2018 Giro CQ Game
« on: April 27, 2018, 08:21 »
One week and about half an hour from now, the Giro d'Italia starts in the quiet, typically Italian, town of Jerusalem.

Teams are beginning to be released, adverts are appearing on EuroSport: it must be time to get the game ready.
Discussion in the Vuelta thread last season was in favour of following the UCI in reducing the size of teams, but keeping the budget the same.  Who can dethrone Fauniera, last year's winner?

Team of exactly eight riders  all of whom must be Giro starters.
Budget    Budget will be 3500 points.

Price of riders
CQ score for 12 months to 29th April, for which the update file that CQ released on Monday 30th will be considered definitive.
There is a dropbox spreadsheet of riders likely to participate and their prices for the game, and a facility for checking the team total, as soon as possible after that download is available, and I shall try to keep that up to date with team changes as best I can.

Submitting your team
By personal message to me, either here or at CN,
Please send the team with names formatted as per CQ. (Surname[space]Forename and nothing else, not even price or team name: Spanish/Portuguese names need particular care, as do accents or other diacritics)  It makes an enormous difference to the efficiency of adding teams.  If you use the dropbox spreadsheet it will be a simple copy and paste job.

I have logged my team with Bminchow, the first person to submit a team, and won't change it unless any of them drop out, so there cannot be any accusation of me stealing everyone else's best ideas.

Deadline
The start of the race, which I believe to be Friday 4th May at 11am in Jerusalem, 10am in Western Europe, 9am in GB/Ireland, and other equivalents wherever you may be.

Scoring
Points issued according to the points tables of CQ (column GT2).  Note there are no points issued for the young rider category.  The winner will be declared as of the CQ points given by 27th May.  Subsequent penalties/retroactive disqualifications, should there be any, will not effect the game.

Entries as of Friday morning, I need to go to work but time for a few last minute entries.

If you have not seen your name 12 hours after submitting it, drop me a reminder.  If you are on another forum, by all means plug it there.  We had 46 teams last year, let's try to beat it this time around.

Good luck to all.

Thanks to CQ for getting the Monday update online in good time this week: the spreadsheet is ready (two teams still to confirm, I have posted PCS's prediction for now for FdJ and EF), my team is ready to send to the first manager to submit.

A short run-in for this one: I need the teams by Friday morning.  I look forward to seeing your teams and discovering where I have gone wrong.

Just over 24 hours before the race starts and the game closes.

22 teams in so far, with 49 of the 176 riders named, 19 of them as unique picks.  There is one rider on a very high proportion of teams, 3 others on more than half the teams, and to be among the most popular 8, a rider would need at least 7 picks thus far.
One team has the most popular team possible within the budget, while another has a popularity ranking just 44% of that.  4 riders costing 800pts or more have been chosen, while 9 men costing fewer than 100 points have been considered worth including.

Don't forget that the race starts, rather inconveniently for those trying to run a game based on it, on a Friday morning.  24 hours to get your teams in.

Thanks for all the entries: strange shift in popularities over the last 24 hours which I haven't seen any news story to explain.  Work and other commitments means I probably won't be able to do much by way of putting up the data until late this evening.

I tend not to be too fussy about late entries, so although I have said 9am, hold on for about 3 hours please, from the timestamp of this post if you want to put up your own team in case others are slightly after that.

    The teams

There are 44 of them, and here they are (in alphabetical order, and price order within each team).  The asterisk, as ever, indicates unique picks.  A few forgot that team size had changed to 8, some thought it had risen to 12, and some either penalised themselves with a very low spend, or tried to break the bank with a high one, but everyone got in with a legitimate team in the end.

I'm not sure Igor Anton was a good pick being unique. But more reason to cheer for him.
For the first time (as far as I can remember) I didn't pick a sprinter because the good ones are to expensive for the few sprint stages and I rather cheer for a climber like Igor Anton than a sprinter like Guardini or Sbaragli.

    Rider Popularity

70 of the 176 (well, 175 now, luckily no-one had chosen Siutsou) riders, have been picked.  Chaves is the must-have at an irresistible price, and but he is followed on the popularity table by two of the most expensive picks.  At the time I left to work on Thursday, I think Lopez had 11 picks to just 2 for Pinot, but confidence in the Frenchman blossomed on Thursday, and he was on almost every team I opened when I got in.

