In the chat box, I pondered just how long it's been since a Tour de France winner stood on the podium at Il Lombardia.

I couldn't resist the research. As it turns out, it's been forty years!

Along the way, I uncovered just how rare a feat it is. First I went all the back to WWII, then couldn't find a reason not to explore the entire history of both races.

So without further ado...

2019 - Egan Bernal 1st in TdF; 3rd in Lombardia

1979 - Bernard Hinault wins both
1978 - Bernard Hinault 1st in TdF; 3rd in Lombardia

1974 - Eddie Merkx 1st in TdF; 2nd in Lombardia
1972 - Eddie Merkx wins both
1971 - Eddie Merkx wins both

Then another big gap in time

1949 - Fausto Coppi wins both

The pre-war:
1938 - Gino Bartali 1st in TdF; 2nd in Lombardia

And that's it! (Although I'm glad to be corrected if my research turns out to be flawed.)

But winning the Tour de France and placing at Il Lombardia in the same year turns out to be an extremely rare event, reserved only for the most legendary of riders. Winning both even rarer still.

And Bernal is only 22-years-old.
