After a bonkers 2017 season for #w52, some foreign team had to take a chance on one of their chancers. After all, a 26-year old from the comic book *pt scene with no palmarès who suddenly challenges WT GC guys deserves a shot in greener pastures right?

Amaro Antunes wrote his claim in bold type last year and in February he donned one of the boldest jerseys in the peloton as #ccc's only rider from south of the Dunaj. To be fair, it's taken him a few months to adjust but he's building up steam now and, at the very least, CCC will surely be getting an invitation to the Volta.

Double coup for Henrik Evensen of #joker. He was the overnight leader in the Ronde de l'Oise but clearly fancied another stage win. Best result in a very patchy career so far for this 23-year old.

    :lol

I checked to see if this race finishes on one of the Limburg climbs. It doesn't.
Yes, there is a bit of an uphill kick at the end, but it's only 25 altitude metres from the flamme rouge to the finish.

Is Bouhanni past his zenith if he can't win a sprint against CXers who are at the same point in their seasons as a roadie is in February? :shh

It is unusual that he wins races, he is more the kind of rider to be on the winning team. He's a very tall guy and the windshadow behind him helped Kristoffer Halvorsen to win the U-23 worlds in Doha.

Sam Bennett  #bora wins the Rund Um Köln. Excellent 2nd for Mikhel Raim #academy. Marcel Kittel  #katusha finished down in fifth, which isn’t a particularly brilliant indication of Tour de France form. Apparently Bora went nuts on the small climbs, breaking up the race and dropping Kittel. He got back, but it took something out of him because when Bennett accelerated off his wheel and overtook him, he sat up as soon he knew he wasn’t winning.

I was thinking the other day, what is this Route d'Occitanie? And of course it is the Route du Sud, rebadged probably to acknowledge some governmental source of funding.

And it's a pretty neat stage race, a romp around Cathar country with something for everyone except TT lovers and who cares about them?

On Stage 1, we had a bunch gallop won by Bouhanni #cofidis which was remarkable only for the fact that he sprinted separately from teammate - and dare we say rival? - Laporte, who finished second ahead of Le Coq Fautif.

Another lumpy day on Stage 2 ended with another sprint, this time won by pint-sized CXer Venturini of #ag2r. Boubou came second but in placing higher than Laporte (4th) he probably thought he had won on points, without really achieving a technical knockout.

Stage 3 was a solid MTF and Valverde #movistar had clearly pencilled it in as the stage where he would remind us that he was back racing for the first time since his rather disappointing LBL, which left Navarro wondering just what it would take for him to finally get a win.

As if Valverde hadn't done enough already, he decided to ride off on the final Stage 4 with frequent training buddy Sanchez #astana and rack up another memorable performance. Thankfully the peloton didn't give up and caught the pair within sight of the finish. Valverde still managed to finish second behind Roux of #fdj, who hadn't won anything since 2015.

Lafay and Courteille had been part of the day's break. Zoidl caught them on the Telegraphe and they just about hung onto his coat tails for the rest of the climb, but the Austrian didn't like the sketchy descent afterwards and so was unable to contest for the stage win.

He missed out the stage win as well in the day's second stage, but did enough to take over the leader's jersey from Bouet.

Another tough stage today. It goes over very similar territory to stage 11 at this year's TdF.

Schelling had a bad first stage and hence why, despite his two stage wins, he's still only in 8th in the GC.

He's done well at his current level but ... it's a bit the same with Fortin as the sprinter on that team. They're at their peak now and pulling off some good results but meanwhile there's so much young talent coming through ...

yeah... Schelling is another example. Winner of two stages in this race, but probably with next to zero chances of ever returning to WT

I dunno. The list of teams I initially posted was just a copy and paste of the "invited" teams from the Rumours/Wildcards thread. Maybe they just never accepted or it could be money related or who knows what.

Those are possible explanations - but it's hard to understand why an Iberian ProConti team would not jump at the chance to do a 10-day stage race shortly before the Vuelta, their season highlight.

When I first started racing, I was living in Arizona. We would ride in temps over 100 F. But with plenty of water - and we'd be crusted with salt when we were done. And we weren't racing, per se. Those were rides - not races. I don't know what the humidity is right now in Portugal - that has a huge impact on what is doable, and what is not. I'm thinking it might be more humane to cancel the entire race.

Well they have listened a bit and have changed tomorrow's stage at least. However some of the comments on social media have been saying the changes needed to be on these sprint days on the roasting plains of Alentejo and not on the Queen stage.

The other four just let Alarcon roll off the front of the group on a descent and then looked at each other. Not the smartest.

I had a bit of fun last year seeing who was the best of the rest if we excluded the Latin-Europeans. The pasty white jersey if you will. Although we've only been over a few hills the field of potential winners is much reduced.

    Realistically we're left with:

    *no Hagen
    *se Gebremedhin
    *au Earle
    *au Ewart

If it was just a one-off bad day then Stussi might still be in with a chance, but it's unlikely.
