Youth CQ Ranking Game 2019

Youth CQ Ranking Game 2019

Ciao fellow Veloroomies, welcome to the seventh annual Youth CQ Ranking Manager Game. This game allows you to showcase your knowledge of upcoming youngsters, and hopefully take a gamble on a couple of really young riders.
Originally this game was invented by mc_mountain, based on Hugo Koblet's CQ Ranking Manager Game, but I am organizing it this year.

Your task is to create a team with 12-15 riders at 1000 CQ points to get the best possible return.

1. How the game works

1.1. Duration
The season starts when the first race is held (Australian Road Cycling Championships 6 January 2019) and ends when the last major race (.1 or higher) is held. The winner will be crowned when the next update after the last major race (x.1) is out - submissions can be made to extend the season to include late season smaller races, should there be potential for them to affect the top placings. A victor can be declared earlier if there is no prospect of the leader being overhauled.

1.2. Updates
My aim is to have an update every 2 weeks. I would greatly appreciate some help from other participants. If you are interested in doing an update every now and then, let me know via PM!

2. On doping
Hopefully doping will have much less of an impact on this game, but the Main game rules will apply.

3.Submitting your team

3.1. How do I?
You pick between 12 and 15 riders whose combined value doesn’t exceed 1000 points and submit your team to me via PM (either on CN forum or on Velorooms forum). Please be sure to use the naming format as found on cqranking.com and only send me your riders' names, not their scores etc. Please also be wary of any spaces or other characters after your riders’ names. I will try to correct all mistakes but some could slip through.

Example of how to send in your team:
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
DE PLUS Laurens
MAMYKIN Matvey
etc...

3.2. Eligibility
Riders need to fit one of the following two main criteria
i) be a first year professional rider (of any age), be it at World Tour or Professional Continental team.
ii) be riding at Continental level or lower, born in 1994 or younger, without having previously ridden as a professional.

For clarity, riders should not have already ridden a full year as a professional at either World Tour or Professional Continental level – riding as a stagiaire does not prevent selection. Riders who have signed their first pro contract in August (or later), are considered for the purposes of this game as no different from stagiaire riders.

If you are unsure about the eligibility of a rider, feel free to PM me.

In previous years, the rules included an “encouragement” to include riders from several age categories, this encouragement has been scrapped to avoid any confusion.

Deadline
You can submit your team as of right now. The deadline for submission is January 4th, at noon i.e. 12:00 CET(http://www.timebie.com/timelocal/centraleuropean.php) so 12 hours after the main game deadline.
After this deadline, team submissions will no longer be accepted. I will then process all teams, which includes checking eligibility. If I encounter an issue with your team, e.g. you've included the same rider twice, you are over budget or a rider you selected is not eligible, I will contact you via PM and give you the opportunity to correct the mistake before January 5th 20:00 CET. If after this deadline, you haven't yet gotten back to me, or there is still an issue with your team, I will:
i) in case you are over the budget, remove a rider to bring you under the budget. This will be the cheapest available rider on your team whose removal will bring you to or under the budget;
ii) in case you selected too many riders, remove the cheapest available rider from your team;
iii) in case of ineligibility, remove the ineligible rider.

I would like to ask the participants to delay the big reveal of their teams until after the January 5th deadline.

Best of luck to all! :)

    Hello friends, please note that Harm Vanhoucke is not eligible because his contract started 31/07 according to CQ ranking. You could argue "from 31/07" could also mean "starting on 01/08" but I have to be strict and draw the line somewhere.

    So the official deadline has arrived and we have 30 teams entered, plus two more revised teams to come. The revision deadline is 20:00 CET tomorrow, but in the meantime I might accept some more entrants at my discretion, it'd be cool to get a couple more teams in. So if you're still interested, hesitate no more and throw together a team!

    Check if your team is on the list in the 3rd post, guys

    Crash Bang Wallop: 2019 Youth Version

    WT

     #trek MOSCHETTI Matteo
     #lotto DEWULF Stan
     #uae MUÑOZ LANCHEROS Cristian Camilo
     #lotto BYRIEL IVERSEN Rasmus

    Moschetti and Dewulf should pick up some decent sprint points. Munoz? If he's good enough for Matxin, he's good enough for me. Byriel seems to be a bit of a jack of all trades (master of none) and likes to get in breaks - I'm thinking TDG-lite.

    PCT

     #corendon VAN DER POEL Mathieu
     #euskadi LOPEZ-COZAR JAIMEZ Juan Antonio
     #nippo OSORIO CARVAJAL Alejandro
     #androni MUÑOZ GIRALDO Daniel Felipe
     #manzana SAENZ BALLESTEROS Nicolas

    Just had to go for MVDP. A lot of the enticing eligible prospects in WT cost an arm and leg, so that made the decision easier to go all in on the Dutchman. A trio of PCT Colombians as well. Saenz probably the least known, but he's been riding for Lizarte in Spain and so has some exp of Euro-racing already.

    CT

     #seg ARENSMAN Thymen
     #seg PEAK Barnabas
     #seg HOOLE Daan
     #leopard MAAS Jan
     #polartec OLDANI Stefano
     #aevolo ROJAS CAMPOS Gabriel Francisco

    SEG-tastic. Maas (good all-rounder) is ex-SEG too. Went for Rojas as he's a bright prospect, but also because I ignored the NA tour in my main team.

