHOUCKE Harm, OWEN Logan and RIVERA SERRANO Kevin.  At least Albanese has now reached the 200 career total, so his repeated popularity while underacheiving will not be repeated.

Hope this whets your appetite for the new edition, so long as you think you can hold concentration until the end of 2021: official launch should be before the end of the day/year.

Don't be surprised if the March update is slightly delayed: it will be the weekend of the first races in the Spring Classics game, so I might be a bit busy with that (watch our for news of it soon), but it should appear during that first week of March.

Here is the spreadsheet, but some columns are redundant or unupdated, because the first month each year requires slightly different calculation.

8 of the top ten at the end of January were in the top ten for February, so this was more a confirmation than a shake up.  The cream may have already risen. There is some significant change though, with Comodoro making the podium, Hugo Koblet (+3) and Squire (+2) moving up within the top ten, and Laarsland (+3) joining that elite.  Although they were 16th and 20th respectively this month, a congested lower-middle table gives Los Brolin and Monsieur Hulot the honour of biggest riser (+4).

    Year 2, month 4 1st to 28th April

JAKOBSEN Fabio      227 (Scheldeprijs win, stage win and 2 seconds in Turkey)   27 teams
POGACAR Tadej      197 (GC 6th and stage points in Itzulia, 6th in GP Indurain, top 20 in LBL)   16

    PRONSKIY Vadim      105   3
AGUIRRE CALPA Hernan Ricardo      99   4

ASGREEN Kasper      171   (National TT win and RR 2nd, stage points from Tour de Suisse) for Leadbelly and LukasCPH
POGACAR Tadej      165 (National TT win, 7th in RR, 4th in Tour of Slovenia, 7th in Lugano)   16 teams
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro      100   12

Evenepoel outscored them all, but he was only 17 when teams were submitted for this, so I guess not many of us knew of him.

For the 4th month in a row, Squire is the top scorer

1   Squire   1119 (Jakobsen, Philipsen, Pogacar, Bol, Ganna and Madouas)
2   Laarsland   1086  (Jakobsen, Philipsen, Pogacar, Sosa, Ganna and Madouas)

    Standings

If the leader keeps on being top scorer each month, that lead will only get bigger.  Hugo, Skidmark and Laarsland all move up a place within the top ten, and Kazistuta and Cordi join that elite.  Jon Ezeitza's 4 place move is the best of the month.

    Year 2, Month 8b-9  12 August to 29 September

One rider is key to any success this period, and quite probably the three year game, and just under half of the teams have him.
POGACAR Tadej      642 (3 stage wins, 2nd in points, and 3rd on GC in Vuelta, minor WC RR and MRTTT points)   16 teams
PHILIPSEN Jasper      247 (2nd in Fourmies, 3rd in Brussels Classic, Binckbank tour stage podiums) 21
HIRSCHI Marc      232  (3rd in San Sebastian, 5th in Binckbank Tour, 6th in Deutschland Tour)     7
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro      226 (GC and two stage wins in Vuelta a Burgos)    12
GANNA Filippo      202 (WCITT 3rd, stage win in Binckbank, 5th in Coppa Sabatini)    23
CHERKASOV Nicolay      201 (9th in Burgos and 4th in Almaty GCs, 3rd in both Coppa Agostini and Giro della Toscana) for Vladimir
VINGEGAARD RASMUSSEN Jonas      200 (2nd Danmark Rundt, 9th Deutschland Tour)   Lukas CPH
    JAKOBSEN Fabio      181   27
    KNOX James      146   14
    BJERG Mikkel      141   18
    RIABUSHENKO Aliaksandr      140   28

Hugo Koblet and Comodoro also move up, as those who were 2nd and 3rd each fall 3 places.  Vladimir's reward for perseverance (he had Cherkasov as a UP two years in a row) is the biggest jump mention (8 spots)

    Standings

With year 2 essentially over, Squire's lead is cut back somewhat, but the battle for the podium looks more interesting than that for the win.  Comodoro, Karaev and Nathan all move up, as do Laarsland and Alykaptan farther down the top ten.  Nathanptz is the only manager to have a 2 place rise anywhere in the table.