These selections, remember, are out of 44 teams:

    36: CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban
    25: LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel
    24: PINOT Thibaut
    20: FORMOLO Davide
    19: KANGERT Tanel
    17: WOODS Michael
    15: GUARDINI Andrea
    14: VAN POPPEL Danny
9:  DENNIS Rohan, O'CONNOR Ben, SBARAGLI Kristian
    8: BRAMBILLA Gianluca
7: BENNETT George, CARTHY Hugh, GIBBONS Ryan
6: FERNANDEZ ANDUJAR Ruben, GESINK Robert, YATES Simon
5: BONIFAZIO Niccolo, CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio, MEINTJES Louis, PANTANO GOMEZ Jarlinson, VERVAEKE Louis
4: DE MARCHI Alessandro, DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd, HERMANS Ben, MORABITO Steve, REICHENBACH Sébastien
3: ARU Fabio, BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto, BONNET William, CICCONE Giulio, MODOLO Sacha, SEPULVEDA Eduardo
2: ATAPUMA HURTADO Jhon Darwin, BENNETT Sam, DUPONT Hubert, HAIG Jack, HENAO MONTOYA Sergio Luis, HIRT Jan, MARECZKO Jakub, PLAZA MOLINA Ruben, TORRES AGUDELO Rodolfo Andres

and those picked just the once are indicated in the previous post.

For a Collective Wisdom team within budget, I can't find a combination better than Ruvu75's selection, so I'll do something different, and in acknowledgement of the big jump from 8th and 9th in popularity, this time.  The most popular 8 riders have a total cost of 4158, so the score of that team will be 3500/4158 of their scores (rounded to nearest whole number)

    Team popularity rankings

36 points if you have Chaves, 1 point if you have a unique pick.  Sometimes there is a high correlation between this and the final results, sometimes there isn't.  Some take pride in being high on these tables, others delight in having an idiosyncratic team that will be low.

    Expensive picks

It is the biggest buys, and the proportion of the budget entrusted to him/them, that determine the main hopes of any team in these games.  Here are the riders selected who cost 700 points or more:

    Dumoulin and Pinot: Bicycle Boy

Aru   and Lopez: Blues in the Bottle, Search, Shalgo

    Pinot
and Lopez: BikeRacer33, Fauniera, GPBlanco, Handbrake, Laarsland, Leadbelly, LightBing, Minessa, Semir S, Squire
and Yates: Los Brolin, Mellow Velo
       and S Bennett:Tigerion
on his own: Axl, Comodoro, Del1962, Gotland, Nathanptz, Russell23, SafeBet, Salvarani, The Pirate81, Trudgin

    Lopez and Pozzovivo: Googolplex
       and Yates: Rote Laterne, Scrool07
on his own: Armchair Cyclist, Caruut, Drebola, Hakkie, Kazistuta, Koronin, Premier Andrew, Ruvu75, Vladimir

Poels with Yates and S Bennett: Yellow Knight
       and Yates: Bminchow

While half the teams made room for 2 of these expensive riders, and Yellow Knight even managed to squeeze in 3, three teams invested rather more cautiously: Amis Velo and Carlo Altrensig both have George Bennett as their most expensive riders, and Chiron picked no-one dearer than Mareczko.

Odd that nobody selected Aru without also including Lopez.

    Stage 1

Purple points (Because I still refuse to call that colour 'cyclamen')
These are guaranteed points, that you get even if the rider doesn't finish the race.  They are stage points for the first 10 finishers, and the daily bonus for the race leader.

    DUMOULIN Tom   88   1   teams
    DENNIS Rohan   40   9   teams
    CAMPENAERTS Victor   25   0   teams
GONÇALVES Jose Isidro Maciel   15   0   teams
    DOWSETT Alex   10   1   teams
BILBAO LOPEZ DE ARMENTIA Pello   7   1   teams
    YATES Simon   5   6   teams
    SCHACHMANN Maximilian   3   1   teams
    MARTIN Tony   2   0   teams
    POZZOVIVO Domenico   1   1   teams

    1   BicycleBoy   88
    2   Bminchow   45
    3=   AmisVelo, Armchair_Cyclist, Del1962, Drebola, PremierAndrew, Ruvu75, SafeBet, ThePirate81   40

    13   LosBrolin, Mellow_Velo, Rote_Laterne, Scrool07, Yellow_Knight   5
    18   Salvarani   3
    19   Googolplex   1
    20=   Everyone else   0

    Pink Points
This is based on the principle of allocating points as though the race is over.  It is pretty meaningless until we get to the first serious climb, and even after that can have some fairly dramatic changes, but it is what the main event is about.  Scores can be negative, primarily if a rider drops significantly in GC.  It includes the Purple points, but also the GC position points, and points for standings in the points and KoM standings (but no Kom points yet).

