My riders only collect points for finishing races, that's pretty disappointing especially for big name sprinters in a pan flat race.

Durbridge was not an expensive pick for his 13 teams, but they would have been confident in him getting more than the 22 points he accumulated prior to this collarbone injury.

My hopes have issues now. Was hoping Durbo would have a solid season.

    Stybar doing nicely though

Yes, both started the season well. What's Vanmarckes problem? He was always solid.

Wow last year winner was 1500 ish I think

It is not quite that scary a score he is racking up: final top 5 in 2018 was
    1   Madrazo   2314
    2   The_Asian   2308
    3   Hakkie   2307
    4   Armchair   2277
    5   Nathanptz   2274

After E3 last year (11th race then, as now)
    1   Laarsland   1048
    2   Russell23   1037
    3   Armchair   1030
    4   Nathanptz   980
    5   Hakkie   976

so Toby is way clear of that schedule, and while Chiron's score would have been top of this 12 months ago, Semir (now 3rd) would only have been 15th.

If he carries on at this rate, Toby will have the 4 seasons title sown up before the spring game is done.

    Race 12/21: Gent-Wevelgem

Managers need a good reason to spend 750 points + on a rider in this game, and no one thought that Kristoff, Degenkolb or Van Poppel provided sufficient reason.  If they don't follow up their results today with something else good, that might have been a fair judgement (although  I dare say there will be more expensive riders that were picked scoring less by the end of the game)  We certainly got some of the good scorers into our teams though.

NAESEN Oliver   3rd, 112pts for SemirS
VAN DER POEL Mathieu   4th, 96 pts for 13 teams
    PETIT Adrien   6th, 76 pts for Otoxiep87
    TRENTIN Matteo   7th, 66 for 15 teams
    DEBUSSCHERE Jens   10th, 46 for 3

Between us, we also selected 11 more of the top 30, plus 16 lower, 5 point, finishers.

And look who is lurking in 3rd on the day, with no less than 9 of his riders adding to his ridiculously high total...

    1   Joelsim   226 (Van der Poel, Trentin, Kung (21pts) Rowe (18), Gaviria (15) and 2 5s; 80 Green points)
2   SemirS   225 (Naesen, Van der Poel, Langeveld (10), Van Aert (7); 50 GPts)
3   Tobydawq   217 (Van der Poel, Trentin, Rowe, Langeveld, Van Aert, 4 fivers; 35 GPts)
    4   ThePirate81   199 (Van der Poel, Trentin, Rowe, Gilbert, 1 fiver; 25)
    5   Chiron   179 (15)
    6   Search   163 (10)
    7   Otoxiep87   152 (5)
    8   PremierAndrew   151 (3)
    9   Madrazo   146 (2)
    10   Salvarani   145 (1)
    11   AmisVelo, Del1962   136
    13   Kazistuta   135
    14   Bminchow   134
    15   Flo   131
    16   Blues_in_the_Bottle   129
    17   Armchair   124
    18   Triley36   123
    19   RoteLaterne   114
    20   LosBrolin   108
    21   Nathanptz   95
    22   Comodoro, Safebet   94
    24   Vladimir   92
    25   Laarsland   74

    34   MellowVelo   30
    35   GPBlanco   22
       SoLastYear   13
       CollectiveWisdom   106

    Green Points

Toby extends his lead, Chiron moves up to second, SemirS jumps 4, and Joelsim comes from just outside the top 10 to 4th.

    1   Tobydawq   277.38
    2   Chiron   180.95
    3   JustSomeGuy   175.13
    4   Joelsim   154.49
    5   SemirS   148.42
    6   Otoxiep87   146.63
    7   Laarsland   141
    8   LightBing   120.04
    9   Bminchow   114.5
    10   Scrool07   105.04

    Standings

Toby's lead gets still bigger, in an unchanged podium. Joelsim in 4th is up 2 places, and The Pirate joins the top ten on the strength of a 6 place jump (matched by Search in a more modest position in the table)  Blues in the Bottle reappears in the top ten.