    Year 2, Months 11 & 12  28 October to 31 December

As expected, not much happening at this time of year.

RAILEANU Cristian came 2nd in the Tour of Sinkarak, getting 24 points for Trudgin
EYOB Metkel       picked up 13, mainly in the Tour of Fuzhou, for Leadbelly
and AGUIRRE CALPA Hernan Ricardo got 4 points for Karaev, Ludwigzgz, Monsieur Hulot and Rote Laterne for no effort, moving up the GC in Qinghai Lake when Monsalve got disqualified.

From those paltry points, only Ludwigzgz moved up a place, so the End or Year 2 Standings are:

    Rider Scores
Year 2 of the game was dominated by the rise of Tadej Pogacar, with two unselected riders who dominate the 2019-21 edition providing his best competition: there is no shame that Evenepoel was not thought of in early 2018, but maybe we should have expected someone to have noticed Higuita's early results.
POGACAR Tadej      1519 pts   16 teams
    EVENEPOEL Remco      952   0
HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres      914   0

    JAKOBSEN Fabio      781   27
    ASGREEN Kasper      757   2
    PHILIPSEN Jasper      755   21
    VLASOV Aleksandr      645   0

SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro      578   12
    BOL Cees      565   1
    MADOUAS Valentin      540   10
    HIRSCHI Marc      540   7

Across the two years, the best riders we could have had (but other than some sprinters, we did a poor job of picking them in any numbers)
POGACAR Tadej      1880 points   16 teams
    JAKOBSEN Fabio      1558   27
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro      1225   12
    PHILIPSEN Jasper      1112   21
    MADOUAS Valentin      1101   10
HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose      1046   22
HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres      1033   0
    ASGREEN Kasper      986   2
    EVENEPOEL Remco      952   0
    VLASOV Aleksandr      825   0

    HIRSCHI Marc      806   7
    BOL Cees      805   1
    BALLERINI Davide      760   1
    DE GENDT Aimé      701   1
    VELASCO Simone      671   1
    ARANBURU DEBA Alexander      638   0
    GANNA Filippo      626   23
    HARPER Chris      624   0
With perfect foresight, a manager could have scored 17349 so far: Squire has 66.7% of that

If we follow the pattern of the game in previous years, Year Three will comprise about 40% of the final totals: will that leave anyone with enough points to catch up a 580 point deficit?

Year Three of the game that is drawing to a conclusion saw the winners of two Grand Tours: I'm not sure that this cohort have it in them to match that, but there could be some big results appearing in the scores.

And while you are waiting to see the results of the 2017-19 edition (I don't think I'll have much time to do the analysis on Sunday or Monday), you can make a start on your 2020-22 selection.  There are 43 riders that we chose for this game who are still eligible for that one, if you really want to persevere with them.

    Year 3, Month 1 to 2nd February

Now is the time for riders to start to show what their standing will be in the sport.  We have seen some super results, but will we see superstars?

Top January (and early Feb) scorers:
GANNA Filippo      125pts (2nd in San Juan ITT and GC)   23 teams
PHILIPSEN Jasper      111 (stage points, and point classification win, in TDU)   21
FLOREZ LOPEZ Miguel Eduardo      95 (stage win and 5th on GC in San Juan) for Kazistuta
MCNULTY Brandon      91 (4th in San Juan and some stage points)   18
    MADOUAS Valentin      48   10
    ARMIRAIL Bruno      38   2
    PLANCKAERT Edward      32   5
    RIVERA SERRANO Kevin      24   20
HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose      23   22
    FABBRO Matteo      22   1

The scores in the game that is just starting its second year are more impressive for this month, mainly because Evenepoel and Moschetti were not on people's radar when this one started.  But Kazistuta getting the top 5 scorers of the month into his team is not to be sniffed at.

