Scary experience for Dani Martinez #efd, who was attacked by an aggressive driver yesterday, and is in the hospital. The physical injuries don't appear to be too bad but he is suffering from amnesia :(

he did his first race again today and was up there until the final ascent of the Mur. Also Petilli is back in action in the Tour of the Alps at the moment after his heavy crash in Lombardia last year :cool

Terrible accident at San Sebastian, with 20 km to go, for both Egan Bernal and Mikel Landa.  :(

    https://twitter.com/TeamSky/status/1025778938386243584

Egan Bernal crashed out of contention in the closing stages of Clasica San Sebastian and has been taken to hospital for checks.

    Quote
Medical update: Egan suffered a serious facial trauma. He is awake and talking. He has had a precautionary scan to assess for further injuries which revealed a nasal fracture and maxillary injury.

He will be assessed by maxillofacial specialists and will be staying overnight for observation and further treatment.

What a mess and I almost believed for a moment that the peloton would just softpedal to the line. Another serious crash for Bernal while Landa might not make the Vuelta.

This seems to have been under-reported, unless I just missed it.

    Associated Press - Jul 31, 2018

MILAN — Vincenzo Nibali will return to training in a few days after undergoing back surgery following a crash in the Tour de France.

Nibali broke his 10th vertebra on the famous climb up to Alpe d’Huez on July 19 when a fan caught their camera strap on his handlebars.

The Bahrain Merida team says its 33-year-old rider “has undergone a successful surgery” at the La Madonnina clinic in Milan.

The statement on Tuesday adds that the operation “consisted of the injection of biocompatible cement into the body of the vertebra.”

Nibali will be released on Wednesday and can return to training on a static bike in a few days. He will then resume training on the road with an eye on the Spanish Vuelta, starting Aug. 25, as well as the World Championships road race on Sept. 30.

Nibali won the Tour de France in 2014 and the Giro d’Italia twice, in 2013 and 2016. He won the Vuelta in 2010.

I think you just missed it, but no prob, we can't keep up with everything! I would really like to see Nibali give us a couple more good GT's. Hope he makes it back up to that.

Cav takes extended / open ended break - still suffering from Epstein Barr virus:

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/cycling/45340482

Personally I hope there is a way back for the manx missile - but this really could be the beginning of the end?

Sentimentally I was hoping that he might get a kind of 'pay per ride' one year world tour deal for 2019 to give him another crack at TDF stages, before deciding if 2020 would be a road or Olympic track farewell... clearly he needs to be clear of this debilitating virus before assessing his next moves.

Kristina Vogels confirms that she is paralysed after a crash in training in June
This one hit home hard for me. :'(

Only seven months ago, she and Maximilian Levy were entertaining the press conference room at the Berlin Sixdays while we were waiting for the overall winners to get changed etc. and make their way over.
Relaxed, in 'civilian' clothes, joking with the journalists and each other, answering questions about the track Worlds, the German cycling federation, and the Tokyo Olympics. :(

But, having experienced her there and in competition, I think that she is on her way back up now. Going public with it this way, at a time of her own choosing, indicates that she has a good idea of what she wants, and gets good advice. There is still a long way ahead - but she is in control of her wheelchair.

Kristina's last name, Vogel, means bird.
The bird will fly again! :)

Yes me too - so thanks for your piece Lukas, and yes I hope you are right, I think she has incredible character, and just wish the best for her.  I hope the earlier appeal and German cycling have taken away short and medium term financial worries.

You can add me and my family to that list.
Becky and Kristina were the closest of rivals and the main protagonists in each other's biggest successes.
She is giving a press conference on Wednesday, I believe.
