Do you look down between your legs?
« on: July 10, 2012, 20:23 »
Or do you always know what gear you're in without looking?

i generally know, but i think riding a cross bike might be part of that, wider gear ranges, or is it narrower.

I look at the moment because I'm still getting back into cycling.

I used just to go on feeling though, at least I did once I'd gotten rid of the downtube friction levers that used to decant my chain into the spokes regularly.  ;D

Mmm I have a commuting/rain hybrid and a decent road bike. I know where I am on the hybrid but maybe I'm just not doing enough mileage on the road bike to get a good feel for it. The other thing I have no idea about is on the road bike is where I'm going to end up when I change chainring, i.e. how many sprockets to change too. Sounds a bit crap when I type it.

I only look down when I'm hanging on a climb, and pray that I have a sprocket left (so nice to look down and see a 28t when things get steep!).

Nice to have it there definitely!

but I always feel a small sense of defeat when I change down to it. Something about no longer being in charge. Once I'm on the biggest sprocket, the hill's in charge.

I do not look down and never have any idea which gear i am in

i seem to spend a lot of time in that annoying space that is the middle. so often i want to change down but am in big ring at front and running out of gears at back, or am changing up and in the small ring at front and running out of gears at the back. find it hard to settle. but i am old and unfit

there is nothing worse than the feeling of going to change down one more and finding that is it. has only happened once this year so far

as for not using the largest sprocket, have you read 'The Rider'

I look down when I'm really suffering, but the hill's never in charge :p 3rd biggest sprocket is the minimum! :p

I recognise all that. No. What's that about?

The rider is my favourite cycling book of all time. Based on made up amateur french race from the perspective of one of the main riders. goes into the suffering of cycle racing, the mentality, what is going through his head as he rides

definitely recommend reading, is great for anyone who rides and will understand and great for trying to get your family to understand you

    has some great quotes like

'Racing is licking your opponent's place clean before starting on your own'

but the one i was thinking of has a monologue in his head about one of his heros and after a race they said his 19 was completely clean, meaning he never used it. there is a whole section about wanting them to say at the end, his 19 was clean. he refuses to change down as using the last gear would be letting the climb win.

    read it

52 - 36, i have no idea what i use now but definitely used to be 52 - 39 and 11-21 at the back
and i used to get sh*t for having a 39 instead of a 42. was also a pain for junior races as they used to limit the gears to just 42 on front.

50-34 for me and definitely wouldn't be able to get up the local lumps and bumps without 28 at the back.

But when I replaced the chainrings on my commuter bike I put on a 52 ring because I used to get frustrated at having nowhere else to go. But now it's there, I don't think I ever use it with the 11 on the rear except on the very rare occasion I manage to get in the draft of a lorry or something.

yeah I'd love a 52-39 but where I bought my bike it used to be a compact and when I noticed that and asked for it to be changed he only put a 52 on it... Would be too much of a fuss to change it to a 39 - 52 with the cranks ....

I have a triple. Shame on me. Now who'll throw the first stone? ;)

52-40-30, with 11-25 in the back.
Almost never use the 30 chainring in the areas I normally ride, but I made good use of it on this year's holiday in Switzerland.
Will post some pics in the appropriate thread later.
