[WT] Tour of Turkey

55th Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey

Tuesday, April 16th to Sunday, April 21st

Tour of Turkey again?! Yep, now moved back to it's original (?) date in April, only 6 months after edition #54, it's time for the next one already, taking place solely in the nortwest of the country.

The race follows a usual pattern of a handful of (partly uphill) sprint finishes and one mountain towards the end of the week.

16/4: Stage 1 - Istanbul › Tekirdağ (165k)

17/4: Stage 2 - Tekirdağ › Eceabat (180k)

18/4: Stage 3 - Çanakkale › Edremit (155k)

19/4: Stage 4 - Balıkesir › Bursa (185k)

20/4: Stage 5 - Bursa › Kartepe (170k)

21/4: Stage 6 - Sakarya › Istanbul (165k)

The mountaintop finish is a new one, and fairly tough (as seen on the left). Although it could have been even worse, if they had used the other road up there (profile on the right)

For the 2nd year in the row, the Tour of Turkey failed to attract the minumum number of 10 WT teams, which means the race will lose WT status, if the UCI decides to follow their own rules.

Also #movistar Movistar, the (new) team of last year's winner Edu Prades is not around. As this obviously left some room for others though, #w52 W52 managed to secure their first WT invitation as a PCT team:
  • #astana Astana Pro Team
  • #bora BORA - hansgrohe
  • #lotto Lotto Soudal
  • #deceuninck Deceuninck - Quick Step
  • #dimension Team Dimension Data
  • #uae UAE-Team Emirates
  • #burgos Burgos-BH
  • #cajarural Caja Rural - Seguros RGA
  • #delko Delko Marseille Provence
  • #murias Euskadi Basque Country - Murias
  • #manzana Manzana Postobon
  • #neri Neri Sottoli - Selle Italia - KT
  • #nippo Nippo Vini Fantini Faizanè
  • #rally Rally UHC Cycling
  • #vlaanderen Sport Vlaanderen - Baloise
  • #w52 W52 / FC Porto
  • #teamtr Turkey
As usual, there are almost no climbers in the race, so #w52 W52 may even have a chance to win this Raul Alarcon. Other potential contenders are #astana Merhawi Kudus, #bora Felix Großschartner, #dimension Ben O'Connor, #uae Jan Polanc, #teamtr Mustafa Sayar, or probably some of the guys I barely ever heard of.

The race is live on Eurosport around noon for the weekdays, and on from 14:00 cest at the weekend.

I noticed that MTF a while back. It's a proper test for sure.
A pity so many the WT teams a reluctant to use the race as a bit of Giro prep, as it seems to have almost perfect ingredients.

W52 are pretty much sending the who's who of their Volta, team.
Could be fun and games if they turn up with anything like their August form and Mustafa Sayar decides it's time to reestablish his............er..............form. :D

Sayar was in the grupetto in Rhodes earlier this spring. That’s not a season starter race for WT level cycling. (Based on first hand report from a Norwegian club rider.)

yeah, that wasn't meant to be taken too seriously.

Today's stage ended in the kinda expected sprint finish, with #bora Sam Bennett taking the win.

This means he has extended his stretch of "consecutive stage races with a victory" to five now. Last race where he didn't take one, was Catalunya in March 2018.

Tomorrow's finish could be more of a challenge for the pure sprinters though, with the final 400m averaging at ~6%...

...but with no real specialists for uphill sprints (apart from Ewan maybe) we could still see more or less the same guys fighting it out.

Before the start of the stage #deceuninck Morkov said that they may swap their sprinting option from day to day though, so it'll be interesting to see who Quickstep will go for tomorrow.

in the end, it turned out to be not too hard for Bennett...

The next two sprints were won by #quickstep Jakobsen and #lotto Ewan then (who had crashed in the first uphill sprint on day 2)

Today it's time for the big MTF. There was some snow yesterday, but apparently the situation has improved, and there's no risk of the stage getting cancelled:

in the end they scrapped the final 4k due to the weather. As that was the flat part anyway, it didn't make the climb any less selective though:

The most exciting part of the race came during the final km of stage 6 though:

...although the gc remained unchanged of course:
