[2.2] Tour of Antalya
« on: February 13, 2018, 17:11 »
Tour of Antalya 22nd - 25th February

Stage 1: Korkuteli 158.6km

Stage 2: Kemer 121.3km

18.7km at 6.3%

Stage 3: Feslikan 32.5km

(4.6km at 7.6%) + (7.6km at 8.6%)

Stage 4: Side - Lara 146.2km

This is what the race website has as the stages, but other sources including it's twitter account have the stages in a different order and of differing lengths (stage 3 is alternatively just 14km of climbing for example). I don't suppose Fus that Baku have got their hands on a road book yet for confirmation of the stages?

seems like #torku Raileanu won the mountain jersey in the "Kuzey Kıbrıs" Tour of North Cyprus this week. So better watch out!

You stole my thunder! :angry :P

But, yes, a few of the teams (Torku, Monkey Town, Tirol, Astana Motors) that will be competing in Antalya have already got some race miles in their legs at the North Cyprus Cycling Tour.

Stage wins went to Jon Bozic, Onur Balkan and Dusan Rajovic. The overall went to Bozic as well.

Also happening this weekend is the UCI rated Grand Prix Alanya which will contain a lot more of the participating teams and should give us some idea of their early season form.

The team writes in a press release that the race organizers have assessed their sports quality as being high enough for the race, but the team should run as national team due to the UCI ranking of the race.

"It means very much for a team like us to get such a run. It is a huge race for a Danish DCU team. It is not normal for us to get such invitations. Now it's about us to come out and show us. :D
I remember when Søren Petersen and his merry journeymen would race then-1.HC Philly as a Danish national team ... Compared to that, this is almost normal.

They (the organisers) are wrong about making them race as a Danish national team, though - a 2.2 may very well invite foreign non-UCI-registered teams (and 2.2 races do it all the time). Of course, not every race organiser need necessarily know that. :shh

In other news, #baku Kirill Pozdnyakov won the 1.2 GP Alanya today. :)

Kirill Pozdnyakov wins Grand Prix Alanya

(February 18, 2018) Kirill Pozdnyakov put in one of his trademark breakaways to win the Grand Prix Alanya in Turkey. It was his and the team’s first win of the 2018 season and the earliest win of a season for the team ever.

Pozdnyakov, Oleksandr Polivoda and Elgun Alizada were in the large break of the day in the 175-kilometre race that featured several climbs. Originally 36 riders, the break had gotten smaller as the riders got to the last climb of the day. On that final climb, Pozdnyakov took off from the group in a solo effort with just over 30 km to go. Polivoda was in the group of 11 behind him, and the Ukrainian controlled things, allowing his teammate to stay untouched. The teamwork was successful and Pozdnyakov soloed in to victory, with Polivoda finishing fourth on the day.

“I am very happy! It was a great start of the season, big thanks to my teammates. Everybody was super today, the guys did all the work until the last climb. I only needed to finish it off and I did. I attacked on the last climb and could stay away,” Pozdnyakov said. “Big thanks to Polivoda, who controlled the chasing group and brought me in a comfortable situation until the final. Team spirit was the key point today!”

“What can I say after the first victory in this season – it was great. It was a very intense race and we knew there would be lots of attacks from the start. Our goal was to get in the main breakaway which would decide the race, so our guys had to cover all the dangerous attacks in the first half of race. After 60 km a break of 36 riders formed, with Kirill, Oleksandr and Elgun in it,” said sports director Eldar Dzhabrailov.

“It was a very strong group, and Elgun and Polivoda did a lot of work. There were many attacks, and on the second of the three climbs, there were only 12 riders left including not only Kirill and Polivoda, but also such strong teams as Torku, CCC and Minsk. The only solution was to attack on the third climb, and Kirill did it in style.

“The last 30km were the most exciting in this race, as the leader was going and the pack started working hard to catch up with Kirill. They came within 20 seconds, and the last thing I told Kirill was ‘don’t give up,’ and he didn’t. Polivoda tried the whole time to keep control of this group so that they wouldn’t catch him. Kirill’s spirit was strong and he won a beautiful victory for the whole team.”

Pozdnyakov + the thirteen chasers will all be at Antalya. In fact you have to go down to 19th position to find the first non-attendee. We can't draw too much from the result, but it is a bit of a wake up call to the teams to stay attentive on the first two days.

Road book is out and the stages are as initially posted. Stage 3 isn't a TT as I initially thought, but just a very short stage - Mount Fuji style-ish.

Stage 4 should be a cake walk for Popeye, but I'm not sure about stage one. It could end up being played out in a similar fashion to Sunday's race.

Names for the sprints: Franczak, Mareczko, Bazhkou, Papok, Fortin, Gessner (but has been ill), Balkan, Page, Looij, Gazzoli, Orken and probably a few I have no idea about.

It doesn't look like they are quite getting the sunny weather they want so as to promote the area as a winter training camp destination.

I was gonna give a link to the Ivan Basso daily blog here, but it refuses to be google translated. It won't even allow you to copy the text (or even right click) for copyright reasons....

Matteo got a triumph marked by difficulties, as the Italian rider, in the longest stage of this lap, suffered a fall to 40 km of goal that forced him not only to change bike, but also slippers, to break a creek in the impact.

"In the end we were Michele Gazzoli and I, but at 1,500 meters there has been a fall and Michele has broken the change. I was left alone, I finished in the top 10 in the last corner and when they were preparing the sprint for Mareczko, I decided to throw it and I got it. "

    Probably not, no.

What strikes me as strange is that the Basso blog 'backend' (and so likely the webmaster, too) is in French.
Italian would be logical, Spanish would be obvious too ... but French? :S

Names for the climbs: Koshevoy, Pozdnyakov, Zoidl, Raileanu, De Jonghe, Ruijgh, Pronskiy, Brkic, Kipkemboi (though he didn't do well at the ACC on Sunday and then had a long flight afterwards), Budyak "and probably a few I have no idea about".

The climb tops out with ~50km to go, so there is potentially time for people to get back.

    Raileanu leading.

Now joined by the chasing five. Zardini (no longer Zardiani) is one of the them and since Habtom won the KoM there's a fair chance he's one of the others (unless he can't descend for toffee).

I don't think these names were correct. It must have been Krizek instead of Lehne(r) and Kleiman replacing Silk (sic). Too much of a coincidence that the top three of the stage were the three teams represented in the break, but with different riders.

The whole race seems to be, well, not as well-organised as one would hope for. :shh

He had a puncture 1 km from the top of the climb, but the neutral service car that he was told to wait for never came. Eventually picked up by the broomwagon.

Come on, one negative incident does not constitute the whole race, unless there are other stories we haven't heard. We don't know the full details on Pena yet (Who told him to wait? Where was he in relation to the leaders/laughing group?), but there seems to have been a communication breakdown somewhere.

As to the people in the break, I actually now think they were correct and there was no mistake. Coincidences do happen. The remains of the break must have been caught (just?) before the top of the climb as the KoM points went to Habtom, Zardini, Brkic, Schinnagel and Raileanu in that order. The six that then got away must just must have been good descenders and it was a coincidence that the same teams were involved.

Advantage anyway to Raileanu for tomorrow's finish and the GC, but that order of riders going over the climb today suggests he might not get it all his own way. Just 49 seconds minus bonuses to make up.
