Update #6: Popchu in rarefied air

This was a busy week in the game, with several smaller races spread out across the calendar. As we hit mid-February and the game starts to take shape, there will be less upheaval in the standings, and indeed we see a successful defence of the top spot in the overall. So, how did the week shake out?

    This Week's Top Scorers

    Rank   Team   Points this week
    1   Popchu   342
    2   PeterB   319
    2   Josedin   319
    4   Joelsim   310
    5   del1962   301

Popchu takes the week with a pretty good haul of 342 points. Their team’s most profitable take was from the high-altitude 2.1 race in Colombia, where the combination of Nairo Quintana (8 teams, 70 points), Egan Bernal (26 teams, 60 points) and Alejandro Osorio (16 teams, 21 points) was buffered by points from Kittel and Boom in Spain, and notably 58 points from unique pick Lutsenko, who just may be picking up a few more points this week. Second place is a tie between PeterB and Josedin, which is somewhat astonishing considering their vastly different lineups. Josedin is one of the few Kittel-less teams in the game, muscling to the podium this week on the strength of unique pick Miguel Angel Lopez’s 21 points, as well as a handy 91 from Ivan Sosa (3 teams), 60 from Bernal, 28 from Hodeg and a scattering of other points. PeterB, on the other hand, has the popular Kittel and Boom, as well as Trentin, and a few other Colombians in Quintana and Henao. In a week with so many small races, all kinds of combos can work to get you to the top.

    This Week's High Movers

    Rank   Team   Up/down
    1   Popchu   (+20)
    2   Joelsim   (+18)
    2   laarsland   (+18)
    2   Josedin   (+18)
    5   trackstand   (+17)

A similar lineup here, with Popchu taking the double, moving up 20 spots. There’s a logjam for second, for Joelsim (not to be confused with the aforementioned Josedin) and laarsland tying Josedin to make the podium.

    Green Jersey Competition

    Rank   Team   Total
    1   just_some_guy   95
    2   MADRAZO   73
    2   Googolplex   73
    4   TheArt   68
    5   Popchu   57

This competition has a bit of a quieter week at the top, with only Popchu getting points in the top 5, adding to a previous 12 points with the 45 for the win to nab 5th overall. Notable achievement further down is AupaPyama, who has scored points in four consecutive weeks, but not more than 16 points in a single week, so their team is a bit off the pace in 8th overall, but still an impressive achievement.

    Top 10 Overall

    Rank   Up/down   Team   Points
    1   (-)   MADRAZO   1265
    2   (+1)   TheArt   1214
    3   (-1)   just_some_guy   1195
    4   (+2)   Squire   1163
    5   (+3)   Amis_Velo   1157
    6   (+5)   Falze   1133
    7   (-)   yoyokt   1126
    8   (-4)   Blues in the bottle   1111
    9   (+9)   del1962   1090
    10   (+2)   Otoxiep87   1083

MADRAZO enjoys the view from the top once again, defending the lead at the top with a solid week of 208 points. TheArt and jsg switch places, with TheArt inching closer to the top, gaining 26 on MADRAZO. Lots of jumping around a bit lower, as Falze, del1962, and Otoxiep87 jump into the top 10, while PremierAndrew, Londonpat and Googolplex fall out. We are still at the point of the season where the cumulative totals of the top teams can be eclipsed by some single weeks to come (eg. a GT GC week), so don’t fret if you’re nowhere near the top, and be happy but don’t get too comfortable if you are.

The hits keep coming this week with Oman, Algarve, Andalucia in the HC category, and Haut Var just for good measure. And then – what’s that? – is Opening Weekend just around the corner?

Venturini 3rd on stage 4 in Oman. So far this year, he has 48 points compared to 21 at this point last year. If he continues like this, he'll be an excellent pick :shh ;)

    UAE Tour
    Vincenzo Nibali
    Remco Evenepoel
    David Gaudu
    Ilnur Zakarin
    Marcel Kittel
    Max Walscheid
    Kristoffer Halvorsen
    Fernando Gaviria
    Matteo Moschetti

Quite a strong sprint lineup I feel, and it seems like this will be the first race for Moschetti as designated sprinter. Also Gaudu seems like he could be FDJ's GC leader. Potential for points is there but not too many rare picks.

    Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
    Ivan Garcia Cortina
    Stefan Küng
    Edoardo Affini
    Luke Rowe
    Harry Tanfield
    Edward Theuns
    Loic Vliegen

More names than usual for me in the Flemish classics, but no certainties. At least many are rare picks that have shown good form already this year.

    Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne
    Clement Venturini
    Ivan Garcia Cortina
    Nacer Bouhanni
    Stefan Küng
    Edoardo Affini
    Robert Stannard
    Harry Tanfield
    Luke Rowe

Venturini, Bouhanni and maybe Garcia are my cards if it ends in a sprint. I'm not expecting too many points here.

Plus I'm hoping a couple of my riders will be at the French weekend races but no startlist available yet.

Update #7: There's no CQ Game climber like armchairclimber

It was a week with a lot of GC outcomes, but like last week, alot of the top spots were taken by rare or unpicked riders, which made the week not as huge as it could have been for some game participants - there were only 13 teams scoring over 300 points on the week. But certainly there were a good few gamers who should be happy with their haul.

    This Week's Top Scorers

    Rank   Team   Points this week
    1   armchairclimber   410
    2   comodoro   386
    2   tobydawq   386
    4   MADRAZO   362
    5   Mellow Velo   352

If you perused the popularity tab of the spreadsheet last week, the thought probably crossed your mind that the top of the leaderboard would likely include most of the 7 teams that got the 212 points from Tadej Pogacar's fantastic breakout in Algarve. And indeed, that's the case. armchairclimber claims top spot with almost half of their team's points coming from non-Pogacar sources, such as Sam Oomen (79 points, 2 teams) and Giulio Ciccone (66 points, 4 teams). In a very tight fight behind, we see a tie for second place between comodoro (Pogacar of course, but also 56 points from Alexander Vlasov and 50 from Trentin) and tobydawq (no Pogacar but an impressive showing by a committee of relatively rare picks including 150 points from SK Andersen, and 30-50 from the likes of Trentin, Kung, Spilak, Gibbons and Oscar Rodriguez). Interestingly, comodoro would have had sole possession of 2nd place if Louis Meintjes hadn't somehow managed to lose two points this week (did he get reclassified down a spot in the national RR or something?)

    This Week's High Movers

    Rank   Team   Up/down
    1   armchairclimber   (+51)
    2   Mellow Velo   (+36)
    3   comodoro   (+33)
    4   will10   (+32)
    5   Jakob747   (+29)

A similar look at the top here, with armchairclimber moving up a massive 51 spots, rocketing up the table. Mellow Velo gets a moment on the podium for this one, almost solely due to Pogacar, Oomen and Gaviria's points.

    Green Jersey Competition

    Rank   Team   Total
    1   MADRAZO   95
    1   just_some_guy   95
    3   Popchu   73
    3   Googolplex   73
    5   TheArt   68

Things tighten up here as well, as MADRAZO has another strong showing, parlaying 22 weekly points into a tie for first place with jsg. Meanwhile, Popchu gains 16 points to get into another tie, for third place, with Googolplex.

    Top 10 Overall

    Rank   Up/down   Team   Points
    1   (-)   MADRAZO   1627
    2   (+3)   Amis_Velo   1411
    3   (-1)   TheArt   1387
    4   (-1)   just_some_guy   1376
    5   (+9)   Salvarani   1362
    6   (+2)   Blues in the bottle   1358
    7   (+3)   Otoxiep87   1340
    8   (+19)   tobydawq   1329
    9   (-5)   Squire   1312
    10   (+13)   Popchu   1304

MADRAZO's team outgains everyone around with 4th on the week, and now has a commanding 216 point lead on second place, which is now occupied by Amis Velo. Some big leaps into the top 10 this week from Salvarani, tobydawq and Popchu, while yoyokt, Falze and del1962 have to say bye to the top tier for now.

