Giro 2018 - Stage 21: Roma › Roma
« on: May 27, 2018, 07:33 »
Stage 21: Roma > Roma

Sunday, May 27th

After nine years the Giro returns to Rome.

This time not for a time trial though, but for a nice little crit, 10 laps of 11.5 km.

Could be a sprint, or not. It probably will be, but with very tired legs, so attacks, like three (?) years ago, do stand a chance.

Apart from the stage win, there's not much at stake anymore. Theoretically, Sam Benett could still take the points jersey away from Elia Viviani...

    Team Corridore punti
    1      #ciclamino      VIVIANI Elia      306
    2      #bora      BENNETT Sam      232
    3      #androni      BALLERINI Davide      127

...but with a 74 point deficit on a stage with a maximum of 90 points to be achieved (50 at the finish, 2x20 at the intermediate sprints), Viviani basically just needs to stay on the bike to have this one in the bag.

#pink GC (Froome), #blue mountain jersey (Froome) and team classification are all safely in Sky's hands, Lopez holds the #white white jersey for the best young rider, and #androni Androni leads the intermediate sprint competition (Ballerini) and breakaway competitin (Frapporti) by a big enough margin not to run a risk of getting threatened anymore today.

One thing not decided yet though is the "Combattività generale" ranking, that's based on points handed out for being classified high up at the finish, intermediate sprints and mountains.

    Team Corridore punti
    1      #androni      BALLERINI Davide      62
    2      #quickstep      VIVIANI Elia      54
    3      #mitchelton      YATES Simon      54
    4      #androni      FRAPPORTI Marco      50

So with 1 to 5 points on the table for the top 5 at each intermediate sprint and 1 to 6 for the top 6 at the finish, Viviani is still in the game. I guess Savio will be quite interested in those 4000 Euro though and Ballerini will secure it at one of the intermediate sprints.

    thanks ;)

and I forgot about the all important fair play competition by the way:

    Team punti
    1      #jumbo      TEAM LOTTO NL - JUMBO      0
    2      #ag2r      AG2R LA MONDIALE      0
    3      #bardiani      BARDIANI CSF      0
    4      #movistar      MOVISTAR TEAM      20
    5      #bora      BORA - HANSGROHE       20

Jumbo, Ag2R and Bardiani seem to have done nothing wrong so far - and if it's stays like that today, the tie breaker is the position of the best placed rider per team in GC, which is #jumbo George Bennett in 8th, comfortably ahead of #ag2r Geniez in 11th and #bardiani Ciccone in 41st.

#uae UAE Team Emirates is last with 500 points by the way

Apparently, a misunderstanding of the scoring system led to some bad choices on the time trial stage  :D

After nine years the Giro returns to Rome.

I can't believe it's been that long. I also hadn't realized that Rome had not been revisited since that memorable and nail-biting finish of 2009.

Serious props to Menchov's alert and quick-responding mechanic. He was the MVP of the day.

(I guess we can't do time-stamp embeds on the videos?)
    Start @9:00

The overhead footage @13:00 of the bike change is a classic unto itself.

I remember Menchov's defiant rage of exuberance after surviving this harrowing Time Trial.  :cool

I haven't really cared much for most of the official Giro highlight reels thus far—they tend to miss the key drama point of each stage ending—but these two, from FloBikes (not familiar with them at all) are quite good.

Not sure what was going on with Viviani's rear wheel in the final meters. Either the ground beneath him was inferior, or he was losing tyre pressure. He's probably commented on it somewhere, but it's quite evident in the slo-mo replay.

This overall stage recap I enjoyed as well.

    Cool sound track, too.  ;)

Anyone know who the commentator is?

Flobikes is quite new - just this year - if I am not mistaken. Flobikes uses the ?? Fubu? Fubar? SOMETHING! feed, but is focused on cycling, and major races, exclusively. So they offer a cheaper package than Fubu. With less of other sports covered, of course.

I'm using some kind of DNS service to be able to watch Rai and so on. Seems like it (surprisingly) unblocks Flobikes as well then