    1   Tobydawq   1672

Someone should have told me this was missing: I composed it here, and copied it onto CN, on Wednesday evening, but somehow forgot to press 'post' here.

    Race 13/21: Dwars door Vlaanderen

VAN DER POEL Mathieu   1st, 180pts   13 teams
PÖSTLBERGER Lukas   4th, 78pts for Kazistuta and Vladimir
BENOOT Tiesj   5th, 70 for LightBing and Scrool07
    ROWE Luke   6th, 62 for 25 teams
    LAMPAERT Yves   8th, 46 for 3 teams
    HAUSSLER Heinrich   10th, 36 for 8 teams

and we also had between us 8 more of the top 25 and 31 five pointers

Probably largely due to the popularity of the winner, this race has been beaten in terms of points yielded only by the E3 Harelbeke (though should be passed on Sunday)

1   Madrazo   304 (Van der Poel, Rowe, Haussler, Roelandts and 3 fivers; 80 points for green jersey)
2   Search   302 (Van der Poel, Rowe, Keukeleire (30), Pollitt (10) and 4 fivers; 50 pts)
3   Armchair   293 (Van der Poel, Rowe, Haussler and 3 fivers; 35)
    4   Joelsim   271 (25)
    5   Tobydawq   267 (15)
    6   PremierAndrew   266 (10)
    7   AmisVelo, Del1962, ThePirate81   257 (3.33 each)
    10   Triley36   206 (1)
    11   Chiron   205
    12   Blues_in_the_Bottle   200
    13   SemirS   197
    14   Kazistuta, Laarsland   169
    16   Scrool07   152
    17   Leadbelly   148
    18   Vladimir   144
    19   Salvarani   134
    20   Flo   130
    21   RoteLaterne   129
    22   Comodoro   113
    23   JustSomeGuy   103
    24   Otoxiep87   100
    25   NorthAmericanScum   98
    26   BlackBandit222, Josedin   92
    28   LightBing   85
    29   Safebet   83
    30   Postmanhat   82
    31   MellowVelo   78
    32   LosBrolin   72
    33   Nathanptz   43
    34   GPBlanco   36
    35   Bminchow   30
       SoLastYear   20
       CollectiveWisdom   88

    Green points

Madrazo gets into the top ten, and Joelsim moves up one place on what would be a very tight podium if it were not for Toby.

    1   Tobydawq   292.38
    2   Chiron   180.95
    3   Joelsim   179.49
    4   JustSomeGuy   175.13
    5   SemirS   148.42
    6   Otoxiep87   146.63
    7   Laarsland   141
    8   LightBing   120.04
    9   Madrazo   118.42
    10   Bminchow   114.5

    Standings

This is about as close as races last year in the Junior category: Chiron in 2nd is closer to 10th place than first, but is nevertheless well clear of third.
That third spot has a new occupant, Joelsim moving up one place, and although there are no new entries in the top ten, 4 other members of it move up a bit.  Search moved up 9 places, but Armchair pips him with an 11 place jump.

    1   Tobydawq   1939
    2   Chiron   1483
    3   Joelsim   1254
    4   SemirS   1244
    5   PremierAndrew   1223
    6   Madrazo   1205
    7   ThePirate81   1124
    8   AmisVelo   1112
    9   Del1962   1075
    10   Blues_in_the_Bottle   1030
    11   Triley36   981
    12   Search   964
    13   Bminchow   947
    14   Armchair   888
    15   JustSomeGuy   887
    16   Laarsland   879
    17   Kazistuta   876
    18   Scrool07   872
    19   Salvarani   871
    20   LightBing   870

    Race 14/21: Ronde van Vlaanderen

A popular winner, but the rest of the podium went unselected, for very different reasons.