Update #8: Leadbelly sings the Opening Weekend Blues

The end of February comes with a sharp contrast for the cycling fan, going from watching riders ride across unpeopled desert landscapes in the last of the preseason hot races, to watching other riders jostling for position before the Molenberg clad in cold weather garb on Opening Weekend. The creation of a third-tier of WorldTour races has helped this week in the CQ points front as well, with the UAE Tour and Het Volk both attaining that level with the changes a couple of years back. The result is a week with a decent amount of points on offer.

    This Week's Top Scorers

    Rank   Team   Points this week
    1   Leadbelly   620
2   Blues in the bottle   513
    3   Roubaix   506
    4   Riverside   484
    5   Salvarani   475

It's a dominant win for Leadbelly this week, by over 100 points! Leadbelly has a rare team overall but their most popular rider, David Gaudu (57 teams) was also the biggest point-getter this week at 144. This was complemented by solid performances all around from Wilco Kelderman, Lilian Calmejane, Matteo Badilatti and James Knox (94, 80, 71 and 64 points respectively, and all picked by 10 or fewer teams). Throw in solid points from mildly popular picks De Plus and Trentin and  you've got a recipe for a win. Blues in the bottle has a great week too, albeit 100 points back, getting 45 or more points from Gaviria, Ewan, Contreras, Knox and De Plus, on top of Gaudu's points. Roubaix slots into third as the only other team over 500 points, with of course Gaudu being the tide that floats all CQ boats this week, and some similar names as above plus Senechal and Barguil.

    This Week's High Movers

    Rank   Team   Up/down
    1   Leadbelly   (+54)
    2   Roubaix   (+34)
    3   Riverside   (+28)
    4   Akuryo   (+25)
    5   EvansIsTheBest   (+23)
    5   GP Blanco   (+23)
    5   merengues   (+23)

No surprise that Leadbelly's huge week sees a huge leap in the standings, and Roubaix moves up a spot by virtue of Blues in the bottle being high enough already that there wasn't much space to move (more on that below). Riverside rounds out the podium here, supplementing more common riders with the likes of Groenewegen (2 teams) and Keukeleire (5 teams).

    This Month's Top Scorers

    Rank   Team   Points this Month
    1   Leadbelly   1201
    2   Nicosix   1167
    3   Salvarani   1127
    4   Riverside   1056
5   Blues in the bottle   1032

Leadbelly's big week translates into a big February, topping the monthly charts at 1201 points. As nearly half of that was from this week, beyond this week's contributors there isn't much to mention, mostly Bernal, Ciccone and Lietaer (and a bunch more from Trentin). Nicosix had a great top-heavy month to get 2nd, with great performances (>80 points) from 7 of their top 8 most expensive riders (A. Yates, Kelderman, Gaviria, Trentin, Gaudu, Kittel - only Nibali didn't pick up many), and Salvarani tops 1100 for third on the month.

    This Month's High Movers

    Rank   Team   Up/down
    1   Leadbelly   (+77)
    2   Riverside   (+63)
    3   armchairclimber   (+52)
    4   Nicosix   (+48)
    5   vladimir   (+38)

Leadbelly gets the four-way clean sweep!! This week's huge rise was only part of a month-long upward trend, moving up 77 spots on the 110-spot table. Riverside doubles up on the 'high mover of the week/high mover of the month' table as well, whereas last week's top scorer armchairclimber goes about halfway up the table over the course of February.

    Green Jersey Competition

    Rank   Team   Total
    1   just_some_guy   95
    1   MADRAZO   95
    3   Nicosix   73
    3   Googolplex   73
    3   Popchu   73

The board is the same as last week save for Nicosix somehow gaining exactly enough points to create a three-way tie for third overall behind the two-way tie for first. I'm guessing one of the teams in third place will finish in 5th this week to get exactly 22 points and go into a tie for first.

