[2.2] Tour de Beauce
« on: June 06, 2018, 10:50 »
Tour de Beauce 13th - 17th June

The demise of Alberta and the sabbatical of Saguenay (due to Frau Merkel and co) means Beauce becomes the premiere stage race of Canada (of course in a way it was already).

Stage 1 — Saint-Georges - Saint-Georges (177 km)

Stage 2 — Lac Mégantic/Parc National du Mont-Mégantic (169 km)

Stage 3a — Saint-Prosper TT (20 km)

Stage 3b — Saint-Georges - Notre Dame Des Pins (77 km)

Stage 4 — Ville de Québec criterium (70 km)

35 laps.

Stage 5 — Ville de Saint-Georges circuit (122 km)

12 laps.

There are some small changes in terms of the stages from last year, but in essence the song remains the same.

    Competing teams:

    HOLOWESKO - CITADEL
    HAGENS BERMAN AXEON
    RALLY
    UNITEDHEALTHCARE

    INTEJA
    JELLY BELLY
    SILBER
    JLT CONDOR
    PROBACLAC/DEVINCI
    CANEL'S - SPECIALIZED
    INTERPRO STRADALLI
    303 PROJECT
    CCB FOUNDATION - SICLERI

    APPLEWOOD GARNEAU
    RIDE WITH RENDALL
    NCCH
    VELOSELECT - APOGEE

    CANADA
    QUEBEC

The field is a bit stronger than last year. However that's mainly down to the addition of a few extra foreign CT teams and not the increase in the number of PCT teams, as the new PCT teams all raced here last year in their CT guises.

Not official yet, but Tuft will likely be riding for the Canadian team.

    Ignacio Prado       MEX
    Efrén Santos        MEX
    Eduardo Corte      MEX
    Pablo Alarcón        CHI
    Oscar Sánchez      COL
    Román Villalobos   CR

The team hasn't been doing that much racing recently as far as I can see. Just Winston Salem and Gila in the past couple of months. Sanchez was the best performer in both events.

JLT have a race preview as well.

They omit stages 1 and 5 from their "key stages" list, but these two have been crucial the past couple of years.

I notice that #jlt haven't raced Beauce before - so they may not know that.

The last local rider I highlighted at Beauce (David Drouin) came to a sticky end, so let's hope things go a bit differently for Guillaume over the next few years.

    Final start list:

I think you'll agree that there are a lot of potential winners.

Some of the lesser heralded names that I will be keeping an eye on for various reasons include Gee, Zukowksy, Newkirk and the Rugg-meister.

The past couple of years the break has won this first stage and the overall winner has been in the break both times.

Not a surprise that it falls to Rally to do the donkey work. 70km or so to go.

Cheyne, Clarke and Roberge have bridged. Santos dropped from the break after picking up the KOM points.

    Gap around 30 seconds.

The three bridgers then attacked and held a very tenuous gap almost to the finish, but it was not to be.

It's probably no coincidence that the three teams on the podium were all represented in the break of the day and could take things easy for most of the stage.

Oliveira has been dropped (intentionally I'd guess) and the gap is ~2 minutes.

That Whitehouse was "big in Japan" (well, the UCI Asia Tour). Good to see him "over here" a bit this year.

The first break of the day was not to the liking of UHC as Revard was involved, but the second one had nobody of concern and it was the Canadian National team who used their numbers advantage to secure the win.

    http://www.tourdebeauce.com/fr/archives/2018/james-piccoli-remporte-le-tour-de-beauce-2018

Just like last year it was all change with Piccoli and Whitehouse making big jumps to the top of the GC. The break never got more than ~2 minutes on the peloton and nearly got brought back at one point when it dropped to 15 seconds, but UHC were having to do a lot of work responding to attacks and on a very attritional course they ran out of numbers and energy to reduce the gap back down enough.