Bicycle Boy is the only one to have gone for Dumoulin, and that sort of courage deserves at least an appearance at the top of the table.  It might even get a placing that sticks.

    Stage 2 to Tel Aviv

    Purple points
For those new to following these games, the purple points every day will be the top ten, plus the pink jersey wearer.  This year, on the sprint stages we will probably see few teams laying claim to the big points, as Viviani's price meant he was unchosen, and his presumed supremacy meant other moderately expensive sprinters are rare selections.

    VIVIANI Elia   70   0   teams
MARECZKO Jakub   40   2   teams (Chiron, Trudgin)
BENNETT Sam   25   2   teams (Tigerion, Yellow Knight)
    DENNIS Rohan   18   9   teams
    BONIFAZIO Niccolo   15   5   teams
    MODOLO Sacha   10   3   teams
    VENTURINI Clément   7   0   teams
    GIBBONS Ryan   5   7   teams
    BELLETTI Manuel   3   0   teams
    PLANCKAERT Baptiste   2   0   teams
    DRUCKER Jempy   1   0   teams

    1   Chiron   50
    2   Tigerion   45
    3   Trudgin   40
    4   Yellow_Knight   30
    5   SafeBet   23
    6=   Nathanptz, Search   20
    8=   AmisVelo, Armchair_Cyclist, Bminchow, Del1962, Drebola, PremierAndrew, Ruvu75, ThePirate81   18
    16=   Scrool07, Vladimir   15
    18=   Carlo_Algatrensig, Kazistuta   10
    20=   Laarsland, LosBrolin   5
    22=   Everyone else   0

Although I wouldn't think of it as the main game, there can be some bragging rights in topping the Purple points table, and some teams in the past have looked as though they were put together with that goal in mind.  Maybe that ambition is behind the multisprinter teams of Chiron (Marecsko, Modolo and Van Poppel), Tigerion (Bennett, Bonifazio, Gibbons and Sbaragli) and some others.

    Standings
For the moment, top two finishers in the prologue, with the pink jersey bonuses, still define the top 10.

    Pink points

Dumoulin, and the Bicycle Boy team, demonstrate how negative points are a thing in this way of keeping score.  At the end of the race, CQ will give 500 points to the GC winner and 375 to whoever is second.  So in falling from 1st to second, he loses 125 projected points.  He also loses a bunch in the points classification.  Note also that the KoM classification makes an impact, with Barbin getting a 70 point increase despite being 67th on the stage.

    Standings

The top ten at this early (and probably irrelevant) stage consists of the 9 Dennis teams, followed by Bicycle Boy (Dumoulin).  Yates is the main reason that Bminchow leads the Dennis teams, while the Pinot-Formolo combination raises Pirate and Del to the virtual podium, Kangert throwing the balance in The Pirate's favour.

Chiron manages a 15 place jump in position.

    Team popularity rankings

36 points if you have Chaves, 1 point if you have a unique pick.  Sometimes there is a high correlation between this and the final results, sometimes there isn't.  Some take pride in being high on these tables, others delight in having an idiosyncratic team that will be low.

Stage 4 Back in Italy (apologies to any MIS supporters), and up the Mur of Caltagirone

    Purple points

When Kirby was identifying Battaglin as Bennett, some teams will have thought that they were packing the top 5.  A few of our popular mid-budget, low-mid top ten GC type picks get a mention and some points

It is not so much that riders have moved up; more that non-GC men with a decent TT ranking have dropped down.  Note that Guardini's DNF (or was it a DNS? I heard some mention of a second withdrawal on the restday, but never heard who) results in a 15 point loss: it had been assumed that he would be a finisher outside the top 50, but even that would have been worth 15 CQ points.

Stage 5 to Santa Ninfa: similar type of riders to yesterday, but not as many points.

