Maybe ASO could change to more teams. Even with 25 teams it's only 200 starters against the old 22 x 9. I thought Direct Energie and Fortuneo were good and valuable teams. Fortuneo clearly were about the mountains and Barguil had great support there.

Impossible, because the new UCI rule is 175 riders per race/176 for GTs.

    More #cofidis naffness, then.

Hiring Belgians is important for the sponsor but they go there and do nothing. OK, so COF can't afford big names but let us quiz ourselves which of these has done anything worthy of note while on the team: Claeys, Van Lerberghe, Vanbilsen, Van Staeyen, Van Genechten, Verhelst ...

It's a really interesting move from both sides of the contract. #direct has to back him with more than just Gaudin and Petit and it must handle the cultural change in bringing a name of this quality, while Terpstra will probably get absolute leadership in every race he starts before May.

I remember a commentator who was a former DS saying earlier this year that Terpstra was totally consistent in his training and nutrition, a really professional guy, but that he still had seasons where he just couldn't get it together at all in races and that was why Lefevere would never give him carte blanche. He might be due another of those seasons but let's hope not.

I really wouldn't have expected him to sign for them. I mean, leaving Quickstep was for monetary reasons - if Lefevere had found another sponsor, he would have stayed. And then he ends up at #direct Direct Energie?!

I can understand that if there is a financial squeeze at Quickstep then of the big names Terpstra being the oldest (with the exception of Gilbert) why they would let him go. What has caught me by complete surprise is where he has ended up. No way I would have picked him to go to Direct Energie.

Wouter Wippert, Floris Gerts and Coen Vermeltfoort are all set to leave #roompot Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij after the end of the season. For 2019 the team is also in talks with foreign riders, for the first time.

Wippert and Gerts both just stepped down from WT, and haven't had the best season, to say so. Maybe they are lucky and get a job at CCC, but I can't see too many teams that will be interested

I have mixed feelings about these two. Flashes of excellence and Ion in particular is a consistent earner of points but it seemed like #bahrain was his one chance to grab a marquee leadership opportunity and, while he probably justified the potential in the first year of the contract, he hasn't quite converted it this season. It's a bit the same with Gorka, really. You get the sense that you're not really hiring a winner, just a really good one-week stage racer.

The problem that Bahrain currently has is that it is actually performing like the Izagirres themselves: lots of placings but not really any quality wins. The question of value for money is therefore an important one.

Wouter Wippert, Floris Gerts and Coen Vermeltfoort are all set to leave #roompot Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij after the end of the season. For 2019 the team is also in talks with foreign riders, for the first time.

Gerts and Wippert would both make good CT-level riders but, on the evidence of their last two seasons, not much more. There's a pretty decent CT scene in NL if they can handle the pay cut.

yeah, it was more of a general statement.

According to de Telegraaf, Dumoulin has handed over a wish list to #sunweb Sunweb btw, consisting of George Bennett, Emanuel Buchmann, Patrick Konrad, Ben O'Connor and Sebastien Reichenbach.

Most of them aren't available anyway though

It's like Aldag is forever trying to put together the #htc glory days with ever diminishing returns. :)

Hope #didata does better next year because it really needs to get some results instead of providing safe harbour for has-beens.

Valgren and, to some extent, Kreuziger are big signings. Valgren is a massive coup but the Czech went pretty quiet in terms of results after his CAS ruling. Not sure if Vermote is staying. Wyss is a reliable climbing dom to bring in but if Meintjes doesn't improve soon the Swiss will have nobody to dom for.

#epm Rodrigo Contreras --> #astana Astana Pro Team

he couldn't quite live up to the expectations when he joined #quickstep Quickstep as a neo-pro (and terminated his contract to return home after a year), but now gets a second chance in WT after some strong showings in Colombia

He found life very difficult in Flanders. He had a very rural background iirc, and struggled with the culture shock and the weather. His roommate Gaviria seemed to adapt a lot better and the training suited him better.

    11 departures for Bahrain:

    Visconti (Wilier rumoured)
    Siutsou
    Boaro (Astana)
    Bonifazio
Izagirre brothers (UAE or Astana rumoured)
    Navardauskas
    Per
    Pellizotti (retirement)
    Bozic (retirement)

+ the unmentioned Gaspa to DD (though that's not official yet)

He talks about a team of 24, so "if you make the calculation" of 7 transfers + the renewals + folk already with a 2019 contract, you'll see that as it stands they won't be making any incoming transfers.

a bit harsh on Sivtsov. If he recovers from his injuries, he could still be a very good mountain dom I'd think - and Bahrain seems to be losing most of those anyway
