I had a bit of fun last year seeing who was the best of the rest if we excluded the Latin-Europeans. The pasty white jersey if you will. Although we've only been over a few hills the field of potential winners is much reduced.

Realistically we're left with:

*no Hagen
*se Gebremedhin
*au Earle
*au Ewart

Yesterday's results, as they are currently shown, would have you thinking the competition is already over, but Earle had a bike change in the last few km after a crash and finished with roughly the same time as Hagen.

Hagen stumbled at the last mountainous hurdle to hand the pasty white jersey to Earle. Nevertheless it's been a good showing from the big man.

GP Ouest France at Plouay yesterday and deluge conditions brought the best out of the one-day specialists with a podium that sums up the quality of this generation.

Naesen has won before, of course, in 2016 and he's the first repeat winner here since 1977. Wellens didn't seriously contest the sprint and knew he couldn't win but agreed to keep working anyway, which showed character for him, while I thought Valgren might have tested Naesen a bit more than he did. Perhaps it was because the Belgian went from a long, long way out.

Fab race by all accounts. Sad I missed the coverage.

Coming up: the Uno-X development weekend in the Lillehammer/Hamar area of Norway. Not one, not two but three new UCI 1.2 races brought to us on the wings of Uno-x, sponsoring almost everything in Norway this year...

The concept is a race weekend with one-day races rather than a stage race, a bit similar to the danish races in the spring and maybe (at a higher level) the Mallorca races for the pros.

Three races: time schedule (website for updates)
Friday, August 31st, Hafjell Grand Prix, UCI 1.2 ITT
Saturday, September 1st, Lillhammer Gran Prix, UCI 1.2 Road race
Saturday, September 2nd, Gylne Gutuer, UCI 1.2 Road race

There aren't many ITT standalone races on the calendar, so the Hafjell GP is probably a welcome addition for those that want to improve against the clock.
The Lillehammer grand prix is a typical norwegian hilly race (the Tour of Norway and the National Championships have been frequent guests in the same are before...)
Gylne Gutuer is a road race with gravel sectors, the most famous known as Truls Korsæths (now #astana) corner!

     :angry how dare you!

For the time trial on Friday (Hafjell GP) there are some obscure norwegians I will be watching:
    35 #joker Iver Knotten
151 Eirik Øverland Vevatne - was good for #fixit last year, raced for obscure east european outfit this year, no idea what shape he is in.
     :slow
184 Anders Oddli - he is the only Norwegian decent on the track so could do well on a flat ITT as well?

    and the less obscure ones
    91 #unox ANDERSEN, Idar
    92 #unox FOSS, Tobias S

(pS: What happened to #virtu Virtu, is it just renaming? )

... and what is #coop up to this weekend? not invited?

It wouldn't be a Scandinavian race without some friendly, good-natured rivalry. :D

    35 #joker Iver Knotten
    92 #unox FOSS, Tobias S
These two are on my list as well. But there's no way they will even be close to #rainbow Bjerg & #champdk Toft. :P

(pS: What happened to #virtu Virtu, is it just renaming? )
Pretty much. Got a new title sponsor just before the Tour of Denmark, re-named the team, got new kit ...
... actually, they didn't get new kit. They just got stickers to put on the old kit! :o

I've never seen that in cycling before, and I've seen quite a bit. :lol

The official explanation would probably be that the deal was agreed with so little time to go to the race that it was simply impossible to get new kit in time.
I disagree: Sportful produce in Italy, I think. Send the new design via e-mail, they produce it the next day while someone drives down there, picks it up, and is back in Denmark three days at most after the agreement was reached. Etxe Ondo did a same-day delivery for Dumoulin (but that was just down the road, and they already had the design).
I think it was simply bad management - where there's a will, there's a way. But nobody felt responsible for making this happen. :fp

This, along with the short-term nature of the sponsorship deal (only until the end of the year), makes me think that Riis's project is not exactly headed for future greatness.

... and what is #coop up to this weekend? not invited?
That is weird. And today Fredrik Ludvigsson announced that he wouldn't continue with the team as they aren't compatible personally ...
Strange. And a bit worrying - Stavanger needs its UCI team!

    GP Lillehammer
I watched the final 10 km on a netcast and it was very nervous, tactical small-group racing.

The commentary actually announced Rasmus Guldhammer as the winner, and if you know just a little bit about Nordic languages, you can glimpse from the name of the town, the name of the race and the cyclists name that he was born for this. I was going to write that the theme of Carl Fredrik Hagen loosing to Guldhammer was getting boring in these parts as they have contested every uphill finish in the regional races at this level before.

However, looking at the results list it seems he was confused with teammate Alexander Kamp, smashing my well-prepared little pun.   :angry The game was to guess how many attacks #riwal CA Sørensen would reel in, and when he was out of power, #joker CF Hagen attacked on narrow/steep part of final climb, just to be easily outgunned by the stronger #waaoooo Waooo rider who was on his tail.

Final race.. Gylne Gutuer "gold streets", the Norse equivalent of the Strade Bianche - racing through some of Norway's best farmland where unusually large and prosperous farms were established long before the Vikings. Note that of the total length of 165.1 km, roughly 50 km is on gravel. I think that is more than the Italian source of inspiration for this race?

must make a gravel race list....new thread!  :cool

By the way, it was a great race watching, much better than the vuelta stage and Jasper Philipsen should graduate to WT ( #quickstep or #lotto?)  someday soon...great classics riding with smooth tactics where the norwegians and danes were shooting each other down for 50 km , Philpsen just waited for the decisive moves and followed.

The only difference that I can see from last year's stages is the addition of a kicker (3.2km at 8%) at the end of stage 5. GC should be decided there.

Start list is available here. No sign of Mirsamad.

Interesting that they overlap with the Tour of Almaty. Didn't do that last year.

Is it deliberate, or just nobody caring to check for stuff like this?

Kippers obviously likes it in the Middle East, but would have preferred a more uphill finish. That could be tomorrow.

Three stage wins for the home riders, but the best that they could do in the final GC was 7th. It was a similar story last year.
