Stage 11

Slightly more impact than yesterday: Ewan got a better result, the withdrawal of Moschetti means there is some GC point change, and slightly more movement in the points classification.  But not a lot.

EWAN Caleb   70 points   20 teams
CIMOLAI Davide   13   4
CONSONNI Simone   7   1
GIBBONS Ryan   5   3
NIZZOLO Giacomo   4   6
MARECZKO Jakub   2   2
...
CICCONE Giulio   -1   3
ROGLIC Primoz   -5   11
MOSCHETTI Matteo   -16   5

1   Flo, Scrool07   83 (55 Purplish points)
3   Triley36   76 (25)
4   Will10   75 (15)

Purplish points

Otoxiep87 has been at least joint leader of this since stage 2: Scrool07 now overtakes him. Flo shares not only the daily win for a second time, but also the podium and a one place rise. Triley appears in the top ten on a four place rise

1   Scrool07   211
2   Otoxiep87   195.65
3   Flo   186
4   TotalPackage   135.4

Standings

What is probably Ewan's last contribution to their scores (unless you count a 40 point deduction likely tomorrow) gives both Mellow Vellow and BikeRacer a 3 place jump to the podium positions.  Premier Andrew and Tigerion are joint biggest jumpers, both moving 4 places.

    Purplish points

Torcia dropped out of the top ten yesterday: back in it with a big jump today (but not as big as Josedin's 11 places mid-table).  The top three are unchanged.

    1   Scrool07   218
    2   Otoxiep87   195.65

    10   Triley36   83.47

    Standings

The drop away of the stage 6 breakaway men topples Shalgo from top spot.  Although their main characteristic to distinguish thenm from the other Roglic teams was a DNF this morning, BikeRacer and Mellow Velo have been left enough credit by Ewan to fill the top two slots, with Los Brolin, courtesy of unique pick Montaguti, taking third.  Del1962 enters the top ten, infiltrating the stronghold of Roglic teams, largely through rare pick Majka, while daily winner Torcia is the rocket of the day, up 13 places.

Stage 13 and the first MTF

Lots of points for popular riders (but not the most popular one), as the pack closes on Roglic and the other teams close on the Roglicianados

    ZAKARIN Ilnur   313pts   19 teams

Huge scores: all but one of the Zakarin teams also have Landa, so that's 441 points before they look at the rest of their riders.

A totally different game.   Teams with Roglic and Nibali have filled the top ten most days: now the only Roglic team in the top 9 is Squire, the only one without Nibali.

That huge daily winning score brings Fauniera from 17th to first, Del in second is the only one from yesterday's top ten to move up (8 places), and Torcia, now 3rd, was 23rd this morning (and 36th yesterday morning).  But 20 places is not enough to secure best jump of the day plaudits again: Salvarani is up 23 spots.

All but one of Fauniera's team has (for now, at least) more than 100 points.  What are the odds on Miguel Florez winning the stage tomorrow and getting enough KoM points to make the top 4 in that ranking, to complete his set?

Even if that doesn't happen, I suspect big changes are on the cards again for tomorrow.

    Purplish points

Torcia is back onto the podium.  Tobydawq and Archie appear in the top ten on the back of rises of 5 and 16 places respectively.

    1   Scrool07   258
    2   Otoxiep87   195.65

    9   Tobydawq   92

    Standings

Of the 5 Carapaz teams, Scrool07 was by far the highest placed yesterday: 3rd as against 24th, 26th, 28th and 37th.  But he had Zakarin, so moved up just one spot, as opposed to the average 25 places  (max 30 for Josedin) of the others.  So Archieboy takes the lead,  despite having been nearly 300 points adrift yesterday.

Had a couple good days but TGH dropping out will hurt my team. It was a toss up between him and Sivakov for my team :angry getting what I deserve for having faith in a Sky rider :shh

    Stage 15  Giro d'Italombaordia

An interesting enough stage, with potentially important time differences but few major positional changes, and only minor stage points for selected riders, so not many game points.

    YATES Simon   41pts   4 teams
    CARTHY Hugh   33   2
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio   28   5
    HIRT Jan   16   3

SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro   -19   2
    KANGERT Tanel   -38   7
    GALLOPIN Tony   -44   2

The Yates teams finally get an appearance in the daily table (1st, 2nd, 6th and, errrm, 24th (Gallopin losing 36 minutes will do that to you)).

    Purplish points

Scrool extends his lead: it is now more than a day's worth of points, and Torcia moves into 2nd.  Tobydawq moves up among the top ten, and the day's top two, Tigerion and Just Some Guy, move 19 and 20 places respectively, the latter getting his first purplish points.