    1/2 correct. Needed a zero pointer, don't know too much about him either (apart from some injury trouble in 2018)

    Here's mine.

    VAN DER POEL Mathieu
    EVENEPOEL Remco
    OSORIO CARVAJAL Alejandro
    MUÑOZ GIRALDO Daniel Felipe
    PIDCOCK Thomas
    PARET-PEINTRE Aurélien
    AFFINI Edoardo
    GREGAARD WILSLY Jonas
    HONORE Mikkel Frølich
    PEAK Barnabas
    HÄNNINEN Jaakko
    ARENSMAN Thymen
    MARCHETTI Moreno
    THIJSSEN Gerben
    GONZALEZ LOPEZ David

    Swap your Moschetti for a Marchetti and who knows which Munoz will do best. And you've got to have a Lopez, even if it isn't a Superman.

    Hello, I'm Cordi from the Spanish forum Parlamento Ciclista.

    I've been participating in some of your games last years through the cyclingnews forum. But I lost my account and couldn't register again, so this year I had to ask a friend for my forum to send the teams in my name.

    Just now I realized that there was another forum throug we could send the teams, so I inmediately registered here. Cheers and good game for everyone!

    My team:

    VAN DER POEL Mathieu -> He's the key rider of the team, no doubt. I'm a big fan of him, since the first moment I fell in love with cyclocross, in 2014. Back then, he was just starting his proffesional career. I remember well the first race I saw him on tv, was in Gieten, his debut in a big pro scenario, and he won defeating Van der Haar.

    A lot of success happend since then. First the awesome duels with Van Aert. Later, his dominance. Now is a crazy machine. And he exports success to every discipline he tries. He's going to smash the roads. Is going to be a learning-WT-level-season, but he's going to make results because he's freaking good.

    ---
    Well, so I spent a very big part of my money with Van der Poel. What can I do then? Put the rest of the money in cheap young talents. The kids I think are going to dominate the u23 stage races in 2019. If some of them become the big names of the u23 scenario, his cqr points are going to grow so much.

    BAGIOLI Andrea -> Italy, 99

    HAYTER Ethan -> G. Britain, 98

    LEKNESSUND Andreas -> Norway, 99

    CHAMPOUSSIN Clément -> France, 98

    RIES Michel -> Luxembourg, 98

    ARENSMAN Thymen -> Netherlands, 99

    DONOVAN Mark -> G. Britain, 99

    GALL Felix -> Austria, 98

    LOPEZ PEREZ Juan Pedro -> Spain, 97

    OSORIO CARVAJAL Alejandro -> Colombia, 98

    -----

    And finally, to fulfill the team, some zero pointers:

    HERNANDEZ GOMEZ Brayan -> Revelation of the colombian calendar in 2018. Good climber, classe 97. I expect him to debut in Europe with his team (Strongman), do well and then go with the national team to the big u23 stage races.

    BYRIEL IVERSEN Rasmus -> I haven't got a good knowledge of the Italian amateur ranks, but I saw this guy won some races. But he didn't bright in the UCI level races (only remember a good breakaway in the Giro u23). But damn, he's in a WT team that seems to trust in him, and costs 0 points. Worth the shot.

    VACEK Karel -> Obvious, best climber of the junior ranks if not...

    EVENEPOEL Remco -> Freaking obvious.

    ... So the average age is less than 20 years. Baby team!

    Right, some data:

    We have 38 participants and in total 163 unique riders selected. The most popular rider, Remco Evenepoel, appears on 35 teams. The next most popular rider, Alejandro Osorio Carvajal, is on less than half of the teams (18). It appears there were very few 'obvious picks' this year.

    Ludwigzgz has the most popular team this year, followed closely by Wallenquist, with a popularity score of 188 and 185 respectively. The best popularity score possible is 220.

    The oldest rider selected is 34-year old Peter Kusztor on LukasCPH's team. The youngest team is Jon_Ezeitza's baby squad with an average age of less than 19, but Josedin, LosBrolin, Karaev1 and CORDI also went for a sub-20 team.

    The most expensive rider selected is Mathieu van der Poel, who is on 10 teams, and the most expensive unique pick is Aksel Nommela for DJW.

    More popularity data in the next post

    This is the most popular team possible:

    KANTER Max   200   10
    STANNARD Robert   172   13
    MOSCHETTI Matteo   144   17
    DEWULF Stan   101   14
    HONORE Mikkel Frølich   76   16
    DE DECKER Alfdan   76   10
    HÄNNINEN Jaakko   48   11
    ARENSMAN Thymen   46   11
    AFFINI Edoardo   41   11
    OSORIO CARVAJAL Alejandro   17   18
    MUÑOZ LANCHEROS Cristian Camilo   13   14
    SCOTSON Callum   7   11
    EVENEPOEL Remco   0   35
    VACEK Karel   0   17
    BYRIEL IVERSEN Rasmus   0   12

    Like Max Kanter and Alfdan De Decker, Mathieu van der Poel and Giovanni Lonardi were also selected 10 times, but Van der Poel was too expensive to include, and the combination of Kanter and De Decker brought us closest to the max budget.
