Rosa has the advantage of having competed in the same time trial in 2014 already, when he finished 3rd behind Cataldo and Matteo Rabottini. It will still not be easy to keep Mollema behind though

my mistake, it's not the same time trial, just a kinda similar course

After some great results over the past year, #ccc Jan Tratnik took a convincing win in the time trial today, beating Diego Rosa by almost half a minute.

2nd for Roso was obviously enough to take the GC ahead of Bauke Mollema and Richard Carapaz

This particular Rosa is starting to look like blooming again. About time. Was he injured or was it the Sky Effect (or indeed the post-Astana Effect)? I forget.

      Giro dell'Appennino

      Sunday, April 22nd

On Sunday the Ciclismo Cup continues with the 79th edition of the Giro dell'Appennino - and after three years in the Regione Liguria, the race returns to its hometown Genova.

This obviously means we have a different, although still challenging profile this time:

It's more or less the same course as used until 2014, with a little uphill finish on the Via XX Settembre:

This could mean that we get to see a reduced group sprint like in 2014 (won by Colbrelli) or 2012 (won by Felline), but it the past also early attacks let to success, like in 2009 for example, when Nibali took the win solo.

The start list doesn't quite feature names of his caliber though...
      • #murias Euskadi - Murias
      • #bardiani Bardiani - CSF
      • #nippo Nippo - Vini Fantini - Europa Ovini
      • #androni Androni - Sidermec - Bottecchia
      • #wilier Wilier Triestina - Selle Italia
      • #ccc CCC Sprandi Polkowice
      • #delko Delko Marseille Provence KTM
      • #gazprom Gazprom-RusVelo
      • #biesse Biesse Carrera Gavardo
      • #damico d'Amico - Utensilnord
      • #ddc Dimension Data for Qhubeka
      • #sangemini Sangemini - MG.Kvis
      • #amore Amore & Vita - Prodir
      • #sovac Sovac - Natura4Ever
      • #felbermayr Team Felbermayr - Simplon Wels
      • #vorarlberg Team Vorarlberg Santic
      • #sauerland Team Sauerland NRW p/b SKS GERMANY
      • #astanacity Astana City
      • #mstina MsTina-Focus
      • #nca Project Nice Cote D'Azur
      • #teamit National Team Italy
...so there may be a chance for #nippo Cunego to take a final big win before retirement. It would be his 3rd one in this race.

There's no live coverage but highlights should be available on PMG Sport in the late afternoon[/list]

the final start list is available now. It doesn't look great at all to be honest, but with #bardiani Ciccone & Senni, #murias Bizkarra, #androni Ballerini & Masnada, #nippo Cunego, Canola & Santaromita or #sangemini Toto there are some guys on there that recently showed some decent shape at least . And #damico d'Amico seems to have signed the nephew of Paolo Bettini

no sprint today: #bardiani Giulio Ciccone, #ccc Amaro Antunes and #androni Fausto Masnada attacked with ~60k to go - never to come back in sight - and the Bardiani CSF rider finished off a fantastic week for him and the team with a nice victory on the streets of Genova.

#wilier Eduardo Zardini tried to bridge to the front on his own but was unable to, so it came down to a sprint for 4th, won by #androni Gavazzi ahead of his team mate Ballerini

as a new addition in June there's the Adriatica Ionica Race. It's a very ambitions project, organized by Moreno Argentin. Over a period of three years, it it supposed to grow into a 10 day race, starting in Venice, and finishing in Athens, visiting countries like Slovenia, Montenegro, Albania, Bosnia and Macedonia.

For the first edition the organizers "only" plan to visit Italy, Austria and Slovenia, but even that sounds very ambitious, and I guess it's better to be a bit cautious at first.

the race has found some pretty big sponsors (including Namedsport, also name sponsor of some of the RCS races), and it seems to take place, although for a start entirely on Italian soil, by the look of it. The race consists of five stages, including a TTT, dirt road, and a mountain top finish on the Passo Giau:

Tappa 1 – Mercoledì 20 giugno: Bim-Ciclabile del Piave – Lido di Jesolo, 23,3 km. Cronosquadre
Tappa 2 – Giovedì 21 giugno: Lido di Jesolo – Maser, 152,5 km. Difficoltà: ****
      Tappa 3 – Venerdì 22 giugno: Mussolente – Passo Giau, 158,3 km. Difficoltà: *****
Tappa 4 – Sabato 23 giugno: San Vito di Cadore – Grado, 229,2 km. Difficoltà: **
      Tappa 5 – Domenica 24 giugno: Grado – Trieste, 124,6 km. Difficoltà: ***

also the first participating teams have been confirmed already - and with five WT teams (Quickstep, UAE, Bahrain, Trek and Dimension Data) that list is looking pretty good

What a welcome addition to fill a little of the black hole in the calendar, between ToS and Le Tour.
Passo Giau? excellent. Sounds like a cracker.

I wonder where it will be in the calendar next year. There is an extra week between ToS and Le Tour this year so the race has obviously fitted into the slot created by that. Next year will they leave it there and have a clash with most of the TT and RR national championships.

Looking at the regions mentioned on the stage profiles, it is only in Italy this year.
Going to Austria must have been the original plan that was scrapped for some reason.

With that in mind, I'm not holding my breath just yet for a nine-country, week-long stage race down the "Serenissima Routes".
The race could end up being just as long-lived as the Giro di Padania. ;)

that seems to be right, yeah. They really should have made that little detour through Slovenia then at least ;)

There's a good competition for the sprints on there with guys like #quickstep Viviani, #trek Nizzolo, #uae Consonni, #teamit Trentin & Minali, #dimension Cavendish, #roompot Wippert and so on, but unfortunately not many climbers.

the first two days weren't of too much interest with Quick Step taking the TTT and the sprint with Viviani, but today's stages saw #androni Sosa taking another step up and destroying his opposition on the Passo Giau

the Cup has finished last week (with the autumn races, discussed here), and these are the final results of the 2018 Ciclismo Cup:

      Pos. Gruppo Sportivo Punti
      1      #androni   Androni-Sidermec       854
      2      #bahrain   Bahrain Merida       733
      3      #bardiani   Bardiani Csf       576
      4      #nippo   Nippo-Vini Fantini       521
      5      #wilier   Wilier Triestina-Selle Italia       352
      6      #uae   Uae Emirates       326

      Pos. Nome Punti
      1      #bahrain   POZZOVIVO Domenico       237
      2      #androni   BALLERINI Davide       205
      3      #bardiani   CICCONE Giulio       173
      4      #nippo   CANOLA Marco       153
      5      #bahrain   VISCONTI Giovanni       150
      6      #bahrain   COLBRELLI Sonny       140
      7      #androni   GAVAZZI Francesco       130
            #sky   MOSCON Gianni       130
      9      #quickstep   VIVIANI Elia       128
      10      #androni   BELLETTI Manuel       109

So Androni won it with relative ease, securing a wild card for the 2019 Giro d'Italia again.

Without Ballerini and Sosa it could be more difficult to defend that position next year though, also because the other teams are likely to become more competitive. Moser could turn into a good addition for #nippo Nippo, #wilier Wilier is rumored to significantly strengthen the team with big names (among them Visconti), and also the young #bardiani Bardiani guys are showing signs of improvement.
