Ciclismo Cup 2019

Yesterday the Lega del Ciclismo Professionistico has announced all Italian races taking place in 2019:

For the former "Coppa Italia", which turned into the Ciclismo Cup in 2017, this means that the schedule for this year will be exactly the same as in 2018:
February 17th      1.HC      Trofeo Laigueglia
March 10th      1.HC      GP Industria & Artigianato
March 27th-31st      2.1      Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali
April 22nd-26th      2.HC      Tour of the Alps
April 28th      1.1      Giro dell’Appennino
July 23rd-28th      2.1      Adriatica Ionica Race/Following the Serenissima Routes
September 14th      1.1      Coppa Agostoni – Giro delle Brianze
September 15th      1.1      100° Coppa Bernocchi – 43° GP BPM
September 17th-18th      2.1      Giro della Toscana – Memorial Alfredo Martini
September 19th      1.1      Coppa Sabatini – Gran Premio città di Peccioli
September 21st      1.1      Memorial Marco Pantani
September 22nd      1.1      Trofeo Matteotti
October 5th      1.HC      Giro dell’Emilia
October 6th      1.HC      Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli
October 8th      1.HC      Tre Valli Varesine
October 9th      1.HC      Milano-Torino

The only difference is, that the Adriatica Ionica was moved from June to July, and both this race, as well as the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, will be one day longer than in the past.

I had wondered where the Adriatica Ionica Race was going to fit as the slot it had last year didn't exist with the tour returning to it's usual slot.

Probably about as important and 'serious' as all those post-Tour crits, only that it's post-Giro. ;)

    Trofeo Laigueglia

    Sunday, February 17th

The 56th edition of the Trofeo Laigueglia was presented today. It will take place on the same lumpy course as last year, when #teamit Moreno Moser took the victory with an attack from a select group with about 10k to go:

    Finishing Circuit:

The number of WT teams in the race has doubled from one (Ag2r) to two (Ag2R and FDJ), and (apart from more or less the usual suspects) also all four new Italian Conti teams were invited to participate in the opener of the season on home soil:
    • #nippo Nippo – Vini Fantini Faizanè
    • #fdj Groupama – FDJ
    • #ag2r AG2R La Mondiale
    • #teamit Nazionale Italiana

For #riwal Riwal Readynez it will be the first race as as a PCT team, by the way.

    https://cyclingpro.net/spaziociclismo/continental/ciclismo-cup-2019-niente-wildcard-per-il-giro-2020-la-riforma-blocca-tutto/

There is unlikely to be a Giro wildcard for the winner of the Ciclismo Cup this year. Not 100% confirmed as RCS are waiting on the UCI to formalize the 2020 auto-wildcard regulations.

    Gran Premio Industria & Artigianato

    Sunday, March 10th

The 42nd edition of the GP Larciano was presented on Saturday. It still goes by the same pattern as usual, with 4 laps on a flat circuit first, and then 4 more on a hilly one.

There are some slight changs on the flatter parts, but (apart from some minor changes in distance) the profile should still look like this:

with the race likely to be decided over the final lap:

Last year a group of 5 established on the climb and #bahrain Matej Mohoric took the win with a an attack on the descent. The other 4 were caught again and it came back to a ~25 men sprint for 3rd, so also a sprinter with good climbing skills stands a small chance to win the race - although it doesn't usually happen.

It'll certainly not be the same winner as last year though, as Mohoric's #bahrain Bahrain team is not around this time. But prominently placed in the calendar (just one day after the Strade Bianche), there'll nonetheless be a strong selection of teams around:
    • #mitchelton MITCHELTON SCOTT
    • #katusha TEAM KATUSHA ALPECIN
    • #ef TEAM EF DRAPAC CANNONDALE
    • #movistar MOVISTAR TEAM

I only watched the final 15k or so, which saw #bora Maximilian Schachmann and #androni Mattia Cattaneo breaking clear from an unusually large group, and keeping a small margin over the descent down to the finish.

It didn't look like the most entertaining edition to be honest, but if you want to have a look yourself, the whole replay of the race is available on pmgsport.it

Schachmann had looked strong in Strade Bianche already but suffered a mechanical at the worst possible time, thereby dropping out of the lead group. It didn't took him long to recover from that disappointment :cool

Next up is Coppi e Bartali in 2 1/2 weeks time.

    Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali

Wednesday, March 27th till Sunday, March 31st

The Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali was presented today, "combining tradition with innovations".

The parcours seems to be more on the traditional side, starting with a sprint stage as well as a split-team TTT on day one again (after a one year off using a normal TTT), before heading over to more hilly terrain, surrounding a sprint stage "flat as a billard table".

    27/3 - Stage 1a: Gatteo › Gatteo (97.8k)

    27/3 - Stage 1b (TTT): Gatteo a mare › Gatteo (13.3k)

    28/3 - Stage 2: Riccione › Sogliano al Rubicone (140k)

    29/3 - Stage 3: Forlì › Forlì (166.2k)

    30/3 - Stage 4: Crevalcore › Crevalcore (171.4k)

    31/3 - Stage 5: Fiorano Modenese › Sassuolo (153.4k)

    ~pdf Settimana Coppi e Bartali / Roadbook

The race is one day longer than usual though, so instead of two days of climbing we'll have three of them.

That's not the only innovation though: for the first time (as far I can remember), apart from the usual evening highlights on Rai, there'll also be live coverage of the race on *it PMGSport, *usa Flobikes and *eu Eurosport Player. :win

"Following a philosophy that protects Italian cycling" the organizers "have paid particular attention to the Italian Continental teams, which, in cycling of today, unfortunately have only few opportunities to compete in high-level events."

So although the interest among the teams to participate in the race is usually pretty high - allegedly last year 45 teams sent in their application - 4 out of 8 Italian Conti teams were invited, plus those two quasi-Italian ones registered elsewhere (apart from all four Italian PCT teams of course):
    • #sky Team Sky. Rosa, Elissonde, S. Henao
    • #sunweb Team Sunweb: Roche, Haga
    • #mitchelton Mitchelton Scott: Albasini, Meyer, Hamilton
    • #ef EF Education First: Bennett
    • #movistar Movistar Team: Bennati, Betancour, Landa
    • #wallonie Wallonie Bruxelles: Lietaer
    • #cajarural Caja Rural Seguros RGA: Malucelli
    • #arkea Team Arkea Samsic: Bouet, Feillu
    • #bardiani Bardiani CSF: Maestri
    • #androni Androni Giocattoli Sidermec: Belletti, Cattaneo, Montaguti
    • #academy Israel Cycling Academy: Hermans, Plaza
    • #riwal Riwal Readynez: Quaade
    • #neri Neri Sottoli Selle Italia KTM: Visconti, Bongiorno, Velasco, Zardini
    • #axeon Hagens Berman Axeon: Almeida, Bjerg
    • #nippo Nippo Vini Fantini Faizanè: Canola, Santaromita, Lobato
    • #teamit Nazionale Italia: Finetto, Mosca, Plebani
    • #gazprom Gazprom Rusvelo: Boev
    • #strongman Coldeportes Bicicletas: W. Munoz
    • #cccdevo CCC Development: Brozyna
    • #biesse Biesse Carrera: Piccot, Ravanelli
    • #sangemini Sangemini Trevigiani MG Kvis: Scartezzini, Totò
    • #beltrami Beltrami TSA Hopplà Petroli Firenze: Castano, Fiaschi
    • #colpack Team Colpack: A. Bagioli, Covi, Toniatti
    • #amore Amore & Vita Prodir: Celano
    • #giotti Giotti Victoria: Stacchiotti, Zurlo
Let's see if anyone can challenge #amore Celano
