From your review it seems clear why Mathieu is not interested in road cycling. It seems like he approached this stage as a 200km long cyclocross, all out right from the start and running out of fuel in the final climb. It's the illustration of his own opinion that staying in a peloton for 5 hours is too boring for him. He's gonna keep crossing and MTBing for a long period, I think.  ;)

(not having watched the stage, I may be totally wrong, though)