    BETTIOL Alberto   1st, 280pts   17 teams
VAN DER POEL Mathieu   4th, 125   13 teams
POLITT Nils   5th, 112 for Search

VAN AVERMAET Greg   10th, 62 for BlackBandit
Plus 11 more of the top 30, and 31 five point finishers.

Toby didn't break the game record for one race, as he had hoped for, but still topped the table by a healthy margin...

    Race 15/21: Scheldeprijs

No joy in "his" race for the 7 teams who have chosen Kittel, but some teams have gained something.
BOECKMANS KRIS   6th, 48pts for Chiron
    PHILIPSEN Jasper   9th, 30 for 9 teams
    CAPIOT Amaury   15th, 11 for 8 teams
NAESEN Lawrence    16th, 10 for Tobydawq and Laarsland
MCLAY Daniel   17th, 9 for Joelsim
    PLANCKAERT Baptiste   18th, 8   4 teams
    and 2 five pointers

    1   Chiron   78 (Boeckmans & Philipsen) 80 Green Points
    2   Bminchow   41 (Philipsen and Capiot)  50
    3   Joelsim   39(Philipsen and McLay) 35
4   ThePirate81   35 (Philipsen and (Philipsen and Van Stayen) 25
    5   Otoxiep87, Blues_in_the_Bottle, Josedin, BlackBandit222, NorthAmericanScum   30  7 each
    10   Laarsland   21   1
    11   Search   16
12   LightBing, Armchair, Nathanptz, GPBlanco   11
    16   Tobydawq   10

    22   The rest   0
       SoLastYear   16
       CollectiveWisdom   0

    Green Points
Chiron narrows the gap, but it is still nearly 100 points.  In the lower part of the top ten, Otoxiep overtakes SemirS, but Bminchow overtakes both of those and 2 others.

    1   Tobydawq   372.38
    2   Chiron   275.95
    3   Joelsim   224.49
    4   JustSomeGuy   175.13
    5   Madrazo   168.42
    6   Bminchow   164.5
    7   Otoxiep87   153.63
    8   SemirS   148.42
    9   Laarsland   142
    10   LightBing   120.04

    Standings
Normally, is the team in secoond is top scorer, and the leader is way down the field, we would dwell on a narrowing of the gap.  This year is not normal.  Rather underwhelmingly, the highest placed riser, and joint biggest (2 place) jump of the day with BitB immediately behind him, is Otoxiep87 all the way down in 15th.

Good that at least my team finished the cobbled races as they began.

I have some guys racing: Boom, van Baarle and Trentin Amstel, Haussler de Brabantse Pijl. Unfortunately no Kittel in Frankfurt so he was a crap pick.

Haussler was also confirmed to to Frankfurt today. Some as Politt, who is my hope for the race (which I'd tend to say is too hard for Kittel now anyway).

Off to the Netherlands on Sunday.  Dropboxy McDropboxface

Even with 4 races to go, that score of Tobydawq's puts previous winners in the shade, and although Chiron might feel that his second place is distant, it already bears comparison with previous winners.  There has been some score inflation as more races have been upgraded to WT status, but these are impressive scores.

    Race 18/21: Amstel Gold

    Wow: that was extraordinary.
And I don't only mean Tobydawq's moving into a positive score.

VAN DER POEL Mathieu   1st, 220 points for 13 teams
    TRENTIN Matteo   10th, 40 for 15
    VAN AVERMAET Greg   14th, 27 for 1
    KREUZIGER Roman   18th, 18 for 2
also 2 more of the top 30, and 13 five pointers

1   ThePirate81   276 (Van der Poel, Trentin, Gilbert (6) and 2 fivers) 80 Green points
2   Chiron, Joelsim, Tobydawq   270 (Van der Poel, Trentin and 2 fivers) 36.67 green points each
5   Armchair   253 (Van der Poel, Kreuziger and 3 fivers) 15
6   AmisVelo   245 (Van der Poel and 5 fivers)  10
    7   Triley36   240     5
    8   Del1962, Madrazo, PremierAndrew   235   2 each
    11   SemirS   233

    23   LosBrolin   46
    24   Vladimir   45

    Green points

Today's top four (those combining van der Poel and Trentin) are now the top 4 in this,  Pirate having jumped up from 13th.  Those are the only 4 teams with a chance of winning, and other than moving down to accommodate Pirate's rise, there were no other changes in the top ten.