    9   PremierAndrew   152
    10   Yellow_Knight   125

    Pink points

The main shake out of those who are by no means climbers happened yesterday, so only a slight continuation of that process today.  Time lost was more relevant than projected points for Lopez, on whom more than half the teams have risked more than 30% of their budget; Pinot, almost as popular, lost almost as many points, but that was simply dropping one place due to Goncalves getting 4 bonus seconds.

    VISCONTI Giovanni   42   1   team
    MULLEN Ryan   25   1   team
    DENNIS Rohan   16   9   teams
    SCHACHMANN Maximilian   15   1   team
    GAVAZZI Francesco   14   1   team
    YATES Simon   10   6   teams

LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel   -17   25   teams
    DOWSETT Alex   -17   1   team

Not very large scores today, but that is just as well given that most of them are negative scores.
    1   Yellow_Knight   39 (Mullen and Yates)
2   Bminchow   29 (Dennis and Yates)

Bminchow extends his lead still further, as Amis Velo sneaks onto the podium, and Mellow Velo into the top ten.  A couple of 3 place rises, for Axl and Search, is as dramatic as it got.

    1   Bminchow   1389
    2   ThePirate81   1218
    3   AmisVelo   1108

    10   Mellow_Velo   788
    11   BicycleBoy   783
    12   Rote_Laterne   761

    32   Tigerion   456
    33   GPBlanco   434
    34   Kazistuta   433
    35   LightBing   430

The first MTF usually renders the previous standings almost irrelevant: tomorrow the table could look very different.

    Stage 6 to Mt Etna

    Purple points

The GC guys finally get to show themselves, and and these are some of the names that we all had to consider when making our selections.

CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban   70pts   36 teams
    YATES Simon   58   6 teams
    PINOT Thibaut   25   24 teams

    DUMOULIN Tom   3   1 team
    ARU Fabio   2   3 teams

Loads of points, and I'm not sure that anyone has had the top 4 on a stage, and the leader jersey points, in a GT CQ game
1   LosBrolin   168 (Chaves, Yates, Pinot and Bennett)
    2   Mellow_Velo   153 (Chaves, Yates and Pinot)
3   Bminchow   143 (Chaves, Yates and Bennett)
4   Rote_Laterne   140 (Chaves, Yates, Lopez and Carapaz)
    5=   Axl, Russell23   110

    Top ten guaranteed points standings:

    Pink points

    Huge points swings today.
CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban   359pts   36 teams
    YATES Simon   284   6 teams
    PINOT Thibaut   140   24 teams

    ARU Fabio   79   3 teams
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio   67   5 teams
    O'CONNOR Ben   52   9 teams
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel   40   25 teams
    ---
    PREIDLER Georg   -34   1 team
BILBAO LOPEZ DE ARMENTIA Pello   -50   1 team
    FORMOLO Davide   -70   20 teams
    SCHACHMANN Maximilian   -145   1 team
    DENNIS Rohan   -285   9 teams

There will probably not be such a day of swings again: from now on it will be individuals' ups and downs that will create most of the changes, alongside the daily points.  There won't be many people moving up 10 or more places in a day from now on, but there may well be drops that big or much bigger.

Gains and losses on the day
    1   LosBrolin   899
    2   Mellow_Velo   857
    3   Rote_Laterne   677

    13   Googolplex   523
    14   Gotland   514

    24   Caruut   450
    25   Hakkie2   438
    26   Bminchow   419
    27   BluesInTheBottle   418
    28   Salvarani   406
    29   Chiron   363
    30   Vladimir   354
    31   Scrool07   320
    32   Yellow_Knight   277
    33   Drebola   178
    34   Del1962   172

    44   PremierAndrew   -211
       Collective_Wisdom   400

And so the standings get a thorough shake-up, but not so thorough that the leader is dethroned.  Although it was a bad day for those with Dennis on the daily losses table, he remains (for now) the 4th highest projected scorer, and a very good return on investment.
Just behind Bminchow, whose lead is almost undented, Mellow Velo, Los Brolin and Rote Laterne all share the Michelton Scott duo with him, rise from 10th, 14th and 12th respectively, and are followed by most of what was this morning's top ten. Los Brolin was one of 4 teams to rise 11 places on the day, but they are all eclipsed by Axl, with a 12 position surge.
    1   Bminchow   1808

Stage 7 back on the mainland, a sprint to Praia a Mare

    Purple points

Its a sprint, so some of the fringe sprinters who were not too expensive get marginal points.  But this time the nt too expensive second best sprinter in the race takes top spot, to the joy of 2 teams.