    Standings

Much quieter in terms of change here, but the significant change is that Josedin has moved up two places, meaning that the five teams with Carapaz are now an unbroken group at the top of the table.   BikeRacer333 manages the Zubeldian feat of being the biggest riser (4 places) while getting a nett day score of 0 and an anonymous joint 15th in the daily scores.

I'm not sure what our plans are for the Bank Holiday tomorrow, but I'll probably do a bit of number crunching at some stage.

    Non finishers

When we pick a rider we probably at least hope that they will finish the race.  At least that way we get 15 points for them.  How many riders does each team have already enjoying more than one rest day?

    4: Carlo_Algatrensig, Kazistuta
    3: GodChild, Otoxiep87, Triley36
2:  BluesInTheBottle, ChrisDK, Comodoro, Flo, Googolplex, Laarsland, Mellow_Velo, Minessa, PremierAndrew, Scrool07, Tigerion, Tobydawq, TotalPackage, Will10, Yellow_Knight
1: AmisVelo, Armchair_Cyclist, BikeRacer33, Bminchow, Del1962, DJSprtsch, Fauniera, Josedin, JustSomeGuy, Karaev, Koronin, Leadbelly, LosBrolin, Salvarani, Search, Shalgo and Collective Wisdom
0:  ArchieBoy, BicycleBoy, LightBing, Nathanptz, Rote_Laterne, SafeBet, Squire, Torcia86, Vladimir

    The contenders
    Reminder of the top ten:
    1   ArchieBoy   1853
    2   Torcia86   1850
    3   Scrool07   1791
    4   Tobydawq   1716
    5   Josedin   1522
    6   Del1962   1506
    7   Fauniera   1482
    8   Rote_Laterne   1438
    9   LosBrolin   1423
    10   Shalgo   1419

The top five teams are the five who have Carapaz (and obviously share Nibali as a pick as well), and if the Ecuadorian stays in pink, the should remain the top five.
There are only 3 points between Archieboy and Torcia, and they have three other riders in common: Landa, O'Connor and Senni.   So it is essentially Masnada, Sivakov and Cimolai (for Archie) against Formolo, Zakarin and Ventoso for Torcia.
60 odd points does not look an enormous margin for Scrool07 to retrieve, but he also has both O'Connor and Landa, and with Ewan and Modolo out, and limited opportunities for Cimolai (who ArchieBoy has anyway), it would take a result from Narvaez that he has not indicated as likely yet to bring him any improvement.  The possibility of success through other riders dropping remains for him.
Tobydawq also has Landa (it is the lack of dorsal number 1 that leaves Josedin so far behind the other Carapazinos) but needs Kangert and De La Parte to start improving rapidly if he is to make up the deficit on the top three.

Even if Roglic were to climb back to the race lead, leaving Carapaz second, that of itself would not be enough to put the teams based on the Slovenian back at the top, especially if, as seems the most likely place for that to happen, that occurs on the final TT after 5 more days of 18 point bonuses.  And of course Nibali overtaking either or both of them would not have much nett effect on our scores.  There are higher  scoring permutations than those based on Roglic, as found by Del1962 (with Majka, Landa, Ewan and Zakarin) and Fauniera (Landa, Ewan, Zakarin, Ciccone and Sivakov).

But the last week will be horrible for at least one rider out there, and someone will do better than expected.  And the same should happen in the game.

    Standings

Masnada and Ventoso meant that the top two were both represented in the break, but only Masnada stayed in front of the GC riders, and so Archieboy extends his lead.  Vladimir's decent returns are more rewarded in this classification, with him getting a 10 place jump to 12th.  The only mover higher than that is Fauniera becoming the leading non-Carapazino challenger.

The top two got exactly the same score, albeit in different ways, so the margin is still 60 points.  Tobydawq closes most of the gap to Scrool, so 4th place getting closer to third echoes what happened in the race.  SafeBet and Laarsland are the Formolos of the day, moving into the top ten, but while SafeBet was only just outside the ten, Laarsland has made a 7 place jump to get there.

A sprint stage, presumably, tomorrow, so little change expected (Demare and Ackermann are not selected).  But Cimolai, one of few real sprinters still in the race, has form in these games: in the 2017 Tour de France game his 7th place on the Champs Elysees brought about a change in the winner of the game: he is on two of the top 4 teams.

Stage 18  Not quite a sprint stage

Very little doing here, with the break survivor and the main sprinters unpicked, and no change above 22nd in GC, and none in the mountains.  There are some stage points, and some losses in the points category to record.

Always nice when a unique pick pays off...

    Stage 20  Almost done.

Landa's (temporary?) move from 3rd to 4th makes more difference than his being pipped to the stage win.