    1   Tobydawq   436.05
    2   Chiron   339.62
    3   Joelsim   288.16
    4   ThePirate81   206.32
    5   JustSomeGuy   175.13
    6   Madrazo   174.42
    7   Bminchow   164.5
    8   Leadbelly   161.54
    9   Laarsland   157
    10   Otoxiep87   153.63

    Standings

The Pirate81 moves up one place to the podium, and Armchair up 2 to get into the top ten, while Triley36, Blues in the Bottle and Del1962 share the biggest rise (4 places) honours for the second stage in a row (essentially by being the lowest placed MvdP teams).  Chiron is now the second highest scorer in the seven years of the game, and Tobydawq acheives a positive score, which no-one has come remotely near to before.

    Race 19/21: Fleche Wallonne

The best Ardennes riders tend to be very expensive for their returns within this game.  Having said that, Bjorn Lambrecht would have been a lot cheaper and yielded a lot more points than many of those that were selected by the managers here with these races in mind.

VANENDERT Jelle   9th, 52 pts for Comodoro and Scrool07
GASPAROTTO Enrico   10th, 46 for Mellow Velo and Otoxiep87
COSNEFROY Benoit   12th, 35 for Safebet
WELLENS Tim   17th, 19 for Just Some Guy
    and 8 five pointers

Comodoro has been at the bottom of the table for some time, so good that he gets a moment in the sunlight.
    1   Comodoro   62 (80 Green points)
    2   Scrool07   52 (50)
    3   MellowVelo   51 (35)
    4   Otoxiep87   46 (25)
    5   Safebet   45 (15)
    6   JustSomeGuy   24 (10)
    7   AmisVelo   15 (5)
    8   Armchair, BlackBandit222, Bminchow, Del1962, Josedin, LightBing   10 (1 each)
14   Chiron, Flo, GPBlanco, Joelsim, Leadbelly, LosBrolin, Nathanptz, PremierAndrew, RoteLaterne, Salvarani, ThePirate81, Tobydawq, Triley36, Vladimir   5
    28   The rest   0
       SoLastYear   0
       CollectiveWisdom   10

    Green Points

Otoxiep is up  from 10th to 6th, and Scrool breaks into the top ten.

    1   Tobydawq   436.05
    2   Chiron   339.62
    3   Joelsim   288.16
    4   ThePirate81   206.32
    5   JustSomeGuy   185.13
    6   Otoxiep87   178.63
    7   Madrazo   174.42
    8   Bminchow   165.5
    9   Leadbelly   161.54
    10   Scrool07   157.04

    Standings

Something of a stalemate, with no-one in the top 7 scoring more than 5 points.  Del1962 moving from 14th to 13th was the only change above the bottom 7 places: down there, Mellow Velo somehow finds a 2 place "leap".

    30   BlackBandit222   981
    31   MellowVelo   914
    32   GPBlanco   900

It is very possible that the Liege and Frankfurt races are not much more influential in the game.

Lambrecht showed nothing at the beginning of the season but he was probably peaking for the Ardennes that nobody of us knew. But having him in my emerging 2017 game and the main game I'm obviously happy about his latest performances.

    Race 20/21: Liege-Bastogne-Liege

This has been important for the game in the past, and there was some evidence of Ardennes friendly riders in some of the teams submitted, but none that have really featured when the racing got going.

