Crash Bang Wallop: 2019 Main Version

    GAUDU David
    BARBIER Rudy
    TRENTIN Matteo
    PLANCKAERT Baptiste
    BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley
    DE PLUS Laurens
    LAMBRECHT Bjorg
    VAN ASBROECK Tom
    COSNEFROY Benoit
    LIETAER Eliot

These are the more popular ones. Bernal was on the team even before the Giro leadership news came out. He just has to avoid crashing as much and hopefully not do the Tour.

    KNOX James
I thought he would have been more popular after some late season performances at Montreal and Turkey. Should move up the pecking order at Deceuninck after all the outgoing transfers.

    STALLAERT Joeri
    Same reasoning as others

    KELDERMAN Wilco
Couldn't be bothered changing him after the news of him being Dumoulin's dom at both the Giro and Tour. Should still get opportunities anyway.

    TOLHOEK Antwan
    See a few posts above

    CIMOLAI Davide
    Ditto

    POLITT Nils
No love for Mr Leprosy? The one bright star at Katusha in 2018. Should be good for Classics and some stage races.

    CICCONE Giulio
Not sure actually he will be a great pick scoring wise, but in a bad Bardiani team he was there or thereabouts in a lot of races.

    MINALI Riccardo
    See a few posts above

    CALMEJANE Lilian
I had a lot of fun with Calmejane in my team in his debut year with Direct Energie where he was very consistent through the season. Plateaued a bit last year and some of the locals were questioning whether he was more interested in taking instagram pics with his other half than winning races. Fingers crossed that he's wised up.

    LIEPINS Emils
    Calendar should suit him.

    VALTER Attila
Impressive at Okolo Slovenska. Not sure there are too many climbers at CCC Devo other than him, so should get plenty of freedom.

    VAUBOURZEIX Thomas
    VAN NIEKERK Morne
Neither Vaubourzeix or Van Neikerk were initially on the team, but they were brought in after I messed up on Excel. Both are on French CT teams so they should give plenty of interest through the year, but I expect more from the South African than the Frenchman. The two riders they ended up replacing were Ewan and O'Connor - so no Aussie Nat points for me.

    NEILANDS Krists
    I just had to.

    BADILATTI Matteo
Bit surprised he was unique. Looked good at Hainan and in a team with very few climbing options he should get plenty of races where he gets complete freedom.

    CARVALHO Andre Rodrigues
Almost took him out after he signed for Hagens Berman, but I stuck with him.

This next lot could all be put under the same banner. CT riders for teams with lots of race days around the world. Should provide lots of interest. Most of them I would have forecast to been unique (and they all did) apart from Bazhkou who seemed a typical Geraint Too Fast pick and Dima who's praises were being sung by Jens Attacks.

    STEIMLE Jannik
    KUKRLE Michael
    BAZHKOU Stanislau
    VAN ENGELEN Adne
    BANZER Gordian
    DIMA Emil

    KUSZTOR Peter
I had 21 points left, so it must have been fate.

I was keen on picking him after his showing in spring but unfortunately got a bit too expensive at the end of the season.

I wanted to pick him as well but I fear he will not get too many opportunities at Trek.

    BETTIOL Alberto
    HOWES Alex
    LIETAER Eliot
    HOFSTEDE Lennard
    BOOM Lars
    KÄMNA Lennard

One unique pick this year. I think in the past I've had a few more than that and had I done proper diligience in picking my team it probably would have been no unique picks this time round

If only someone had mentioned in a previous years game thread the dangers of picking in a rush and including suspended riders

STALLAERT was involved in my complications to find a few extra I liked in the 30-50 space, not really sure if he gets enough of a role in a new team to score points. I think what got me over the line is the fact who else is in your team has never really stopped anyone in Belgium. I guess it was more important to convince myself SENNI wasn't going to hit 300+.

VAUBOURZEIX I'm kind of excited by (and CAÑELLAS SANCHEZ Xavier but he will probably be a dismal failure), how dare you steal a unique.

Update #1: Plenty of glory to go around

The first update in the CQ game is always a bit of a jumble, as it is comprised of the Aussie and New Zealand nationals, and pretty much nothing else (a couple of stages of 2.2 Tachira). Aussie riders are pretty popular in this game, so there is often some differentiation at the top. Not so this time. With the unheralded/unpicked trio of Frieberg, Harper and Meyer on the podium of the Aussie RR, there weren't even any rare picks in the big points. That resulted in a bit of a cluster at the top.

