Record Bank E3 Harelbeke
« on: March 23, 2018, 09:47 »
Just as Flanders Classics has eaten up Belgium's biggest one day races, so too has a certain multinational financial institution eaten up Belgium's tiddler banks. So it's entirely fitting that Record Bank, as the recent victim of a consolidation buyout, backs KWC Hand in Hand in a rearguard action against the corporatisation of the Flemish Spring.

It isn't easy to find a map of the parcours but this one from Wikipedia appears to be current:

On paper, it's very much a case of the usual suspects except that neither Sagan nor Van Avermaet have really shown their one-day form so far this season. We should also expect to see Naesen, Trentin, Benoot, Valgren, Lutsenko, Stuyven, Kristoff, Degenkolb, Colbrelli, Vanmarcke, Modolo and Moscon in the mix, and probably most of the QuickStep contingent.

So much for the favourites but fans of Where's Wally will also be looking for odd ones out Landa, Gonçalves and to some extent Gallopin, all of whom are rare birds indeed in these parts.

Good ratings there. We are still waiting, seemingly forever, for Démare to discover himself as a serious contender in these races.

yeah, he tends to be very "unlucky". There's always some kind of mechanical to be expected in the crucial moments of a cobbled race ;)

Personally I'm not too sure if Sagan and van Avermaet are really in top top shape yet, but they'll probably in the mix anyway, and deserve a high rating nonetheless, yeah. Benoot seems to be eager to get a result today. Vanmarcke as well. Would be great to see them on the top of the podium

In a sideways takeoff on this discussion, it's in the news that Landa will be here, as you know. AND, what caught my attention is that Nibali will be at the RVV. Given Nibali's cobbles performance in 2014, and his recent win at SMR, I am going to have to bump his star value up a bit when I weigh my opinions in the GCs. I really thought Nibali was not quite at the same level as the other GC guys, but he has shown consistency over the years. I like that.

Of course, the weather in July on those cobbles will be extremely important. Dry cobbles are much easier and are less selective.

I call upon FtP to perform the raindance to end all raindances.
Not for Roubaix, but for the Tour. :D

I am going to remove one star from Het Nieuwsblaad because they did not put #quickstep Terpstra on their stars list, but inlcuded Lampaert who is by no means the same calibre as his teammate  :P

On Eurosport here, they only showed the last 60 km, and the selection had already taken place when I started watching,  with Lampaert and Terpstra up in front. Lampaert clearly faded a loooong way from the finish line, and Terpstra was going slowly on the hills waiting for him. Gilbert almost bridged (with #lotto Benoot and #bmc van Avermaet but then Terpstra put on the overdrive in front and just kept going till the finish line.
The commentary on Eurosport isn't the most competent cycling commentary, but he summed up the day by saying: "today, we have seen quickstep quickstep quickstep quickstep quickstep quickstep quickstep quickstep quickstep quickstep quickstep quickstep quickstep!" There might have been a few others around, but nothing really important!

better take 4 or 5 away from Sagan :P

but yeah, good race. Although it needs to be mentioned that the selection was made due to a big crash though, leaving plenty of big guys over a minute behind. Quickstep then kept pushing and unleashed Terpstra & Lampaert on the Boonenberg

yep big crash split the pack - though most of the big names made it into the first group.  Quickstep had their entire team on the front and pushed very hard (with Astana doing the chasing in the second group) ... and then came the Taienberg where everything just exploded.

Quickstep launched Terpstra and Lampaert, and left Sagan, GVA and Benoot to do all the work.   That trio (with Gilbert and Stybar for company) chased for a good long time before eventually being joined by what was left of the group.

Again on the climbs it broke up again leaving Sagan sadly behind, definitely not in the same shape as last year.  GVA, Benoot and Gilbert all had a go at trying to bridge to the front with no success ... before everyone essentially neutralised each other trying and no one wanted to do all the chasing, so no one did.

As much is no one likes him - great race by Terpstra.  Lampaert did an amazing job - so much work early on as they were out front for a very long time.

Finally got to watch the whole broadcast. Good race. It's not often these days a team can make a plan and make it stick. Good race - still some tension in the last few km, to see if the chasers would get together enough to bridge.
