Direct Energie after a wildcard. Pasqualon was saying the other day that Wanty would like one too.

Some have reported that Superman will be there too, but I can’t see it. Surely the Tour, with fewer TT km is the better bet for him.

Yates will be back again. :cool

I'm amazed. I presumed they'd send Adam to the Giro and give Simon a bash at the Tour, and maybe Chaves for the Vuelta (if fit).

Seems a bit nonsensical to me.

Maybe he wants to win all the GTs in a row. Won the Vuelta, now for the Giro ... and if he wins that, he'll also do the Tour.

Looks very much like Roglic will be joining the Giro party too, as Kruijswijk and Groenewegen will be the leaders at the Tour.

I predict that at least two of the eight will have to be replaced due to illness, injury, and whatnot. There's just no way that a GT roster will stay absolutely unchanged for 5+ months.

Jungle Bob will return. I think he should be a bit more ambitious. A top-ten would be par for the course as he's already done it twice. Go for the birdie and a top-five.

Looks like Aru has been forced to fall short at the Giro, rather than falling short at the Tour.

Bardiani look by far the least attractive team for a wildcard for the Giro.

Androni, Nippo VF, Neri and ICA look far better on paper.

I know the race isn't usually on paper apart from Het Nieuwsblad.

neither of them has too much to offer at the moment, to be honest. But "Tuttobici reports that, with the impending rule change [of two foreign teams likely to join the party on from 2020] in mind, RCS Sport is leaning towards awarding wildcard invitations to all four Italian Professional Continental squads, meaning that Androni-Sidermec would be joined by Bardiani-CSF, Nippo-Vini Fantini and Neri Sottoli-Selle Italia-KTM"

That's what I would expect, although ICA have much more chance of doing something than most of the others. Bardiani particularly weak.

What the article doesn't mention is that while the top-2 ProConti teams would be offered a wildcard, they're not obliged to take it.

After all, not every ProConti team wants to do all three GTs ... arguably even some WorldTour teams don't, but they have no choice in the matter.

Looking at the current CQ team ranking (since there is no team ranking from the UCI, inexplicably), the race for the top-2 will be between #cofidis, #wanty, #direct & #academy.
Cofidis has regularly done both Tour and Vuelta, and they may want to send a 'B team' to the Giro to get GT experience. They also have a large enough roster to absorb three GTs.
Wanty, on the other hand, has only done the Tour in recent years. Would they really want to do all three? This is possibly even more true for Direct Energie.
Israel Cycling Academy would probably jump at the chance to do all GTs.

All this said, since teams would know they're auto-invited by mid-October the previous year, there's then time to use that fact to wiggle more money from sponsors and in turn sign a couple of extra riders in order to have a large enough squad.

The sprint field won't be quite as loaded as the GC one but Demare, Viviani, Ackermann and Ewan isn't bad to be going on with.

    Gaviria too I gather.

haven't read an update on that, but in December Gaviria said that he'll mainly eye the Tour, with the Giro as a potential preparation race only

The 2017 Giro d’Italia points jersey winner confirmed that the Tour will be his focus next season, with the Italian race possibly on the cards as a warm-up.

'We are waiting [to decide my schedule] because some directors wanted me to do 10 days of the Giro to prepare for the Tour,' he said.

'Others said it was better to go to the Tour of California to prepare, so we’re waiting for the right path to the Tour, which is our biggest goal.'