    This Week's Top Scorers

    Rank   Team   Points
    1   flashke   107
    1   Googolplex   107
    1   just_some_guy   107
    1   rote_laterne   107
    1   Total Package   107
    1   Wallenquist   107

Of the 21 teams who picked Luke Durbridge (who, unsurprisingly, are #1 through 21 on the rankings), six players also got 17 points from being among the 37 teams who picked Ben O'Connor. So, flashke (listed first by virtue of the alphabet), Googolplex, just some guy, rote laterne, Total Package and Wallenquist share first place in this inaugural week.

The Green Jersey competition is back this year - for those new to the game, it's just a weekly points system to reward teams that score high in the weekly rankings - the points are given to the top 15 finishers every week, and mirror the TdF Green Jersey points. The top 6 teams get an average of the top 6 points (45 for first, 35 for 2nd, then 30, 26, 22, 20), which works out to 29.666, which I rounded up to 30. So those are the standings for that competition as of now.

For the top 10 overall, it's those 6 with the asian in 7th (got 14 Callum Scotson points on top of Durbridge), then Carlo Algatrensig, Los Brolin and Tigerion tied for 8th (12 points from Jai Hindley).

This week is bound to be more spread out as the World Tour racing has started down under. We are off in the CQ game! Good luck everyone.

Update #2: Impeyrial Reign in Australia

We are off and running in the CQ Manager game, with the prestigious level 1 World Tour race Tour Down Under in the books. Just when it looked like some new blood might upset the established order, Paddy Bevin had an unfortunate crash, and the end results were virtually identical to last year - Porte wins on Willunga, Impey finishes close enough to take the overall. Porte keeping pace with last year's CQ haul will be welcomed by the 25 teams that chose him this year, and as once again no one has Impey (or Bevin for that matter), his points are the ones that most directly affect the game.

    This Week's Top Scorers

    Rank   Team   Points this week
    1   MADRAZO   486
    1   Amis_Velo   486
    3   just_some_guy   411
    4   Otoxiep87   408
5   Blues in the bottle   400

Despite some big team scores and differentiation on the tables this week, the top spot is once again a tie! There were three teams that took podium finisher Wout Poels, and two of them also had Porte. MADRAZO got those points plus ten finishing points from Bettiol and Durbridge, and Amis Velo got those points and finishing points from Rafa Valls and Lachlan Morton, leading to a tie at 486 points. just some guy ends up in third after tying for first last week - a great start to the season.

    This Week's High Movers

    Rank   Team   Up/down
    1   Amis_Velo   (+67)
2   Blues in the bottle   (+62)
    3   Poles & Co.   (+56)
    4   PremierAndrew   (+55)
    4   torcia_86   (+55)

Well, when ~50 teams scored no points in the first week and therefore were tied for something like 70th place, some points in the second week are going to bring about a big jump. We've covered Amis Velo above, but on this ranking game veteran Blues in the bottle leaps more than half the table mostly from Porte, but from a smattering of smaller points from an impressive collection including Ewan, Bauhaus, Mareczko, Hindley, and Miguel Flores picking up points in Tachira. Poles & Co. sneaks into third almost entirely on the back of Porte and Mareczko.

    Green Jersey Competition

It's rare to have a clear leader that has more than 45 points at this point in the season, but just some guy parlays the 30 points for splitting the lead last week into overall success by netting 30 more for 3rd place this week. MADRAZO and Amis Velo split the top this week and each get 40 points for it, but MADRAZO already had 3 points last week so gets 2nd overall on this ranking.

    Top 10 Overall

    Rank   Up/down   Team   Points
    1   (+10)   MADRAZO   576
    2   (-1)   just_some_guy   518
    3   (+67)   Amis_Velo   486
    4   (+33)   Otoxiep87   425
    5   (+62)   Blues in the bottle   412
    6   (+16)   yoyokt   408
    7   (+4)   Object   387
    8   (+3)   Falze   383
    9   (+18)   barmaher   382
    10   (+22)   bminchow   377

This early in the season there's obviously some volatility, and with last week's leading teams only getting 107 points, it was all up in the air with big World Tour points coming through. The podium is the same as the weekly standings, with just some guy holding off Amis Velo in the overall due to having said 107-point head start. This week mostly sees 2.1 action in Gabon, so it'll be a small update most likely, but good for teams that have sprinters on French PCT teams.