    VIVIANI Elia   40   0 team
    BONIFAZIO Niccolo   25   5 teams
    YATES Simon   18   6 teams

VAN POPPEL Danny   10   14 teams
    MARECZKO Jakub   7   2 team
    VENTURINI Clément   5   0 team
    PEDERSEN Mads   3   0 team
    ROELANDTS Jürgen   2   0 team

Other than the purple points and a bit of a shuffle in the points jersey, the most significant issue was Betancur's lack of concentration in staying close behind his team mates, losing 4 places in the process.

GC guys to the fore, but not the most expensive ones: that is the recipe for plenty of teams to score: all of us, in fact.  Some comeback for all the Formolo teams after his poor day on Thursday

Time bonuses boost Pinot ahead of Pozzovivo on GC, and moves up in GC for Carapaz and Lopez, and down for O'Connor, means there is some change in projections as well as the daily points.

That lead is slightly wider than it was this morning, and although the podium remains the same, Rote Laterne in4th is a lot closer to it than he was.  Nathanptz is the highest placed riser (to 6th from 8th), Scrool gets a leap of 8 places to appear in the top ten, and Kazistuta's movement is one better.

Stage 9 To the Emperor's Field at the Big Rock of Italy.

    Purple points

Loads of points today, but there is some consistency emerging between who is getting the big points rather than the crumbs.

    Pink points

He couldn't move up in GC standings, but Yates still picks up KoM and Points jersey positions, as well as the stage points.  Riders who could stay close on Etna, but not on this much longer climb, have slipped back on GC, so several riders gain places, and projected points, and others lose.  Dumoulin and his team will not have considered the day unsuccessful, despite what the points on the day say.

    Standings

The top 4, those who have both Yates and Chaves, now have a very large margin over the rest: they stay in the same order, but the gaps between them all have narrowed slightly.  Nathanptz, Carlo A, Scrool and Russell all move up in the top ten, mainly as Dennis drops to a more realistic position, and the biggest jump of the day is shared by Axl and Kazistuta.

    Standings

The top  four, those with the Yates-Chaves combination, remain on top, but the two other Yates teams are now close behind them, and Chaves' contribution is now much reduced, although his stage points and 2nd in the KoM are still there.  Of the other Yatesians, Scrool was already in the top ten (8th this morning), but Yellow Knoght has a jump from 14th into the elite.  Bicycle Boy and Safe Bet far outstrip him, with jumps of 20 and 21 places respectively.

    Pink points

Other than purple points, the most relevant issues are Aru finally getting ahead of some of those who were never tipped to beat him, and Woods getting blocked at the bottom of the hill (as far as I can find out)

    YATES Simon   93   6 teams
    DUMOULIN Tom   40   1 team

That is 3 times in the last 4 stages that Rote Laterne has had the best nett change on the day.

    Standings

Bminchow's lead was big enough to accommodate Woods' losses today: Mellow Velo's 2nd place was not so secure, and he falls off the podium.  No other changes in the top ten, and a 5 place jump for SemirS was the biggest.

I'm not expecting much drama other than purple points for the next couple of days, but I thought a team featuring Chaves, Woods and Meintjes might be competitive, so what do I know?

Again, very little change apart from the points described above.  Highest position in GC to see any change was 39th, vacated by Chaves as his drop continues.  The withdrawal of Kangert will hit many teams, but they may already feel that his selection had already hit their teams.

Tomorrow should be a case of a few riders changing position, but causing large point shifts.  But which of them?

The Yates teams still dominate, but there has been quite a bit of movement among them.  Bminchow remains in the lead, but the losses of Bennett and Dennis bring him much closer to his pursuers, and in particular Rote Laterne, who rises from 4th to a much closer second than we have seen since the race started.  Los Brolin had the worst day of the Yatesians, dropping from 2nd to 5th, Bennett and Pinot having hurt his score today.  The rest of the top ten remain in their positions, with Kazistuta the highest non-Yatesian to move upwards, and Googolplex the biggest (12 place) riser of the day.

Ciccone's points have been boosted by his rise to 2nd in the KoM standings: those are also the points that Chaves has lost today.  Woods has been a particularly volatile pick in terms of his GC position day to day, and the teams that have Aru had probably already realised that he was not going to do much for them, but if they still had hope it has gone now.