GAUDU David   5th, 100 pts for Comodoro
WELLENS Tim   11th, 54 for Just Some Guy
BAKELANTS Jan   30th, 6 for LightBing, Premier Andrew and Vladimir
and just 8 of the 71 five pointers.

Comodoro, in the tradition of Kubler, Argentin, Rebellin, Valverde and Gilbert, does the Belgian Ardennes double..

    1   Comodoro   100   80 Green points
    2   JustSomeGuy   59   50 pts
    3   LightBing   11    35 pts

Early challenger JSG moves up one  to 4th, and Armchair Cyclist appears at the foot of the top ten.  Comodoro had 1/26th of a point last Sunday, and is only just outside the top ten now.

Race 21/21: Eschborn-Frankfurt  and the final stage of the game.

A few of our chosen riders still finding some points:

Congratulations to Tobydawq, who really has set a new standard for the game with a phenomenal score, to Chiron for what would, under other circumstances, have been a dominant and record breaking win, and to everyone who can claim to have had some sort of a victory, if only over their own expectations.
Thanks to all who have taken part, and/or followed the updates.

I should manage some number crunching later this evening.

564 different riders scored in at least one of these 21 races (although 26 of those among our selectionsfailed to do so).  The 18 highest scorers got more than 300:

VAN DER POEL Mathieu   901pts   13 teams
    ALAPHILIPPE Julian   892   0
    FUGLSANG Jakob   632   0
    STYBAR Zdenek   573   3
    NAESEN Oliver   546   1
    KRISTOFF Alexander   542   0
    BETTIOL Alberto   444   17
    VAN AVERMAET Greg   443   1
    ACKERMANN Pascal   428   0
    VAN AERT Wout   418   15
    POLITT Nils   400   1
    GILBERT Philippe   396   3
    LAMPAERT Yves   387   3
    SCHACHMANN Maximilian   376   0
    JUNGELS Bob   373   0
    MATTHEWS Michael   319   0
    SAGAN Peter   315   0
    TRENTIN Matteo   301   15

28 of them yielded a profit (they got more points in these few weeks than in the whole of last year), although only a small number did so by more than a handful of points:

BETTIOL Alberto   394 points profit   17 teams
VAN DER POEL Mathieu   362   13
    HALLER Marco   119   0
    NAESEN Lawrence   105   2
DE GREEF Robbert (RIP)   57   0
    LANGEVELD Sebastian   43   6
    ROWE Luke   35   25
    BOECKMANS KRIS   35   1
    CLARKE Simon   29   0
    SHALUNOV Evgeny   29   0

    VAKOC Petr   20   15
    VERGAERDE Otto   19   0

    DE VREESE Laurens   17   1
    SCHWARZMANN Michael   16   0
    GABBURO Davide   13   0
    CIMOLAI Davide   10   0

    EISEL Bernhard   10   2
    GAREL Adrien   10   0
    MATHIS Marco   6   0
    CARVALHO Andre Rodrigues   6   0
    BAGIOLI Andrea   5   0
    VERWILST Aaron   5   0
    SIX Franklin   5   0
    TIMMERMANS Justin   5   0
    LEROUX Samuel   5   0
    DE VRIES Hartthijs   5   0
    SCHELLING Ide   2   0

    PETIT Adrien   1   1

4 of these return an infinite percentage return, as their cost was 0 (Vakoc, Garel, Leroux, De Vries), but for the remainder of those in profit, their percentage return is:
    VERGAERDE Otto   2000.0
    BETTIOL Alberto   888.0
    DE GREEF Robbert   311.1
    NAESEN Lawrence   305.9
    HALLER Marco   295.1
    SHALUNOV Evgeny   261.1
    CARVALHO Andre Rodrigues   220.0
    EISEL Bernhard   200.0
    VERWILST Aaron   200.0
    SIX Franklin   200.0
    TIMMERMANS Justin   200.0
    BOECKMANS KRIS   183.3
    VAN DER POEL Mathieu   167.2
    MATHIS Marco   154.5
    ROWE Luke   150.0
    DE VREESE Laurens   139.5
    LANGEVELD Sebastian   132.3
    GABBURO Davide   125.5
    SCHWARZMANN Michael   121.3
    CLARKE Simon   112.0
    CIMOLAI Davide   111.4
    SCHELLING Ide   110.0
    BAGIOLI Andrea   107.5
    PETIT Adrien   100.6