My wee team for San Juan:
    Mattia Cattaneo
    Remco Evenepoel
    Rudy Barbier
    Imerio Cima
    Fernando Gaviria

Gaviria, Cima and Barbier for the sprints, Cattaneo for some GC points hopefully. Eager to see how young Cima holds up in the sprints and if Evenepoel is the real deal :)

Update #3: Boni's Fast, Yo! Once Again.

It's likely that the 7 teams that put up 735 points for Andre Greipel thought this week in Gabon would be a nice little appetizer of him dominating the French CT calendar; although he did end up pulling out a stage at the end and getting 114 points, it was another sprinter moving down from WT level - one that cost about a third of the price - that ended up turning heads, as Nicolo Bonifazio dominated Tropicale Amissa Bongo to come home with 221 CQ points. This was, March 2015 aside, his biggest haul in a short span since he burst on the scene lapping up points in Hainan at the end of 2014 (which, I believe, was when I first used the above title for an update). He may only be on 9 teams, but players should beware that last year's 1st, 2nd and 4th placed teams all have him (as well as the winner from 2017), so he's a pick backed up with game pedigree. As no one has VIviani, there weren't any riders close to those points this week, and that shows up in the weekly rankings.

    This Week's Top Scorers

    Rank   Team   Points this week
    1   TheArt   414
    2   Jancouver   360
    3   ruvu75   326
    4   Googolplex   301
    5   tobydawq   290

After a sizzling debut season in the game in 2018, TheArt wastes no time getting on the board in 2019, garnering an impressive 414 points this week from a rare tandem of Bonifazio and another excellent early-season pick, Ryan Gibbons (also 9 teams), who got 4th in the Cadel race, not to mention 6th place points from Luke Rowe. Jancouver slots into 2nd with Bonifazio and Ewan (and a bit from the popular Gaviria for stage 1 of San Juan), and last year's winner ruvu75 takes the last podium spot with Bonifazio and Rowe.

    This Week's High Movers

    Rank   Team   Up/down
    1   ruvu75   (+65)
    2   AupaPyama   (+57)
    3   Jancouver   (+56)
    4   fauniera   (+54)
    5   Nicosix   (+51)

Still some big jumps, this being the third week and things getting sorted out. Very similar to the first list, with 2 of the 3 podium places the same. ruvu75 gets the win here, and not-mentioned-in-the-last-section AupaPyama gets 2nd overall through (who else) Bonifazio and a few scraps from other riders.

    Green Jersey Competition

    Rank   Team   Total
    1   just_some_guy   60
    2   Googolplex   56
    3   TheArt   48
    4   MADRAZO   43
    5   Amis_Velo   40

Already some stratification in this competition, and uniquely, no one is sitting on exactly 45 points, with the first two weeks having ties at the top, and TheArt having already picked up 3 points in Week 1. Their team, of course, picks up 45 for the win this week, and Googolplex adds 26 points to the 30 they picked up for the tied win in Week 1.

    Top 10 Overall

    Rank   Up/down   Team   Points
    1   (-)   MADRAZO   640
    2   (-)   just_some_guy   593
    3   (+31)   TheArt   590
    4   (+1)   Blues in the bottle   588
    5   (+18)   Googolplex   576
    6   (+6)   PremierAndrew   567
    7   (+6)   Squire   565
    8   (-4)   Otoxiep87   558
    9   (-6)   Amis_Velo   538
    10   (-4)   yoyokt   511

Despite middling weeks for the top 2 overall, there weren't enough points scored this week to dislodge them from the top, as MADRAZO stays on top by a decent margin and just some guy clings to second, while weekly winner TheArt rounds out the podium. Too much movement to sum up all the ups and downs in the top 10, but we see some early season presence from long-time game factors Blues in the bottle and Squire. San Juan is in full swing this week, but also in the southern hemisphere is the Herald Sun Tour. Aaaand... racing starts in Europe! The Mallorca races and GP Marseillaise may just be 1.1 races, but the opening of European racing is always a milestone in the advent calendar full of treats that is the early season calendar.