    LANDA MEANA Mikel   92   32
BILBAO LOPEZ DE ARMENTIA Pello   87   1
    CICCONE Giulio   31   3
    ZAKARIN Ilnur   23   19
    CARTHY Hugh   16   2
    DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd   16   1

    KANGERT Tanel   15   7
    NIBALI Vincenzo   12   43

DE LA PARTE GONZALEZ Victor   -14   2
    FORMOLO Davide   -39   6
    ROGLIC Primoz   -51   11

Like Bilbao, and because of Bilbao, Koronin gets her second daily win.

1   Koronin   207 (Landa, Bilbao, Dombrowski and Nibali) (70 purplish points)
2   Fauniera   173 (Landa, Ciccone, Zakarin, Kangert, Nibali) (40)
3   Salvarani   154 (Landa, Zakarin, Kangert, Nibali) (40)
    4   Flo, PremierAndrew   139 (12.5 each)
    6   Will10   135 (7)
    7   AmisVelo, Comodoro   131 (4 each)

    Purplish points

Flo moves up to the podium, and Fauniera also takes a step forward, and Koronin jumps 12 places to enter the top ten.
Only one team can possibly catch Scrool, but I can't see any likely outcome tomorrow that will make Torcia the top scorer.

    1   Scrool07   281
    2   Torcia86   213.25
    3   Flo   204.5
    4   Fauniera   202.85
    5   Otoxiep87   196.9
    6   Koronin   148

    8   TotalPackage   135.4
    9   Tobydawq   134.5
    10   DJSprtsch   133.57

    Standings

Zakarin's gains might have brought Torcia close to leader Archie if they were not more than cancelled out by Formolo's losses: Formolo is also the main reason that Tobydawq has dropped away from Scrool's score in the battle for the podium.

Fauniera moves into the top five, and Googolplex into the ten, while Flo and Salvarani have 9 place jumps further down the table.

Almost all done: I suspect that much of today's change will be reversed tomorrow if, as expected, Roglic reclaims his podium position.

Stage 21  All done, with a rather uneventful ITT

As expected, Roglic and Landa swap places.  In the absence of Haga from all our teams, that is the main effect of the stage.  There is never a Pink Jersey bonus on the last stage.

No change on the podium, who all scored identically today, while Josedin's omission of Landa gets him back to 5th, meaning the 5 Carapaz teams fill the final top five places.  SafeBet gets back into the top ten, which now has exactly the same order as it had after stage 19, before Landa's brief stand on the virtual podium.  Mellow Velo and Bike Racer33, who have 5 riders in common and have moved in almost perfect step with each other throughout the race, share the final jump of the day mention with a 6 place move.

Congratulations to ArchieBoy for his win(as with the Spring Classics game, the winner is a newcomer to these games), to Torcia and Scrool for filling the podium, and to Tobydawq and Josedin for also identifying Carapaz as the way to go.  So, were you really tipping him to win, or just thinking he was one of the cheaper picks who had a decent top 5 or so chance?

Thanks to all who had a go, to the riders we invested our points in, to CQ for the scores and PCS whose result service I used.

I'll work out some rider numbers tomorrow.

    Best possible team
Somebody usually finds a higher scoring combination than I do, but the best I can see is:
    CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio
    NIBALI Vincenzo
    LANDA MEANA Mikel
    CICCONE Giulio
    CONTI Valerio
    CIMA Damiano

How The Game Was Won (Sorry Cosmo)

    ArchieBoy's winning selection:
    CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio   838
    NIBALI Vincenzo   480
    LANDA MEANA Mikel   348
    MASNADA Fausto   231
    SIVAKOV Pavel   157
    CIMOLAI Davide   61
    O'CONNOR Ben   40
    SENNI Manuel   18

Torcia had five riders in common with Archie, so the win essentially boiled down to the difference between
    MASNADA Fausto   231
    SIVAKOV Pavel   157
    CIMOLAI Davide   61
    and
    ZAKARIN Ilnur   212
    FORMOLO Davide   147
    VENTOSO ALBERDI Francisco Jose   15

Without wishing to put people off the Tour and Vuelta games, Tobydawq's near-podium here after his dominant performance in the Spring Classics game means that he is 1400 points clear in the 4 seasons challenge.

All these numbers, and more, are in the spreadsheet.

Tour starts on 6th July, scores will be based on up to 30 June, as in the download released on 1st July: I'll probably put up an initial post around about 28th June.

Just the three end of May updates to do for the Emerging Riders games this week, and I can look forward to more than a few CQ-free days for the first time since before the Omloop.

Thanks for the game and congratulations to ArchieBoy. Risky pick Carapaz as Landa was supposed to be the leader was worth it.
