Giro 2018: The teams and the riders
« on: May 01, 2018, 22:44 »
I think we need a thread for presenting the start list, and I want to do that by using the team's own announcements. I am going to post them in groups of 3 and 3 teams.

This top post will be updated with the complete list including start numbers later.

Does nobody else think they should have taken Sosa? Of course not to ride all of it, but just say to him that he's riding the first 9 stages and for him to really give it a go on the 3 MTFs that includes. Good experience for next year (assuming they win the Coppa Italia again) and he would probably have a better chance of getting a result than the climbers included.

    I fully agree.

This line-up has Rodolfo Torres who is alright in the mountains, but really not that exciting. The rest is, as far as I can see, a mix of Italian sprinters & sub-toppers - going for stage wins, I presume.
Cattaneo or Masnada might also show something climbing-wise, but I'm not expecting them to conquer the world either.
Giving Sosa the first 'week' (until the rest day after stage 9), with no expectations as for results, but freedom to try something if he feels good, wouldn't have been much of a risk in my opinion.

Then again, maybe Savio wants Sosa to win the Giro in his first participation next year. :lol

From the teams presented so far, Ag2R looks like a team that doesn't really try too hard (but could take a stage) and  Astana look like they will try (but it is still a B team), whereas Bahrain probably can take Pozzovivo to the top 10...not too exciting, any of this.

(I still doubt very much that #astana Lopez has the restitution needed for a 3 week. He seems to ride fantastic one day and then suffer the next couple of days.)

I think Sam Benett is going to be the one that leaves his mark on this race. There's one of the better teams for the sprint here.

Louis Meintjes a.k.a. the new Zubeldia, almost a guaranteed top 10 even if you never hear about him during the race.
Or perhaps, if it is true that Bob Jungels just won a monument: maybe this African could take one step up this year too?

The team is mostly set up to support Meintjes I think.

And one of the nominees for best team presentation (if you read french):

    https://twitter.com/GroupamaFDJ/status/991240814310248449

The team has one objective: podium for their leader

    team is:
    leader Thibaut Pinot, (of course)

climbing domestiques a.ka. the Swiss guard:
Sebastien Reichenbach, Steve Morabito, Georg Preidler, Anthony Roux,

    flatland domestiques:
William Bonnet, Jeremy Roy, Matthieu Ladagnous

A team with an ambition and a squad to match their ambitions.   :cool

on to a velorooms fan favorite judging by the number of posts in the team thread this year:

    https://twitter.com/yallaACADEMY/status/989159454762504192

A bit of a controversial team selection as it is argued that it is not necessarily the 8 best riders on the team, but on the other hand I think the captain here is pretty clear. Also curious to see if Neilands has another surprise tucked away up his sleeve for this year, as well as betting on at least one Israeli rider in the break of the day for stage 2.  :)

Notice: the team formerly known as Lotto-Soudal will now be known as Lotto-Fix all. They have some issues with copy and paste so they have not been able to clear Adam Hansen from their lineup presentation, but the others on the list are there because of their merits. Hansen is also known as the programmer behind the team's logistics system, so he is probably quite a smart guy :-x

I think Lopez suffers on short, steep climbs. But there are not too many of those in this Giro.

In what way do you think it's a B Team? To me it look slike the strongest team they could line up

A B team because of the captain, who's strongpoints are a bit similar to Froome and Dumoulin, but just isn't as strong as they are. It is hard to see he'll easily come to chances to ride home a win against those two.

A B team because it is filled up with moderate to strong climbing domestiques and lacks gregarios for hard flat stages. It is a bit unbalanced. Look at FDJ and Sky's lineup to see a more balanced approach.

On the positive side, there's Sanchez who can do almost everything and Kangert that knows very well how to engineer a giro win against a lot of odds. (Or was it Tarame that was with Nibali on that last mountain stage two years ago? :slow)

Finally, A B team because the A team would feature Fuglsang and Valgren :)

a team with Chavez for the long climbs, Yates for the short ones and no one for the time trial (Svein Tuft has been riding more as a helper lately). They are GC podium candidates and will win stages, but - I don't see the GC winner here unless something tactically wild happens (big crash taking out Froome and stomach trouble sidelining Dumoulin, for example).

I can't find movistar's announcement right now, but it is their C-team (basically all their best and second best riders go to TdF because  Froome and Dumoulin are racing here so this year can be the year they have the best chance at TdF in a looong time)

Skipping to a team without any GC objectives whatsoever, but one that might dominate the flatter stages entirely:

Looks a good team to support Meintjes, but I'm not holding my breath on him suddenly becoming an attacking rider. And does he really need much team support for his usual Zubeldia-ing into the top-10?
Then again, maybe the return to #didata will bring back more aggressive racing from him - something he has shown in his earlier years, e.g. in the 2014 Mzansi Tour or in the 2015 Coppi e Bartali - in both races, he soloed to the stage win (in Coppi e Bartali, also the GC win) on the queen stage. And in the 2015 African champs, he also soloed to victory.
So it's not that he doesn't know how.

And then these guys, no longer the team of local heroes called Davide:

    https://twitter.com/Ride_Argyle/status/991351915396108290

Instead it is Sacha - and he could give quickstep some competition on the sprints. The climbers can get a stage win too, especially Mike Woods seems to be in good shape at the monument.

Norwegian commentaries have been quite strongly of the opinion that for being a young rider, Meintjes was racing way too much and to many GT's at #uae and that might severely limit his physical abilities when it comes to the more explosive efforts like attacks. Now, that may get better in #didata, but look, he's racing again in the next GT. I think he's Zubeldia this time too.

I don't think Meintjes will get too much support, O'Connor and Anton will probably be with him here and there, but mainly try to get a stage win.

The way Meintjes is racing this year so far - with no indications of shape at all - he is more likely to fight Hubert Dupont for 25th instead of the Top 10 anyway. He has never been lightening up the preparation races, but this year he was really as invisible as it can get.

Gibbons doesn't look stellar as well this year. Nor Anton. Could be a long three weeks for Dimension, best chance for any notable kind of success is probably O'Connor

on paper, yes. But it's a great team. Carapaz without domestique duties will be fantastic to watch in the high mountains, and if Betancur gets through the first 10 half of the race without too much of a time loss, I'm pretty sure he can become a genuine gc contender.

I'm not quite sure why Ruben is here instead of Roson, but generelly I really like that lineup. All very capable riders with the rare chance to show something on the big stage.

EDIT: strange team composition, they are all-out favorites for the TTT stage.

Jumbo comes with their less famous riders:

However, it is a well composed team with a GC rider, a sprinter, a couple of stage-raid cowboys. I think it's a possible top 5 GC + some stage wins and some days with the mountains jersey.

Needs no introduction, they have one objective and it's the senza fine trophy. If Froome fails early, they may ride for Wout Poels instead - if he has recovered, or Segio Henao - if he hasn't. This can onlhy happen if they are better at spreading the risk than they were last year, when one fall wiped out the entire Sky crew. That's when all for one isn't a good idea anymore...
