    Uno-x development team  #unox 2019

    Rider birth year
    Kristoffer Skjerping 1993
    Markus Hoelgaard 1994
    Jonas Abrahamsen 1995
    Kristian Kulset 1995
    Torstein Træen 1996
    Syver Westgaard Wærsted 1996
    Erik Nordsæter Resell 1996
    Torjus Sleen 1997
    Tobias S. Foss 1997
    Lars Saugstad 1998
    Sindre Kulset 1998
    Iver Skaarseth 1998
    Andreas R. Leknessund 1999
    Jonas Iversby Hvideberg 1999
    Martin Bugge Urianstad 1999
    Ludvig Fischer Aasheim[1] 1999
    Anders Skaarset[2] 1995
     1. to join from club racing later in the year
     2. currently trainee with #cofidis

I put birth year on the riders because the team clearly wants to communicate thatthey are for young riders to develop. A few older riders have been added to help the younger riders develop. They like to mention this as they rightfully like to people to know that their team isn't really comparable to conti teams from other countries that often include a bunch of older riders. It is more comparable to the development teams that some of the WT teams have hosted.

From the way that #unox list the team I think they expect Skaarseth to ride for another team next year.

The management listing is quite impressive too
    Jens Haugland (General Manager)
Kurt Asle Arvesen (General Manager Sports)
    Stig Kristiansen (Sports Director)
    Leonard Snoeks (Sports Director)

    Arne Gunnar Ensrud (Head coach)
    Espen Aareskjold (Coach)
    Lars Skjønnhaug Holm (Coach)

While most of the list is well known, put a mark on Espen Aareskjold, whose transfer to unox has lead to an exodus from #joker,  indicating many riders have a strong confidence in the way he works with them and don't want to swap.

The teams model is different from #joker. In Joker-Icopal the team is a business and it gets revenue from it's sponsors including Joker (the lesser brand of Norway's major retailer of food and everything you need every day). The #unox Uno-x team is actually a wholly owned subsidiary of Uno-x (an energy retail company). The tighter link between the team and the money enabled Uno-x to step in and fill lots of economic gaps opening all across cycling Norway due to the ~10 million Euro hangover from the Bergen and Lillehammer world championships. In the short term, this has rescued:
    • The U23 team Norway
    • The Norwegian cup races, especially the one with the climbs
    • Tour of Norway
    and created
    • The Uno-x development weekend

...I think there are a few things I forget. In short, they almost run the sport here in Norway now, and while that is good in the short perspective, complete dependency on a single sponsor should read at least yellow(!) light for the future of the sport. The CEO of Uno-x has the same last name as two of the riders on the team, what happens if they both quit or when they are too old to be "development" prospects anymore?
(I don't think UNo-Xs motives are that personal:  it's the CEO but not the owner, and the investment in the team is large enough to require some kind of backing by the board of this small-medium size energy retail business. However, I believe it helps...)

These concerns aside, I clearly wish them the best of luck for 2019  :cool

If Anders Skaarseth does stay that will mean they have 17 riders later on in the year. Normally that wouldn't be allowed unless one of the riders is a multi-discipline rider. Are any of the other 16 riders trackies or MTBers?

    and created
    • The Uno-x development weekend

...and you can add the Dare Bikes Development Team to that. An ad hoc team of young Norwegian riders from clubs that will get experience in Italy/France riding more mountainous races.

It was a rather timely announcement as earlier on today their was a blog post on procycling.no (obviously with the WC fresh in the mind) bemoaning the failure to produce climbers and that the high ranking in the junior and U23 Nations Cup didn't give a true reflection of the country's strength. It seemed rather harsh tbf. I don't think there are many mountainous Nations Cup races, certainly in comparison to the number of sprint/classic type races.

...and you can add the Dare Bikes Development Team to that.

I deliberately kept it out as it is not crystal clear what this is all about. Ideologically it looks like an extension of the Heroes of Tomorrow programme that already sent some young Norwegians to terrorize events like the Etape du Tour just because there were some meters vertical to be gained. Until recently that was all but a young finnish rider featured in the Heroes of Tomorrow race (every year in parallell with one of the Arctic race stages) some three years ago and this  year he won the bronze in the U23 Worlds Road Race plus the KOM of all classes ( a very unofficial classification) for fastest climb up the Igls in Innsbruck, and that still stands, even after Sunday's racing  :o .

People-wise it seems like this will involve some of the management related to #unox but this time, it is a different sponsor! Dare bikes already sponsor #unox so it is not a long shot, but there is a difference and please,  it is got to be more than just the brothers not being in the right age group. It looks more and more like they are the two most important riders in Norway, but I don't believe it is that simple.

Maybe Ariesen finally got a contract with a bigger team? He certainly deserves it.

One of the, if not the most promising (South) African talent(s) currently.
Interesting move to go through the French Conti scene.

Who is the guy with the Twitter handle @Sykkelsjefen? Old man Skaarseth, or Jens Haugland?

I was always under the impression that it's Haugland, and that he's the real driver of the whole thing. In which case it should be longer-lived than simply Ivar's and Anders' career.

Skaarseth stays and I believe Idar Andersen is also missing from that list. So that will actually give 18 riders from mid-year when Aasheim joins. They must have some MTb-ers in there, no?

Some MTBers wouldn't be enough. They'd have to be top-100 (or top-150, or top-200, can't remember exactly) in the UCI rankings to count as specialists.

Not sure how Konig is still in the team. :slow
he signed a three-year-deal when he re-joined the team.

Quickstep is in more or less a similar situation with Vakoc, and Lefevere said this year he paid his full wage although he didn't have to - but not sure how it's generally handled, or how bullet proof a contract is in the case of lengthy injuries

edit: okay, there's something about it in the joint agreement:

    Quote
A rider prevented temporarily from carrying out his activity for no fault of his own, owing to illness, injury or accident, shall be entitled to his full (100%) remuneration during a period of 3 months and 50% of his remuneration during another period of three months without the amount to be paid being less than the minimum salary stipulated in article 10.

This entitlement shall come to an end at the end of his disablement or of the contract. It is renewed for a fresh disability having another cause than the previous one.

The entitlement to the salary shall be borne by the team, after deduction of insurance benefits for loss of income to which the rider may be entitled for this risk. Where applicable, the rider shall do everything necessary with a view to recourse against responsible third parties.

Industrial disablement shall be duly established. The team may require the rider to undergo a physical examination administered either by a doctor designated by mutual agreement or by a medical officer accredited according to the applicable social security system or, in the absence thereof, a doctor designated by the president of the UCI Medical Commission at the request of the first party to take action.

not sure what happens after those six months though (which have long passed for König). And for Vakoc the joint agreement doesn't apply anyway as it "shall not apply to riders employed by a team but who do not participate in international road races"