    Top 10 Overall

    Rank   Up/down   Team   Points
    1   (+5)   Blues in the bottle   1871
    2   (+3)   Salvarani   1837
    3   (-2)   MADRAZO   1819
    4   (-2)   Amis_Velo   1794
    5   (-1)   just_some_guy   1741
    6   (+10)   Nicosix   1663
    7   (+5)   Londonpat   1653
    8   (+5)   yoyokt   1647
    9   (-)   Squire   1629
    10   (+5)   shalgo   1591

Some real shakeup in the overall this week! Blues in the bottle parlays a great week on top of an already high overall standing to leap into first place. It's a close battle though, as Salvarani also had a great week and lies 44 points behind, while former top dog MADRAZO is only 18 points behind Salvarani. Big jumps into the top 10 from Nicosix, Londonpat, yoyokt and shalgo, while we lose TheArt, tobydawq, Popchu and Otoxiep87.

This week is not quite as packed, with just La Samyn today before the weekend gets exciting with Strade Bianche and the beginning of Paris-Nice.

I could be wrong, but I think this is the first time I've ever won a week. There have been a few mentions and close calls (a slow week when I had a Paterski-De Maar 1-2 in Norway springs to mind) over the years. It feels good to finally get the big one!

    My team for Strade:
    Vincenzo Nibali
    Stefan Küng
    Alberto Bettiol
    Edoardo Affini
    Robert Stannard
    Nicola Conci
    Matteo Moschetti
    Fernando Gaviria

Looked a bit underwhelming initially, but I've just read a quote by Küng that he is aiming for a top-10, so that's good ;)

King Küng scored 20 points for me, third time this week he got caught behind the decisive split despite having good legs.
And Bettiol was my only one in the first group :fp

Update #9: All Eyeballs on one team this week

With this week being a bit of a lull (relatively speaking; of course we got Strade Bianche, Le Samyn, a couple of smaller one-days and the start of Paris-Nice, so we're doing fine), we didn't see any stratospheric scores, as less than half the field (43 teams) topped 100 points. But there were a few notable scores stringing together some less popular picks.

    This Week's High Scorers

    Rank   Team   Points this week
    1   Eyeballs Out   351
    2   armchairclimber   273
    3   greenedge   268
    4   ThePirate81   256
    5   AlyKaptan   255

This week sees it all come together for Eyeballs Out, scoring a fantastic 351 points. This is largely due to a long-overdue pro win for the talented Florian Senechal (80 points, 7 teams), and a big win confirming last year wasn't a fluke for Max Schachmann (145 points, 6 teams). Add 36 each for Montaguti and Boom and some dribs and drabs elsewhere, and it's a runaway win. armchairclimber likely won't be disappointed with second given that their team won a couple of weeks ago, and this is another fine performance, Schachmann and Van Aert being the main drivers there. greenedge finishes just behind in third, rounding out the podium.

    This Week's High Movers

    Rank   Team   Up/down
    1   Eyeballs Out   (+40)
    2   greenedge   (+31)
    3   armchairclimber   (+22)
    4   Yellow Knight   (+21)
    5   Sestriere   (+20)

We are still at the point in the season where a 350 point week can jump you up over a third of the table, and Eyeballs Out takes full advantage to do the double this week, jumping 40 places. 2nd and 3rd are switched on this ranking from the last, but both greenedge and armchairclimber have some good jumps to go with their good scores.

    Green Jersey Competition

    Rank   Team   Total
    1   just_some_guy   95
    1   MADRAZO   95
    3   armchairclimber   80
    4   Popchu   73
    4   Googolplex   73
    4   Nicosix   73

armchairclimber parlays this strong week on top of the 45 points for winning a couple of weeks ago into a spot on the overall podium of this competition. The other spots in the top 5 remain tied.

    Top 10 Overall

    Rank   Up/down   Team   Points
    1   (-)   Blues in the bottle   1934
    2   (+1)   MADRAZO   1915
    3   (-1)   Salvarani   1905
    4   (+1)   just_some_guy   1894
    5   (-1)   Amis_Velo   1871
    6   (-)   Nicosix   1701
    7   (+3)   shalgo   1697
    8   (+3)   TheArt   1689
    9   (-)   Squire   1685
    10   (-2)   yoyokt   1682

This week wasn't enough to flip the overall standings, as Blues in the bottle holds onto a slim lead after ascending last week. MADRAZO moves back closer to #1, but it's quite close in the top 5. Lower down, TheArt returns to the top 10, while Londonpat drops out. This week, of course, we have the two big opening-season overlapping WT stage races. With a ton of riders in this game in each of those, there should be some significant scoring going on.