A change in leadership for the first time since the race got to Tel Aviv.  Bminchow (who as mentioned above, should recover somewhat through Rohan Dennis on Tuesday) drops to third, now behind Rote Laterne and formerly 4th placed Scrool.  Kazistuta and Googolplex (the highest riser of the day, 8 places) get into the top ten, which now seems to be the battle for what would be the podium if it weren't for Yates.

    Rest Day

I have unscheduled free time this afternoon, so with no stage to watch, a little calculation of what has been.

    Purple points
I identified several stages ago some sprinter heavy teams that might have targetted this aspect of the game, but with the CQ system giving the same points for all types of stages, the small number of stages that sprinters have had to enjoy, and the accumulation of pink jersey wearer points, this is a very different table to the maglia cyclamina.  The Yatesians have had the top 6 positions since stage 10,  and this is why:

Stage points (and pink jersey wearer points in brackets where relevant) for riders with points equivalent to 2nd place on a stage or higher:

    YATES Simon   330 (+180 so 510)   6 teams
    BENNETT Sam   255   2 teams
    VIVIANI Elia   250   0 team
    DUMOULIN Tom   151 (+18, so 169)   1 team
    BATTAGLIN Enrico   126   0 team
    DENNIS Rohan   42 (+ 72 so 114)   9 teams
    PINOT Thibaut   109   24 teams
CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban   101   36 teams
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio   95   5 teams
    POZZOVIVO Domenico   87   1 team
    FORMOLO Davide   85   20 teams
VAN POPPEL Danny   85   14 teams
    MODOLO Sacha   80   3 teams
    WELLENS Tim   77   0 team
    FROOME Chris   71   0 team
    MOHORIC Matej   70   1 team
    BONIFAZIO Niccolo   65   5 teams
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel   64   25 teams
    MARECZKO Jakub   62   2 teams
    WOODS Michael   43   17 teams
GONÇALVES Jose Isidro Maciel   42   0 team
    VISCONTI Giovanni   40   1 team
    DENZ Nico   40   0 team

% of cost recouped in guaranteed points:
    YATES Simon   63.0   6 teams
    BATTAGLIN Enrico   53.2   0 team
    DENZ Nico   44.9   0 team
    BENNETT Sam   34.6   2 teams
CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban   27.9   36 teams
VAN POPPEL Danny   26.0   14 teams
    BONIFAZIO Niccolo   25.2   5 teams
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio   20.5   5 teams
    FORMOLO Davide   20.2   20 teams
    DENNIS Rohan   19.6   9 teams
GONÇALVES Jose Isidro Maciel   18.3   0 team
    MODOLO Sacha   16.6   3 teams
    GIBBONS Ryan   16.0   7 teams
    VIVIANI Elia   13.5   0 team
    MOHORIC Matej   11.7   1 team
    MARECZKO Jakub   10.4   2 teams

For some riders, this is only a small proportion of their points, but these ones are in the bank and can't me lost.

    Pink points

When we add in the projected points, for the Sprints and KoM jerseys as well as the GC, we get the points that the points that make up our pink points competition:

    YATES Simon   1105pts   6 teams
    DUMOULIN Tom   544   1 team
    POZZOVIVO Domenico   409   1 team
    PINOT Thibaut   389   24 teams

CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio   311   5 teams
    BENNETT Sam   310   2 teams
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel   304   25 teams
    FROOME Chris   271   0 team
    DENNIS Rohan   234   9 teams
    BENNETT George   185   7 teams
BILBAO LOPEZ DE ARMENTIA Pello   162   1 team
    FORMOLO Davide   159   20 teams

    GENIEZ Alexandre   110   0 team

    MOHORIC Matej   108   1 team
    OOMEN Sam   105   0 team
VAN POPPEL Danny   105   14 teams

Bennett (G), Bilbao, Konrad, O'Connor, Geniez, and Oomen get into this list with very few purple points: I guess that identifies them as Zubeldia-like.

