Rest Day #1 + Stage 10: Ravenna › Modena
« on: May 20, 2019, 10:47 »
Stage 10: Ravenna › Modena

May 21st

For day 10 of this year's Giro, the race returns to where it started, the Emilia Romagna region in the Northeast of Italy. The stage heads off from the beautiful city of Ravenna, best known for its ancient churches, combining byzantine architecture and mosaic art...

...to Modena. Best known for vinegar and sports cars.

No matter if you are into churches or more into sports cars, both cities probably have more on offer than this stage of the race: ;)

Also the weather looks alright, mild temperatures, low wind speeds, maybe just a bit of rain, the the finish is fairly non-technical:

Also the pave stretch looks like non-complicated street cobbles. So it should be a fairly straight forward sprint stage.

    Rest Day #1 Roundup:

Taking into account that we have basically seen to real mountains so far, the gaps look pretty massive already...

#jumbo Roglic is one key mountain domestique down already. So this should lead to an entertaining race to watch hopefully. :)

    #ciclamino Classifica a punti

    Corridore Punti
    1      #bora   ACKERMANN Pascal      150
    2      #groupama   DEMARE Arnaud      98
    3      #lotto   EWAN Caleb      91
    4      #movistar   CARAPAZ Richard      50

    6      #movistar   ROJAS Jose'      32
    7      #trek   MOSCHETTI Matteo      32

    9      #gironippo   CIMA Damiano      28
    10      #astana   BILBAO LOPEZ Pello      27

Ackermann looks really strong so far, if he can extend his gap another bit over the next two days (which looks likely) only the time cut can stop him from winning the jersey. But it's his first Grand Tour, so although he said that he always planed to stay till the end, it's gonna be a bit ask to really do so...

Ewan will probably abandon on Wednesday, so if Ackermann can't hang on, it would probably fall back to Demare or a GC contender.

    Corridore Punti
    1      #trek   CICCONE Giulio      32
    2      #jumbo   ROGLIC Primoz      22
    3      #androni   MASNADA Fausto      18
    4      #movistar   PEDRERO Antonio      18
    5      #androni   FRAPPORTI Marco      15
    6      #uae   CONTI Valerio      8
    7      #trek   MOLLEMA Bauke      8
    8      #astana   ZEITS Andrey      8
    9      #ag2r   BIDARD Francois      7
    10      #bardiani   CARBONI Giovanni      6

Ciccone has gone for the jersey on from day one, and as Masnada is probably a bit too close to get any more freedom for the moment, it's not looking too bad for him to extend his lead on the first mountain stages at the end of the week.

I doubt people would have thought that would be the GC right now after one week but it is interesting.

Given he already has a stage win does Masnada who at the start of the race probably wouldn't have thought he'd be this close on GC and so free to possibly go Stage and KOM hunting in the mountains now ride for a high position on GC.

Pello Bilbao rode a very consistent race from what I remember of last year and so probably has the best chance of the Astana riders if he does the same again.

I think Yates is done. Perhaps the knee is worse than they are letting on after the crash and I'll be surprised if he's still in the race come the next rest day.

Based on what we've seen so far I'm going to predict a final GC of

    1 Roglic
    2 Nibali
    3 Mollema

Not very original but i struggle to see anyone toppling Roglic at the moment.

yeah, before the start of the Giro Savio said that a good GC (maybe Top ~15) + a stage win would be the target for Masnada , so I guess that they'll give it a try now and see where he can end up. For a while at least.

I keep thinking they are running the same strategy as they did in the Tour of the Alps: Cattaneo aiming for a good GC position and Masnada stage hunting, or possibly trying for the mountains jersey. Except, in order to do that, he's got to lose a load of time.
Maybe they will decide upon roles depending what happens in the first mountains, later in the week. Keeping both high in GC is going to be a stretch.

Like the fact that this is also tomorrow's stage thread, btw, as it's a ripper. :fp  :D

confirmed in Het Nieuwsblad today. Viviani as well.

a bit surprisingly, the result was a win for #groupama Arnaud Demare

As #bora Ackermann crashed pretty hard, Demare has now also closed the gap in the points classification down to 1 point. Other victims of the crash were #ccc Jakub Marezcko, #trek Matteo Moschetti, #ag2r Tony Gallopin and #bardiani Paolo Simeon. Most of them looked pretty banged up.

It  seems that after the rest day, they've decided to change the theme music to these.  Can't say I'm too happy about that.

    Stage 10 Highlights

Once again, though, not all that great of a clip. When so little actually happened on the stage, the least they could offer would be a couple of different angles of the sprint. I'm sure tomorrow's will be much better.
