The Italian Autumn Classics (Il Lombardia)
« on: September 15, 2018, 07:31 »
The Italian Autumn Classics

At the far end of the season, Italy takes center stage as the season’s final dramas play out on the southern side of the Alps. It's time for the Italian Autumn Classics again.

The 112-year old Il Lombardia is the centerpiece of the fall calendar — the last of the five monuments and the only one not held in spring. Lombardia is the star, but it is supported by an undercard rich in Italian cycling history and local flavor that is relatively undiluted by the sport’s global push. During the weeks before Lombardia, northern Italy hosts another number of classics ranging from UCI 1.HC to UCI 1.1 status - among them Milano-Torino,  which debuted in 1876, 16 years before La Doyenne, which makes it the oldest race on the professional calendar.
[1]

DATE STATUS RACE
15.09.      1.1      #med   Coppa Agostoni - Giro delle Brianze
16.09.      1.1      #flat   Coppa Bernocchi - 43è GP BPM
19.09.      1.1      #med   Giro della Toscana - Memorial Alfredo Martini
20.09.      1.1      #med   Coppa Sabatini - Gran Premio Città di Peccioli
22.09.      1.1      #flat   Memorial Marco Pantani
23.09.      1.1      #med   Trofeo Matteotti
06.10.      1.HC      #mountain   Giro dell’Emilia – Granarolo
07.10.      1.HC      #med   Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli
09.10.      1.HC      #med   Tre Valli Varesine
10.10.      1.HC      #mountain   Milano-Torino
11.10.      1.1      #med   Gran Piemonte
13.10.      WT      #mountain   Giro di Lombardia

Same as in the past years, the races are framed by the two Coppas and Lombardia as the highlight in the end, which should attract good starting fields to races like the Giro dell'Emilia again. The Giro del Piemonte returns though (after taking a break to host the Nationial Championships in 2017) to complete the "Trittico di Autumno" on the final weekend.

The Trofeo Matteotti is a new addition, moved over from July, while the Giro della Toscana is shortened to one day again. The overall "Challenge Toscana Memorial Alfredo Martini" it forms together with the Coppa Sabatini classification still exists though, just adding up the points from two days instead of three now.

    Coppa Agostoni & Coppa Bernocchi

Saturday, September 15th and Sunday, September 16th

Racing starts today with the two Coppas

The startlist looks ok'ish, apart from the fact that Moscon returns to racing. For Eddie Dunbar it will the first race with #sky Team Sky

It's live on PMGSport and Rai Sport on from ~15:00.

Just a little thought about change. Namely the changes in coverage available. I've never even heard of either of these Coppas. I am not complaining! :hitch

Well now, let's have a look at the story so far: Moscon is back and has a point to prove. And, except for Lobato, the races have all been won by Italians.

What happens if a WT team wins the thing? Wildcard given to best PCT? Or (more likely) no wildcard given at all, with all wildcards distributed at sole discretion of Giro organiser?

The Wild Card then goes to the 2nd in the standings. Only if the 2nd is a WT team as well, it goes back to the organizer

    Giro dell’Emilia – Granarolo

    Saturday, October 6th

The season of Italian fall classics continues on Saturday with the beautiful Giro dell'Emilia

The race often comes down to a "sprint" for the win from a select group up the final climb to San Luca...

...but also attacks on earlier laps (Visconti with one to go in 2017, Bakelants with two to go in 2015) were successful in recent years.

    Gran Premio Brumo Beghelli

    Sunday, October 7th

    Next one today, GP Beghelli

Often a good race for the strong sprinters (Colbrelli, Trentin, Modolo are the names that come to mind) but with not too many around, also a late attack stands a chance, like last year, when #astana Luis Leon Sanchez won solo

...and in the same fashion as Sanchez last year, this time #trek Bauke Mollema attacked from a late breakaway group within the final couple of kilometer, just keeping the chasing peloton behind till the line

Mollema is basically throughout racing for results since doing the Tour de Suisse in June (followed by the Tour, San Sebastian, Vuelta, the Worlds and now the Italian classics) so I didn't expect him to have too much left in the tank tbh... but he proved me wrong :cool

    Tre Valli Varesine

    Tuesday, October 9th

The peloton moves over to Varese tomorrow for Tre Valli Varesine. Same as in past years, the race mostly takes place on the circuit of the 2008 World Championships...

...but the finish sees some changes this time. Instead of staying on the "short circuit" till the line, the riders leave it after 6 laps and move over to the "long circuit"...

...which features the Morosolo climb (1,7k @7,5%), instantly followed by the Casciago climb (1,8k @4,9%). On from the top there are still 5 flattish kilometers to go till the finish, so in the end it shouldn't change too much about the character of the race, which is usually one for attacking riders, but also offering super strong sprinters a chance to win.

