2018 Nationals Prediction Game
« on: June 21, 2018, 15:40 »
It's time again for the much-beloved Nationals Prediction Game!

We've seen four five editions of it already (2017, 2016, 2015, 2014 & 2013), so this is the fifth sixth year running where we join each other in hunting down startlists, race routes, and profiles and put our minds to work in predicting who will win their country's championship and the accompanying right to wear a jersey in the national colours for the year that follows - one of the great things in cycling.

The rules
- To enter, simply send me a PM with your predictions (or post in the thread if you don't care about others stealing making good use of your expert picks). You can quote this post (remove the quote code if you want, but that's not strictly necessary) and simply write your prediction behind a given country's flag and the ITT/RR distinction.
- In order to give everyone a chance to enter, I've left tomorrow's championships out of the game (*lt *pl *pt *es ITTs).
- As we've learnt in past years, CQ's race calendar isn't always 100% correct. Because of that, I have double-checked with the calendar of La Flamme Rouge, always taking the earlier date if there was a discrepancy. Also, La Flamme Rouge have collected many of the championships' courses, so a look there to check who could reasonably win a RR is a good idea. If a country's championship is moved forward and held earlier than first thought, no points will awarded for this race. If it's held later, points will be awarded (as long as the results are in on Monday 2 July at noon CEST).
- If you get a RR champion right, you'll get 10 points; if you're the only one to predict that country's champion, 20 points.
- As ITTs are often very predictable, there are less points to be earned here - you get 5 points to predict the champion, 10 points if it was a unique pick.
- You don't have to hand in all your predictions at once – but in order to count, you will have to make your predictions before 23:59 CEST on the night before any given race. E.g., for the *ca RR champs (held on 23 June), the entry must be posted before 23:59 CEST on 22 June.
- You're welcome to make your entries in stages, only posting your predictions for the next day(s).
- The final ranking will be based on all results available on Monday, 1 July, at noon CEST. In case of a tie, the player with more unique picks wins.
- The winner gets bragging rights for a year.

Extraordinarily, we get two weekends of national championships this year.
The first of those is done and dusted, and there have been a couple of surprise winners - and some not-so-surprising winners.

With four correct predictions including one unique prediction (*cz Cerny) on Sunday, Leadbelly takes an early lead with 60 points, followed by Flo who was the only one to back *pl Kwiatkowski at 45. The rest of the field is together at 20 points each.

But with 16 ITT and 18 RR champions still to be found in the coming days, nothing has been decided just yet.

Note that this table is not sorted by points, but by order of entry:

Nobody had Fominykh anyway, so it doesn't change anything.

    Neither do today's other results:
We all tipped either Tom Dumoulin or Jos van Emden for *nl ITT - Tom D. didn't start, and van Emden was almost two minutes slower than the winner.
And in *ch ITT, we all tipped Stefan Küng, earning everybody five points. :D

Not all of the results from Wednesday-Friday are in yet, but here's an update:
Flo almost closed the gap to Leadbelly by being just that bit better at picking the ITT winners. Josedin also did well, a.o. he was the only one to put his trust in Martin Toft Madsen - and was rewarded with 10 points for that. He's now third.
The rest of us languish around at 40-45 points ... but there's much racing still to come.

Also, a heads-up: Since I will be leaving for the long and arduous trip to Sibiu Sunday afternoon and won't arrive there until Tuesday[1], it may well be a while until I can post the final update.

For whatever reason, the *it ITT champs aren't scheduled to be hosted this week, contrary to what we thought. So that one drops out of the competition too.

For what it's worth, Flo was the only one not to pick Moscon - she had Ganna.

    Yeah, that wasn't clever. :P

In my defence, I read a preview that stated the course was harder than it looked, and looking at the results it definitely seems to have been a hard race. Viviani is just in amazing shape! But if I hadn't changed I'd have had 20 points :angry :o

Lutsenko in Kazakhstan? Nah, it's always some nobody that wins there
Roux in France, FDJ posted a lot about him in the past days, almost like he's their leader? Nah, this is really a Vichot parcours
Mathieu in NL, he said he'll try to make the race and he'd be an awesome champion? Nah, best go with the obvious choice

Don't worry Flo. I've only got a couple right so far today (one could be unique), so you might only need 3 or 4 non-unique winners to overtake me.

Neilands and Bazhkou for me. I've got a feeling that you could be the only one with Ackermann, so I'd need both of mine to be unique (very unlikely).

We could be jumping the gun of course. With so many outsiders winning, there is the potential for someone like Josedin (or Fus if he cheated) to make a big jump.

I think both could be unique, Neilands not as likely though. But you're right, we have to wait for the official results ;)

    *drumroll*
Here we are: The 2018 NPG final results!

First of all, the *hr RR was held a week earlier than thought and so drops out of the game ... but nobody had picked the winner anyway.

Sunday's road races saw a couple of unique picks winning (three countries), some popular choices that had been picked by three or more of us (four countries), and a surprisingly high number of countries where nobody picked the winner (eight countries).

AG got 20 points for *at Pöstlberger, Leadbelly was spot-on with *by Bazhkou, and Flo hit the jackpot with *de Ackermann.

In the end, only five points separate first and second place.

The full standings are as follows:

I had Ackermann at first, but then I switched it to Greipel because Greipel is very good at winning them.
Now Ackermann is, too ... :D