Update #10: Weekly and Overall Rankings feel a Pop

Whatever your gauge is, by the time Paris-Nice winds up, the season has most certainly officially started. Big points on offer for a 2.WT1 race, and it's won by a rider that is picked by more than a few people here (but not THAT many - 26 teams), so that is almost certainly going to shake things up significantly in this game.

    This Week's Top Scorers

    Rank   Team   Points this week
    1   Popchu   659
    2   del1962   625
    3   Geraint Too Fast   607
    4   Leadbelly   600
    5   18-Valve. (pithy)   598

Week 6 winner Popchu gets another win this year with a very robust 659 points. If you thought that Egan Bernal's 274 points had something to do with that, well you'd be right. But even rarer pick (8 teams) Nairo Quintana's 213 points is a fine complement to that. Throw in Zakarin's 70, unique pick Lutsenko's 45 for the stage win in T-A, and that's mostly it for the stellar week. del1962 has a great week too with basically the same point-getters minus Lutsenko, while GTF clears 600 as well with the big two Colombians as well (I guess people who like one like the other - GTF has the same riders as above but was missing the 18 Gaviria points that the other two had).

    This Week's Top Movers

    Rank   Team   Up/down
    1   Geraint Too Fast   (+47)
    1   Eric10   (+47)
    3   Hugo Koblet   (+41)
    4   Leadbelly   (+38)
    5   18-Valve. (pithy)   (+35)

The aforementioned GTF is atop this chart, but is tied with Eric10, who just missed out on the top 5 of the other standings having Bernal and Haig rather than Bernal and Quintana. Game founder Hugo Koblet makes an appearance (and was also just outside the top 5 scorers), amazingly also with Bernal and Haig (the latter of which is only on four teams).

    Green Jersey Competition

    Rank   Team   Total
    1   Popchu   118
    2   MADRAZO   95
    2   just_some_guy   95
    4   armchairclimber   80
    5   del1962   75

A second weekly win vaults Popchu over the previous deadlock for first place in this competition, dropping MADRAZO and jsg to second. Popchu had been in a 3-way tie for 3rd with 73 points, but their team's win and del's 35 points for second place has changed that to a two-way tie for 6th, just off the chart.

    Top 10 Overall

    Rank   Up/down   Team   Points
    1   (+14)   Popchu   2258
    2   (-1)   Blues in the bottle   2140
    3   (-1)   MADRAZO   2111
    4   (+32)   del1962   2094
    5   (-1)   just_some_guy   2077
    6   (+1)   shalgo   2069
    7   (-4)   Salvarani   2050
    8   (-3)   Amis_Velo   2029
    9   (+35)   18-Valve. (pithy)   2011
    10   (+38)   Leadbelly   2005

There are... a few changes here. I guess the 26 teams that had Bernal and the 8 teams who had Quintana (at least 4 of them with both) really got a leg up on everyone else. Popchu absolutely launches up the charts, going from 15th place into 1st overall by over 100 points. The rest of the top 10 is some minor shuffling mixed with some crazy leaps. Aside from our new leader, del, 18-Valve and Leadbelly all jump over 30 spots into the top 10, while Nicosix, Londonpat, TheArt and Squire tumble out.

We've still got the overall of Tirenno to decide this week, as well as a glut of 1.HC races and - oh, what's this? Our first monument of the season!! Another fun week coming up!

Couldn't watch Nokere Koerse today so when I just checked the results I was a little disappointed to find none of my hopefuls in the top-20. And now I just saw a video of the final, and I see it was Walscheid and Moschetti who went down in the crash. Even more disappointed now :( I hope they and the others who crashed aren't too badly hurt. Moschetti gets 2 more chances later this week but Sunweb isn't sending a team to Bredene and Denain, this was a good chance for Walscheid to score some points.