Tre Valli Varesine also is the final race of the Trittico Lombardo. With the two Coppas now taking place way earlier - and no diamond handed out for the overall winner anymore - it has lost a bit of its fashion though tbh. Here are the standings at the moment:

    C.A. C.B. TVV
          #sky   MOSCON Gianni      15                        15
          #bahrain   COLBRELLI Sonny            15                  15
          #direct   TAARAMÄE Rein      12                        12
    1.      #androni   BELLETTI Manuel            12                  12
          #bahrain   GASPAROTTO Enrico      10                        10
    2.      #bardiani   SIMION Paolo            10                  10
    3.      #bardiani   WACKERMANN Luca      8                        8
    3.      #nippo   LOBATO DEL VALLE Juan Jose            8                  8
    5.      #amore   FICARA Pierpaolo      6                        6
          #sky   BASSO Leonardo            6                  6
          #vorarlberg   ORRICO Davide      5                        5
    6.      #androni   FRAPPORTI Marco            5                  5
          #fortuneo   DELAPLACE Anthony      4                        4
    7.      #uae   TROIA Oliviero            4                  4
          #sunweb   HIRSCHI Marc      3                        3
          #gazprom   PORSEV Alexander            3                  3
    8.      #gazprom   ROVNY Ivan      2                        2
    8.      #bardiani   ALBANESE Vincenzo            2                  2
    10.      #androni   GAVAZZI Francesco      1                        1
          #ccc   KOCH Jonas            1                  1

The final start list isn't available yet, so it could be even less contenders with points left. Maybe #androni Belletti or #nippo Lobato have a small chance to hang on and score enough points to take the overall, but most likely the one who takes the race will also win the Trittico, I guess, no matter if he is among those who scored points yet or not.

The race will be live on *it Rai 3 and *eu Eurosport at 15:15, and it'll be the first one for #movistar Alejandro Valverde in the #rainbow jersey

it seems like some changes to the rules were made last year, with the top 15 getting points (15-1pt), and for the overall classification riders needed to participate in all three races. No idea if this is still the case though

Edit: if this really is the case, this is what the current standings would look like (I think - Bardiani is not confirmed yet for tomorrow)

it was another great race today, with lots of attacks in the final part, including big names like Majka, Buchmann, Latour, and so on. On the final lap Uran, Pinot and Woods managed to bridge the gap to an earlier attack group in front, but ran out of time to still drop #trek Toms Skuijns, who turned out to be the quickest on the line

Hey! I know, it's not one of the ITALIAN autumn classics, but how about this year's Paris-Tours? I LOVED it! What a race! Screw all those whiny riders whinging - including Thomas DeGendt. This was good action! This is EXACTLY what we need in today's age of continuous televising of a race! And it matches up with the Italian fall classics so exactly!

    GREAT STUFF!

it was a great race indeed - but Paris-Tours was always (or most of the times, at least) good over the past years. And it's one of the few French one day races that really stands out, and still has (or had) a character, so I'm actually not quite sure if such a drastic change of the parcours really is the right decision or not.

    Giro del Piemonte

    Thursday, October 11th

Placed between the climber's classics, it's time for the sprinters to step up today in the Giro del Piemonte

"This edition of the race features a course that will pass by many of the great houses of the Savoia family, the former Kings of Italy, in Racconigi, Pralormo, Agliè, Venaria Reale, Rivoli and Stupinigi. The route has been specifically designed to celebrate these important monuments, which are amongst the region's highlights.

The route is mainly flat with some climbs and descents around Turin. From the start at Racconigi the route goes up part of the Superga hill from Chieri towards Chivasso – on regular roads, sometimes twisty and featuring short climbs and descents – and then becoming flat up until Agliè. The feed zone around the middle of the course (km 89-92) in Ozegna is followed by another flat section through Venaria Reale and Rivoli. Here the roads, in the city centers, have more bends and undulations, with some narrow points. After Rivoli the route runs on wider roads until the finish straight in Stupinigi"
, is what it said about the race in the RCS press release.

in 2016 the race was won by Giacomo Nizzolo, and in 2017 it was Fabio Aru who took the glory when the Italian National Championships took place in Piemont - both times on way harder courses though.

This time, it looks like a big sprint is almost inevitable - but surprisingly, most teams didn't even bring a sprinter. Sure, #ef Modolo, #bahrain Colbrelli, #academy Sbaragli, #bardiani Guardini, #androni Belletti, #astana Minali or #nippo Grosu are around, but for a HC race with 12 WT teams, that's not really a breathtaking lineup, to be honest.

The race is live on *it RaiSport, *eu Eurosport 2 and *fr l'Equipe on from ~15:00

I didn't notice it yesterday, but this little twitterclip actually shows #rainbow Valverde being dropped before the reverse Uran in London maneuvre, not because of it.  :)
