The race will be taking place on Saturday 24th February and will once again take off from Guilherand-Granges. The 2018 edition will also be marked by the installation of a new course that will allow riders, spectators and viewers to discover new routes and once again attend a lively and exciting race day.

The elements that contributed to the success of previous races will however remain on the program with the hills of Cornas and the ascent of Val d'enfer whose summit will be located less than 5 km from the finish.

Cracking pair of races these two. Keep saying it, but parcours that really promote racing in the French style: aggressive and tactical.

My dreams have been shattered, there is no actual person called Bernard Drome after whom the race is named.

Sorry about that. Industrial chicken and the Drôme region. The region, at least, is very nice. Although, not unlike the industrial chicken, we don't get to see the best quality bits of the region here.

The upper reaches of the Drôme Valley are perhaps my favourite spot in France.
Any excuse for some stock photos. :D

The finale features the valley of hell (Val d' Enfer) so it should be hot enough then.  :)

Hard to follow the race too closely with HN going on at the same time, but Bardet attacked 3 cols from home.
Tanel Kangert tried to chase but ultimately the race was in bits on the final climb, with Ag2r's leader free and clear.

I tuned in with about 40km remaining. At that point Cavagna was out front on his own with two and a half minutes on a reduced peloton of ~40 riders. He held that lead for a bit but it came down dramatically on col de la Grande Limite and he was caught.

There was an attack with about 20km left and Jungels Narvaez  #quickstep and Calmejane #direct got away and their lead fairly quickly went up to 40 seconds, on the penultimate climb a trio with Bardet #ag2r and Vichot #groupama working but Hivert #direct sitting on did reduce the gap slightly but ultimately it came to nothing.

This meant that the riders in the lead would battle it out, with about a kilometer to go Calmejane attacked as the road went up, Jungels was dropped immediately and despite Narvaez's best efforts to stay with him and then get back he couldn't meaning the Frenchman was the winner.

A note on QS tactics, Jungels was the one who worked most as he felt Narvaez was stronger, at one point Jungels briefly dropped Calmejane on one of the climbs and said that he actually felt stronger at the end than expected so maybe it was a mistake.[1]

More reaction is here (in French)