1   Kazistuta   504 (Ganna, Philipsen, Florez, McNulty, Madouas and Rivera)
2   Fauniera   432  (Ganna, Philipsen, McNulty, Madouas, Rivera and Hodeg)
3   Skidmark   428  (Ganna, Philipsen, McNulty, Plankaert and Rivera)
4   Squire   414  (Ganna, Philipsen, McNulty, Madouas and Rivera)

    Year 3, month 2 3rd Feb to 1st March

All about 1 rider this time around, who dominates the scoring, providing more than half the monthly points for all but 2 of those who picked him, and single handedly outscored every team (bar one) that didn't.

POGACAR Tadej      421 (2 stage wins and GC in Valenciana; stage win and 2nd and 2nd on GC in UAE)   16 teams
JAKOBSEN Fabio      156 (stage wins in Valenciana and Algarve, 4th in KBK)   27
ASGREEN Kasper      135   (KBK win) for Leadbelly and LukasCPH
    RAILEANU Cristian      88   Trudgin

Three place moves within the top ten wouldn't be expected this far into the game, but that is what Skidmark has managed. HugoKoblet, Laarsland and Alykaptan are also moving up in (or into) the top ten.  The middle of the table is more stable.

Year 3, month 3 and 4, and 5, at least    2nd March to 5th April (officially: effectively, 14 March or 31 May, depending on your perspective)

JAKOBSEN Fabio      80 (GP Jean-Pierre Monseré win)   27 teams
DE GENDT Aimé      48 (2nd in Le Samyn)   for NorhAmericanScum
ASGREEN Kasper      24 (3rd in Paris-Nice time trial and some GC points)   for Leadbelly and LukasCPH
BOL Cees      20 (minor stage points and finishing points in Paris-Nice) for Squire
PARET-PEINTRE Aurélien      18   (GC points from Paris Nice) for Armchair Cyclist and Laarsland
    WOUTERS Enzo      12   1
    MÄRKL Niklas      9   2
SOTO MARTINEZ Nelson Andres      7   3
    BALLERINI Davide      6   1
    ALLEGAERT Piet      5   1
    GODON Dorian      5   1
    BIERMANS Jenthe      5   1
    HAMILTON Chris      5   8
And that is everyone who scored from among those who were chosen

    2=   Armchair_Cyclist, Laarsland   98
    4=   Joelsim, Kryvo, Skidmark   92

       CollectiveWisdom   80
CollectiveIgnorance   234 (Mainly because Higuita scored 214)

    Standings
Our leader was the top scorer, even in this long period of few points.  Fauniera lacks Jakobsen, and so drops from 2nd to 4th, and the podium battle is very close.  Hugo and Skidmark are joined by Karaev in the "managed to climb a place" group.

Year 3 typically has about 40% of the game points: maybe not this year, but at least it didn't finish in March.

    Year 3 Months 4 to 7 15 March to 2 August

A large chunk of time, but this is really more restating that the races are on than major contributions to scores

POGACAR Tadej      134 pts (TT national win, RR National 2nd, 13th in Strade Bianche)   16 teams
BROZYNA Piotr      52 (5th on GC in Sibiu) for NAS
NOVAK Domen      49 (5th and 6th in national RR and TT)   for Jon Ezeitza
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro      31 pts   12 teams
BALLESTEROS CANOVAS Miguel Angel      31   1
    RODRIGUEZ MARTIN Cristian      25   9
    FOSS Tobias Svendsen      18   2
FLOREZ LOPEZ Miguel Eduardo      12   1
    SERRANO RODRIGUEZ Gonzalo      5   1
    CASTRILLO ZAPATER Jaime      5   6
    FABBRO Matteo      5   1
and that is all the scoring riders selected in our teams over nearly 5 months.

1=   Fauniera, Karaev   190 (Pogacar, Sosa and Rodriguez)
3=   AlyKaptan, Comodoro, Laarsland, Nathanptz   165 (Pogacar and Sosa)
    7=   Cordi333, HugoKoblet, RoteLaterne   159
    10=   Leadbelly, Vladimir   152
    12   Kazistuta   146
13   LosBrolin, LukasCPH, Skidmark, Squire   134

    Standings

Fauniera is the only manager to move up more than one spot, rising from 4th to 2nd, but Squire still has a considerable lead.  Comodoro also moves up a place among the top ten.