The Impeccable Picks (you could not get more points from a cheaper rider) are:
    VAN DER POEL Mathieu
    BETTIOL Alberto
    DE GREEF Robbert
    SHALUNOV Evgeny
    VAKOC Petr

The best possible team that I find on a brief shuffling of numbers is:

FUGLSANG Jakob   1045 cost   632 points earned
    STYBAR Zdenek   724   573
VAN DER POEL Mathieu   539   901
    CLARKE Simon   242   271
    LANGEVELD Sebastian   133   176
    ROWE Luke   70   105
    HALLER Marco   61   180
    NAESEN Lawrence   51   156
    BETTIOL Alberto   50   444
    BOECKMANS KRIS   42   77
    DE GREEF Robbert   27   84
    VAKOC Petr   0   20
for a total of 3619, but my first attempt at calculating this is nearly always surpassed when others turn their attention to it: please let me know if you find better.

Embarrassing errors could be defined in a number of ways: these are those who cost at least the average budget per rider, and were selected (with the number of teams that selected him) but scored less than 10% of their cost.
    BOASSON HAGEN Edvald   1
    DUNBAR Eddie   1
    FELLINE Fabio   6
    HAIG Jack   1
    KITTEL Marcel   7
    KREUZIGER Roman   2
    MOSCON Gianni   1
    VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael   1
    VAN DER HOORN Taco   3
VAN SCHIP Jan-Willem   1         (I had three of them!)

    Tobydawq's winning team: (name/cost/score)
    STYBAR Zdenek   724   573
    VAN AERT Wout   597   418
    TRENTIN Matteo   581   301
VAN DER POEL Mathieu   539   901
    LANGEVELD Sebastian   133   176
    VANDENBERGH Stijn   105   62
    STANNARD Ian   103   35
    ROWE Luke   70   105
    NAESEN Lawrence   51   156
    BETTIOL Alberto   50   444
    BOOM Lars   37   20
    VAKOC Petr   0   20

       2990   3211

The 13 teams who chose Van Der Poel are all in the top 14 places: Leadbelly in 11th is the only impostor in that group of Mathieuphiles.  Selecting Bettiol kept his teams out of the bottom third at least, and SemirS in 7th was the highest placed without him.

Some races, inevitably, contributed more to the game than others:

Ronde van Vlaanderen   9370 points granted to teams   16.8% of the total scored
    E3   6724   12.1
    Paris-Roubaix   6245   11.2
    Dwars    5564   10.0
    Gent-Wevelegem   3959   7.1
    Amstel   3934   7.1
    Omloop   3571   6.4
    Milan-San Remo   3566   6.4
    Brabantse Pijl    2889   5.2
    Strade Bianche   2643   4.7
    Denain   1838   3.3
    De Panne   1295   2.3
    KBK   866   1.6
    Nokere   846   1.5
    Handzame   585   1.1
    Frankfurt   539   1.0
    Scheldeprijs   471   0.8
    Fleche   425   0.8
    LBL   297   0.5
    Drenthe   52   0.1
    GP Industria   0   0.0

Here is the spreadsheet: please do share any other interesting findings.

And keep an eye out for the Giro game: I hope to do an initial launch posting tomorrow, but entries should really be held back until prices for that one are set on Monday.

Cheers Armchair for your work as always.

Let's hope that Toby forgets to enter one of the GTs and then we might stand a chance of catching him up in the combined end of year league. Maybe.
