Giro Time Trials (Stage 1 + 16)
« on: April 28, 2018, 17:32 »
Giro d'Italia Stage 1 - Jerusalem  ›  Jerusalem 9.7km

The stage is an individual time trial running through the city. The roads are variably wide and the route is very wavy, with several bends and constantly changing gradients. Split time is taken at km 5.1. At km 7.3, the route takes in a short, well-lit tunnel. Final kilometres: the last 3 km are wavy, still on city roads. The route descends slightly in the first part, with a bend 750 m before the finish. The final 300 m run steeply uphill, with gradients peaking 9% over the last 100 m. The home straight is on 6.5-m wide tarmac.

This is for stage one obviously. The later TT will no doubt be slightly different as it's longer and less technical.

    Dennis

I've made Rohan my favourite. My initial thoughts on the course are that although it is slightly up and down and has quite a few turns, it's not technical technical. You never know though how barricading will change it. He just got pipped in the Romandie prologue and the MTT wasn't exactly to his forte, but he excelled in Abu Dhabi and TA.

    :onfire1 :onfire1

    Dumoulin
    Van Emden
    Campenaerts

Van Emden has certainly stepped up the past couple of years, but when everyone is fresh at the start of the race is he worthy of three stars? Probably just a podium for him.

    :onfire1

    Wellens
    Cavagna
    Schachmann
    Martin
    Dowsett
    Froome
    Kiryienka
    Poels
    De La Cruz
    Pedersen

I'm not even sure tbh if Martin is deserving of one star, but he could just squeeze into the top-ten I guess.

So how did Stage 1 look?

I watched one of the official highlight videos but it ONLY showed the finish line. There was no sense of the course itself.
Anything interesting or unique about it?

And how was the turnout of fans?

looked alright to me. Not massive crowds, but they seemed to have a good time

#fixall Campenaerts must have been delighted that Dumoulin went quicker in the end, by the way... missing #pink by 0.04s would be hard to swallow I guess ;)

I think the crowds were a bit disappointing, compared to the turnout at other grande partenzas, but then again what do you get by hosting a mass turnout events in the streets of a global hotspot for terrorism. If you planned to travel to Jerusalem for tourism, maybe you would want to avoid just that day?  (not saying there were any security problems at all, the Israeli police probably one of the strongest at fighting terrorism, without necessarily endorsing all their methods.. )
However, those that showed up (quite a few, after all), seemed to have a nice day. However, the day's winner when it comes to audience clearly was the Tour of Yorkshire.

    RGS 0 - ASO 1

The course was hilly, but not steep and technical, with few long straight sections for the most aerodymic TT straight-line specialists (like #katusha Madz Würtz-Schmidt) to tuck in and pedal for high speed. To compare it to alpine skiing, a giant slalom where technical execution of a long string of turns and other obstacles matters a lot more than the straight line speed which is the key aspect of some of the downhill competitions.

I saw with my own eyes, just before my feet, last year in the Bergen ITT World Championship that Dumoulin (and perhaps even better: Roglic) executed a section with two linked hairpin turns much better than Froome, who was wobbling on the straight section between the turns, and entered the second one quite a bit on the inside, so he had to brake to get around it. That was something like 4 secs to Dumoulin on about 40 meters, and 2 turns. The difference was the same in Jerusalem. Dumoulin just rides better through difficult terrain.

In other words, I think they found one of Froome's weak spots. Time trials aren't just about kilometers...

Dumoulin went all in because he thinks he has to. #sunweb are probably not too happy about defending #rosa from day 1 so I expect them to lend it to #lotto Campenaerts or #bmc Dennis,  if they want it.

Looking at the results, the stand out performance was by Simon Yates; Chaves not so much. Yates might be worth a little each way speculation.

should be an interesting one, and the 2nd part does not seem to be as as flat as it first looks like

the weather is unlikely to be kind to the riders either, with rain on the forecast more or less all day

    https://www.3bmeteo.com/giornale-meteo/meteo-giro-d-italia-2018---16--tappa--marted--21-maggio--trento-rovereto-192526

Alex Dowsett mentioned that him and Tony Martin tried to lose as much time as possible yesterday to get an earlier starting spot due to the wind forecast being more favorable in the beginning, but I can't find any proof for that

Katusha surprised me with their performances (three in the top-ten) on stage one after showing not a lot TT-wise during the season so far. I wonder what the reason was? Special bikes? Reconned the stage thoroughly in advance? Tomorrow's stage is very different, but it will be interesting to see if they can reproduce those sort of results.

"hoping Tony, Mads, Jose and I go 1-2-3-4 in no particular order, and Yates keeps the jersey. He fully deserves it after throwing caution to wind like he has whilst in the jersey, not sure how he’ll get into a tt position with balls that big mind" is what I read Dowsett saying earlier on.

He is probably joking of course... but there could be a bit of truth in there. If they act according to early weather forecasts two days in advance, they seem to have a plan at least.

should be an interesting one, and the 2nd part does not seem to be as as flat as it first looks like

I loaded the profile into google earth and it seems one of the more pointy looking hills there is a tunnel and the profile follows the surface above the tunnel, instead of the road surface inside the tunnel.  I would call it a flat and straight more than hilly time trial. While there are moderate ascending and descending sections, I don't think those will be decisive. Aerodynamics and power to be the key winning characteristics. And maybe,  weather.
The accelrations that were typical for Jerusalem ITT will not be of importance here, sorry Simon!

I think you're right, yeah. Although van Emden said, that one of the climbs (with ~10k to go) is steeper than he thought and it could break the rhythm quite a lot.

As he still thinks it's a good course for him (and he was pretty honest about the first one being not) it's probably more one on the flat side indeed though

and - surprise, surprise - Froome crashed during the recon

At first glance, it actually looks like he's levitating. David Blaine-style.

Alex Dowsett mentioned that him and Tony Martin tried to lose as much time as possible yesterday to get an earlier starting spot due to the wind forecast being more favorable in the beginning, but I can't find any proof for that

the various forecasts still differ from each other by quite a margin, but this one for example would support Katusha's idea of the early runners having an advantage:

Also yr.no sees better wind conditions at the start

The one thing they do all agree on is that the wind, whichever direction it comes from, will be light.
Best guess having looked at a number, is from the North East.

Campenaerts just did another recon of the course, and now with the wet roads he says it has become "super technical", and all corners are "very slippery"

I really hope the race doesn't get decided by someone coming off today. Isn't that the same every day? Well not exactly, sometimes a race is teed up perfectly as it is and shaking it up can only have a negative impact. This is one of those days
