I spoke to Thwaites a couple of days ago. He has just had his place on the 8 man GB Olympic Podium road squad confirmed for another year, and returned from a training camp with prospective  GB riders for the 2019 Road Worlds. Bizarrely, he has no offers from any of the 43 teams in the top 2 divisions. That’s around 950 contracts, half of which will have been concluded in the last 6 months.
He seemed to recognise and accept that the very high levels of nationalism in the pro peloton meant that British domestiques, even those with strong performances at the sharp end of the Classics were somewhere between back of the queue and not in the queue.
There have been very substantial investments in UK sport over the last 15 years, of which cycling has been a major beneficiary. This has allowed the development of programs from talent identification through to elite performance and in turn, significant improvements in performance across all professional levels are evident. However, in no way is this reflected in the number of British pros in the top 2 divisions, where  riders only hold 4% of World Tour and 0.4% of Pro Conti contracts. In the current environment, until such time as genuinely British sponsors are found to fund British WT or PC teams, who exhibit similar nationalistic tendencies to the vast majority of the 43 WT and PC teams, then British pros, particularly domestiques, will suffer from what it says on their passport and continue to miss out on the opportunity to ride at the higher levels, even though their performances may merit it.

he found a team in the end:

    Finally! :D

    CQranking lists 143 Continental teams - wait and see if and when the 30 'extra' ones get on the UCI website. :shh

    I compared the two lists:
    - the UCI has 14 teams that aren't on CQranking's list yet
    - CQranking has 45 teams that don't show up (yet) with the UCI

    The teams listed by CQranking, but not the UCI, include a.o. Arapahoe Resources-BMC (ex-Holowesko ProConti), Floyd's Pro Cycling, Metec-TKH, P&S Thüringen, Salcano Sakarya BB, Sangemini Trevigiani-MG.K Vis, Sporting/Tavira, Team Lotto-Kern Haus, Team Sapura Cycling, Team Wiggins Le Col, and Tirol Cycling Team.

    I think that many are simply still in the 'get all paperwork from team via national federation to UCI and have the UCI staff put it into the correct forms' stage and expect most, if not all, of them to be added in the coming days.

    They need to be quick. San Juan starts in a few days......in fact don't they have previous on this? Something stirring in the back of my mind says Noce missed out on riding for the Italian Nat team at San Juan due to a lack of paperwork from Sporting/Portuguese federation or summat.

    They made it! :D
    On the list as of today.

    The UCI list has grown to 133 Conti teams by now, with Sporting/Tavira and Team Wiggins Le Col just two among the (so far) 20 latecomers.
    The CQranking list is at 150 now, so there are still several left to register.

    a bit of an odd transfer, especially looking at some other announcements this week, seeing strong Italian riders stranded at continental level:

    #sangemini Nicola Gaffurini --> #monkeytown Monkey Town - à Bloc CT
    #nippo Marco Tizza --> #amore Amore e Vita - Prodir

    My guess is that they couldn't find the rich uncle personal sponsor that Rumac had. ;)

    interesting that they [#elkov Elkov] mention the importance of the points in there. I wasn't aware of those "automatic invitations" tbh

    http://www.hkcycling.cz/novinky/clanek/326

    Yep, .2 only in Europe. Still, this means they can pick and choose between all .2 races.

    A clever team manager would now try to get into .1 races ... and if that doesn't work, they can still pick up the auto-invite for a .2 race that's held in the same week. :shh

    For [.2] events taking place between 16th March and 31st December, the organiser must invite the 3 first UCI continental teams in the rolling classification by team for the relevant continental circuit, on the second Sunday of January (based on new team rosters)

    The new Europe Tour rankings were released yesterday, and by the look of it, Elkov made it:

    17. #evopro EvoPro Racing (EVO) 1288.25pt
    18. #elkov ELKOV - AUTHOR (ELA) 1219.71pt
    19. #tarteletto TARTELETTO - ISOREX (TIS) 1204.0pt

    20. #leopard LEOPARD PRO CYCLING (LPC) 1181.0pt

    https://dataride.uci.ch/Results/iframe/RankingDetails/20?disciplineId=10&groupId=10&momentId=37502&disciplineSeasonId=132&rankingTypeId=2&categoryId=22&raceTypeId=0

    Without those 39 points from Schlegel (who was a late signing) they would have ended up behind Leopard though.
