    One reason could be if the money for their wages comes from government funds (in some convoluted way).
    But even so, it sounds strange: Surely if the new team agrees to fund their wages themselves, the government would have no say? This is Hungary, not North Korea.

    Weird.

    it seems to be some kind of deal between Kometa (Fetter has a contract with them for 2020), Androni and the Hungarian Cycling Federation (MKSZ), to secure some Hungarian participation in the Giro.

    Apparently the MKSZ has big influence in the hand-out of one wildcard, so it sounds like Savio wants to play it safe

    It was just the wording of the initial TuttoBiciWeb article and the teams "submitting a request" for the transfer that was baffling.

    Probably just a Google Translate inspired version of Chinese Whispers. Hungarian ----> Italian ---> English and some of the initial meaning gets a little lost.

    James Shaw #swift --> #riwal

    Two years in the WT with Lotto Soudal, didn't get a new contract, returned to the UK to race for SwiftCarbon. 5th overall in Yorkshire this year. Good puncheur/climber, getting a second chance at the pro level.

    Decent signing. Probably not the guy to get them much closer to a 2021 Tour wildcard, but definitely a good addition.

    decent signing, yeah. If I had the choice, I'd have picked up Thwaites instead though, especially given the enormous amount of (mostly Belgian) semi-classics Riwal is usually participating in.

    Good point. Maybe they're getting Thwaites too, just announced later?[1]

    Though for chasing a Tour wildcard, getting someone who is at least slightly useful in the mountains makes sense. With Shaw, Lunke etc., they can go for some sort of result in an ASO stage race - Paris-Nice, Volta a Catalunya, Dauphiné - which is generally required before you're considered for a Tour invite.

    Stetina: this is a transfer, of sorts! Also a sponsorship thing, but I figured here was best.
    Stetina chooses gravel over Worldtour
    Some of you may recall I've mentioned watching the elder Stetinas race, back in the day. And, racing against one of them in a Masters Nats one year. Of course, I never got to actually SEE him that day, since he was in the front, and I was doing well to stay deep in the pack.

    So, just like Phinney, I was enthused to see the latest generation of Stetinas take to racing. Unfortunately, he's mostly been domestique quality, but at least of the better sort. This announcement, though, could be a real signal of a shift in racing attention in the US. I would not be surprised, and would probably be interested, in seeing TV coverage of these gravel races. Follow Lachlan this past year, I thought, was good, overall, for the sport.

    Hideto Nakane #nippo --> #delko

    Third Japanese signing after Oka and Masahiro Ishigami (AVC Aix-en-Provence, #nippo stagiaire).

    ...and #4 (and final):

    #trek Fumiyuki Beppu --> #delko Team Delko Marseille Provence

    https://teamdelkomarseilleprovence.com/fumiyuki-beppu-rejoint-le-team-en-2020/

    he even terminated his contract with Trek to join Delko

    https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/beppu-leaves-trek-segafredo-a-year-early/

    They keep on bringing the gang together btw, same as Goncalves and Jules, Beppu started his career with the team. Over the past years, it has not been an overly successful approach though

    probably, yeah and I guess the Japanese sponsors were looking for a more high-profile signing as well, while he also didn't mind to get some chances for himself after ages of being a pure domestique.

    edit: and Beppu still has the jersey from 2002 btw, so it seems to be a team somewhat close to his heart indeed ;)

    My guess would be that the two-year bit of the deal swung it for Corendon because I can't believe that IKA didn't offer him some sort of contract after his late season showing (unless ofc he had signed before that run of form).

    Anyway they're building a strong team. The rumours are that a couple of Brits will complete the team - Richardson and xxxxxx?

    Certainly appear to be bringing in more guys with experience at the top level. My information several weeks back, not named or confirmed,  was 1 from Jumbo, 1 from Quick Step, 1 from Sunweb, 2 from Roompot and 2 more Brits. Plus more recent discussion of Modolo and Sbaragli.

    Nothing is confirmed yet I think from the team, but the names that have been widely linked were De Tier, Vakoc, Vervaeke, Leysen and Riesebeek (which fits in with those teams). Townsend might just qualify as a "Brit" in their definition. He'd deserve a shot at a higher level.

    a bit obscure to see them heading to France (potentially, in Battaglin's case), but both are probably still paid by Makarov, so that would have raised interest of course

    This reeks of his agent trying to drum up interest and start a bidding war. 250k is cheap though even with the baggage.