    As percentages of spend:
BONNET William   (infinite %age)    3 teams

A few there to condemn all of our selection policies

    Splitting the Yatesians
For as long as Simon Yates (are we all meant to call him Simon Peter Yates now?) remains invincible, or even if he loses a couple of places, it is hard to see the stranglehold on the top positions of those 6 teams relenting.  So what other picks make the difference between them, and how will they gain or lose points from here on? Has Yates done enough?
Not whether he has enough to win the race, but given that his guaranteed points are already more than the points for winning the GC, and that his teams have riders that will move up if he were to suddenly withdraw, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to see what would happen if he were to fail to emerge on the start ramp for tomorrow's time trial.

And it appears that he has: the top three remain as they are, Nathanptz would move above 2 of the Yatesians, but Yellow Knoght would plummet to 16th.  Bicycle Boy, as the only team with Dumoulin, would gain most, but would only rise to 8th.

Stage 16 The Time Trial/motor drafting challenge

    Purple points
Time trial specialists, rather like sprinters, are hard to pick in these games: if they are good enough to get many points, they may be too expensive for the few opportunities they get.  Some TTers (like err, Aru? Seriously??)are, of course, GC contenders, at least for the top ten, so they may get a look in.

    DENNIS Rohan   70   9 teams
    MARTIN Tony   40   0 team
    DUMOULIN Tom   25   1 team
    YATES Simon   18   6 teams
VAN EMDEN Jos   15   0 team
    FROOME Chris   10   0 team
    DOWSETT Alex   7   1 team
    HAGA Chad   5   0 team
    ARU Fabio   3   3 teams
DE LA CRUZ MELGAREJO David   2   1 team
    KIRYIENKA Vasil   1   0 team

1   Bminchow   88 (Dennis and Yates)
2=   Everyone else with Dennis   70
    10   BicycleBoy   25
    11=   Other Dumoulin teams   18
16   Shalgo   10 (Dowsett and Aru)
    17=   BluesInTheBottle, Search   3
    19   Chiron   2

    Standings
    1   Bminchow   961
    2   Rote_Laterne   876
    3   Yellow_Knight   846
    4   Scrool07   839
    5   Mellow_Velo   781
    6   LosBrolin   773
    7   Ruvu75   562
    8   Tigerion   545
    9   ThePirate81   522
    10   AmisVelo   518

As predicted, Bminchow's lead grows again.  A few Dennis teams reappear in the lower part of the top ten.

    Pink points

Getting overtaken by Froome and/or Dennis is the main thing that happened points wise to relevant riders today, with a few exceptions.

    DENNIS Rohan   165   9 teams
    DUMOULIN Tom   26   1 teams
    YATES Simon   18   6 teams
BILBAO LOPEZ DE ARMENTIA Pello   15   1 team
    FORMOLO Davide   10   20 teams

    BENNETT George   -30   7 teams
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel   -50   25 teams
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio   -65   5 teams

A very steep dropaway after the Dennis teams, but those are of course the teams that may suffer if the climbers behind him on GC claw back time of stages 18-20:
1   Bminchow   159 (Dennis, Yates, Formolo, and only Bennett of the main fallers)
2   Del1962   148 (Dennis and Formolo, but Pinot)
3   ThePirate81   146 (Dennis and Formolo, but Pinot)
4   AmisVelo   141 (Dennis and Formolo, but Bennett)
5   SafeBet   136  (Dennis, but Pinot)
    6   Ruvu75   121

    Standings

The long term leader was best on the day: the two that overtook him on Sunday were 2 of the worst 5 on the day.  Bminchow is therefore restored to the lead, such is the effect if having Dennis rather than Crapaz and Lopez in a timt trial.  But if they regain that time in the mountains to come, then all is still in the balance.
Del1962 becomes the best of the rest, and leads The Pirate81 and Ruvu75 into the top ten, while the best riser of the day, going up 17 places, is Armchair Cyclist, which can only mean that I must be expected to fall back again almost as quickly.

Just about every team has one or two riders who could feature tomorrow, assuming we are to be allowed one stage for the break. Randomly distributed purple points (+ 18 for the Yates teams), and pink points that simply echo that, lie ahead.

The climber's battle to undo the damage done in the time trial starts tomorrow: will that be manifested in any undoing of the changes here yesterday?

    Standings
Our leader has all three of Dennis, Bennett and Woods, the three main point losers of the day.  The team in second avoids all of them, but has best GC point gainer, Lopez.  But that still only removes just over half of the gap between the top two.  Nathanptz moves up  2 places to be best of the rest, and Salvarani gets a 10 place boost from Schachmann's win.