    Year 3, Month 8 3rd August to 6th September

The calendar is all over the place, but riders are very much back in the pattern of racing, and some doing so very impressively.

POGACAR Tadej      369 pts (12th in Milan-San Remo, 4th in Dauphine, and 2nd in Pts classification, stage win and 2nd in Tour)   16 teams
BALLERINI Davide      284 (Pologne stage win, 2nd in Nats, 6th in Euros, 2nd in Brussels Classic)   for Madrazo
EEKHOFF Nils      233 (2nd in Hageland, 2nd in Nats, 7th in Bretagne Classic)   for Monsieur Hulot
NARVAEZ PRADO Jhonatan Manuel      221 (top tens in Trittico Lombardia and Wallonie, stage win and podiums and GC win in Settimana)   26
    EENKHOORN Pascal      180   6
    PHILIPSEN Jasper      168   21
    DE GENDT Aimé      130   1
    ASGREEN Kasper      110   2
    CASTRILLO ZAPATER Jaime      103   6
    HIRSCHI Marc      100    7
    BOL Cees      95   1
    CONCI Nicola      87   8
    PETERS Nans      85   1
    GANNA Filippo      80   23

As a change from Evenepoel outscoring those who were actually chosen, Vlasov would have been eligible for this edition and outscored anyone who was picked.

1   Squire   1345 (Pogacar, Narvaez, Philipsen, Hirschi, Bol, Ganna)
2   Laarsland   1268  (Pogacar, Narvaez, Philipsen, Conci, Ganna)
3   Fauniera   1265  (Pogacar, Narvaez, Philipsen, Hirschi, Ganna)
4   HugoKoblet    1260  (Pogacar, Narvaez, Philipsen, Ganna)

The top three at the beginning of the month were first, third and fourth this time, and the one who interrupted them is now fourth.  That 2 place rise for Laarsland is beaten only by Cordi's 3 spot move to 6th, and Kazistuta appears in the top ten.

"What else will they manage before the end of this edition?" I wondered at the end of the last post here: only perhaps the most remarkable TdF time trial and a GC win; two podium positions in Liege-Bastogne-Liege, and a World Championships win (time trial) and podium (road race), and Giro stage and Pink jersey.  Not bad for youngsters...

POGACAR Tadej      1120 (2 more stage wins, KoM win and GC in the Tour de France, 3rd in L-B-Liege, 9th in Fleche)   16 teams
HIRSCHI Marc      726 (Stage win in Tour, Fleche win, LBL 2nd, World Champs bronze)    7
GANNA Filippo      406   (World TT gold, stages in Giro and Tirreno-Adriatico) 23
PHILIPSEN Jasper      157   (win and a 2nd in BinckBank stages) 21

    This month

Huge scores for those with the foresight.  Squire was the top scorer in two editions of this game in this period, a disappointing 2nd here.

The highest placed non-Pogacar manager is The Asian in 13th.

Squire has been top of the table since May last year, and it seems like there is only one real challenger at this stage.  Fauniera shares 11 of the Squire squad, and unless Ineos prioritise Sosa over Bernal, Carapaz, Froome and Thomas in La Vuelta, it's hard to see those 800 points being made up.

Check what has happened, and what still might, here.

That Collective Ignorance score for this session is largely composed of Almeida's 709 points from the Giro.

    Finalish Scores
subject to verification in the end of year data.

Very little change: HugoK had  a good month and a bit that mighthave reclaimed his podium spot had Cordi not been one of the few to outscore him.  Squire and Fauniera had unremarkable performances, but their top two places were really never in doubt.

And the game is in the status of a Tour de France with only the Paris parade remaining: we all know who to congratulate, but the award can't be made quite yet.

As with the other games, I will do some analysis when the final data is out, but until then, here is the spreadsheet.