Update #11: Teams Continue to Move up and Down a Googolplex Places in the Overall Standings

Spring is here, most riders are in action, and the hits just keep on coming. Tirenno-Adriatico GC points were up for grabs, as well as the first monument of the season, and 3 1.HC races. Last week we saw a team leap double digits into top spot and multiple teams have similar leaps into the top 10. Well, it's happened again!

    This Week's Top Scorers

    Rank   Team   Points this week
    1   Googolplex   803
    2   Object   760
    3   Nicosix   746
    4   Kryvo   677
    5   Lortnoc   627

Googolplex was tied for first way back in week 1 in January, but now surges back to have an outright win this week, cracking 800 points! How did their team get it done? Well, it would have been even more points if not for the 0.31 seconds that Adam Yates (241 points, 6 teams) lost out to Roglic on the T-A overall, so that's one big factor. Some decent points from more popular riders like Nibali (118 points this week) and Bettiol (103) and mid-popular like Halvorsen (84) and Moschetti (62) give a solid basis, plus some handfuls of a dozen or two from a few other riders. Object slides into second mostly on the backs of Yates/Nibali/Bettiol/Halvorsen and Van der Poel, who scored 140 points after a scary crash earlier in the week looked like it had scuppered his classics campaign. Nicosix, no stranger to this chart after winning in week 5, comes in third with a similar setup (sans VdP and Bettiol but with good points from Trentin and rare pick Sasha Weemaes).

    This Week's High Movers

    Rank   Team   Up/down
    1   Kryvo   (+38)
    2   EvansIsTheBest   (+30)
    3   Lortnoc   (+29)
    4   AlyKaptan   (+28)
    5   Nyssinator   (+25)

A different list here, as some of the last group was the rich getting richer (ie. they were already high in the standings). Here, Kryvo jumps up over a third of the table - 38 spots - as one of what must be a very few teams with both Van Aert and van der Poel (and the requisite Nibali and Bettiol). EITB shows up this week too (top contributor not already mentioned - Philipsen with 77 points), and Lortnoc gains a respectable 29 places to round out the podium.

    Green Jersey Competition

    Rank   Team   Total
    1   Googolplex   118
    1   Popchu   118
    3   Nicosix   103
    4   MADRAZO   95
    4   just_some_guy   95

Before last week, MADRAZO and jsg were tied for first place, with Googolplex, Popchu and Nicosix in a three way tie behind with 73 points. Since then, Popchu won last week, Googolplex won this week, and Nicosix got third this week, so the order is flipped. There's now a two-way tie for first, Nicosix 15 points back in 3rd, and a two-way tie for 4th between teams that were tied for 1st before last week. Pretty crazy flipping of the standings. Speaking of crazy flipping of the standings...

    Top 10 Overall

    Rank   Up/down   Team   Points
    1   (+10)   Nicosix   2726
    2   (-1)   Popchu   2721
    3   (+23)   Googolplex   2588
    4   (-2)   Blues in the bottle   2586
    5   (-2)   MADRAZO   2558
    6   (+22)   Object   2532
    7   (-1)   shalgo   2515
    8   (-)   Amis_Velo   2480
    9   (+5)   TheArt   2471
    10   (+7)   bminchow   2412

After rocketing up the standings last week to storm the top spot, Popchu drops down to second to Nicosix, whose team has their own meteoric rise to claim top spot by a mere 5 points. The week's winner Googolplex moves from 26th to 3rd, and Object has a similar rise to 6th. The re-entry into the top 10 of TheArt and bminchow means that 5 of the top 10 have entered this week, while we lose Salvarani, del1962, just some guy (who I think has been in the top 10 all season maybe?), 18-Valve and Leadbelly.

Phew! What are we gonna get this week from the star-studded Catalunya, the, uhhhh, One Day of De Panne, and E3?

And Stannard in the lead in Coppi e Bartali and Hamilton and Cattaneo also in a good position ahead of the hilly stages :win

But only Zaka :cheer flying the colors for my team in Catalunya :o
