Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista Del Sol

here we go again

Titel holder #lotto Tim Wellens returns to Andalucia. Will he be as suprised as I am that there is no mountain top finish this year?! ;)

Stage 1:

Stage 2:

Stage 3 (ITT):

Stage 4:

Stage 5:

Also the competition seems to be a bit weaker than usually, with a constantly decreasing amount of WT teams in the race (down to 6 from 10 in 2016):

#lotto    LOTTO SOUDAL
#movistar    MOVISTAR TEAM
#astana    ASTANA PRO TEAM
#jumbo    TEAM JUMBO-VISMA
#mitchelton    MITCHELSON-SCOTT
#bahrain    BAHRAIN MERIDA
#topsport    SPORT VLAANDEREN-BALOISE
#wanty    WANTY - GOBERT CYCLING TEAM
#gazprom    GAZPROM - RUSVELO
#roompot    ROOMPOT - CHARLES
#cajarural    CAJA RURAL-SEGUROS RGA
#vital    VITAL CONCEPT - B&B HOTELS
#rally    RALLY CYCLING
#nippo    NIPPO - VINI FANTINI - FAIZANE
#androni    ANDRONI GIOCATTOLI - SIDERMEC
#bardiani    BARDIANI CSF
#murias    EUSKADI BASQUE COUNTRY - MURIAS
#burgos    BURGOS BH
#fundacion    TEAM EUSKADI

Overall, the start list looks alright though. #astana Astana is on fire currently, and there are also guys like #jumo Kruijswijk, the #mitchelton Yates brothers + Chaves, #bahrain Teuns, #wanty Martin and #fundacion Higuita to spice things up on the climbs.

Those are not as rolling as it looks like at first sight btw. The Alcala de la Gazules day 1 finish is 1k at 11%:

The time trial includes two climbs, 4.5k at 3.5% + 1.8k at 7.6%:

and day #4 should be a proper queen stage. Alto he Hazallanas is tough enough for a selection, even with still over 20k to go to the finish:

All stages are live on Eurosport (2)

When I opened the thread, I did not notice that Wellens had missed Besseges due to illness, reported that he didn't train for a week and so on... but by the look of it, in the end it didn't make a difference anyway. Not today at least:

As a bit more of a surprise, Adam Yates (18th), Luis Leon Sanchez (26th) and Dylan Teuns (29th - although after having been sick as well) finished pretty far down the order.

Earlier today I read that #jumbo Steven Kruijswijk had trained like a mad man during winter, doing double the amount of climbing than last year. As this is was not really a climb suited to him today, it looks like the work seems to be paying off.

Hopefully he also used all those climbs to train some descending though :P

today's finish seems to be new to the race, and it's a bit of a strange one, with basically a 20k uphill drag in the end, averaging at 1.7%

According the la-flamme-rouge profile, the final 5k are a bit "steeper" with 2.5% average.

This will probably not be enough to drop any of the sprinters (especially as most of those in the race are good climbers anyway - apart from #vital Manzin), but we should see some tired legs, and maybe there springs up the opportunity for someone to take the stage with a late attack

#vital Vital Concept had all 12 bikes stolen tonight. They managed to still start the stage with help from #murias Murias and #fundacion Fundacion Euskadi though, who both use the same bike supplier (Orbea)

    https://twitter.com/Orbea/status/1098536269364248577

No idea what's the situation in terms of the time trial bikes for tomorrow, but with no real GC or stage contender, doing it on the road bikes would probably not be a problem

we should see some tired legs, and maybe there springs up the opportunity for someone to take the stage with a late attack

#mitchelton kept it together for Trentin, who delivered in the end.

#bahrain Ivan Cortina had launched his sprint very early though (almost countable as an "attack"? ;)), and actually wasn't too far away from taking the stage.

Over to the time trial today (profile via @raffilpt)

Looks pretty much tailor made for #astana Ion Izagirre. #yellow Tim Wellens said, that since Kevin de Weert got on board, #lotto Lotto massively increased the work on time trialing though.

also #androni Androni had no time trial bikes, by the look of it. And in the end it was Wellens who won again.

#bahrain Mohoric smashed the 2nd part. Would be interesting to know how much of an advantage he had at the end of that descent...

With three Astana riders still within half a minute to Wellens, that should be an entertaining stage tomorrow :cool

Astana and Mitchelton started their attacks on the penultimate climb today, and it turned out to be too hard for Wellens to defend the lead indeed:

With a 1-2-4 in GC now #astana Astana should have the race in the bag, although there's another opportunity to attack tomorrow:

That climb comes with ~30k to go though, and #jumbo Kruijswijk is basically the only dangerman left in GC. So some kind of sprint is probably the more likely outcome.

The official website has the final k at around ~5%...

while it's more like 3% on la-flamme-rouge. The truth may be somewhere in the middle.
